Mets manager Terry Collins said Saturday that Johan Santana (shoulder) "may take six weeks to get where he wants to be."

Santana has not thrown off a mound in nearly three weeks and will need to double the distance of his current long-toss from 90 to 180 feet before he'll be cleared to climb atop the bump. Obviously, that means he's nowhere near ready to pitch in games. The Mets will use Jeremy Hefner as his rotation replacement.

J.J. Hardy (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie on Monday.

He'll play three games for the Baysox and then will likely be activated from the disabled list on Friday if all goes well. Hardy has been out all season with a left shoulder strain but has made progress recently after being given a cortisone injection.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) is expected to throw live batting practice at some point this week.

Ryu has been throwing off a mound for a week and is nearing the next step. A rehab assignment will be just around the corner after he faces hitters. Ryu is still weeks away from a return, but he's finally showing some real progress. The Dodgers could really use him after losing Brandon McCarthy (elbow).

Mat Latos (hamstring) has been cleared to start on Tuesday versus the Nationals.

Latos had to exit his last outing with a strained left hamstring, but he's apparently made a nice recovery over the last few days. The veteran right-hander is off to a disappointing start this season with a 6.86 ERA over his first five starts.
May 3 - 11:25 AM

Denard Span (abdomen) is back in the Nationals' lineup Sunday.

Span missed the previous two contests after being lifted from Thursday's game when he felt soreness in the area where he had core muscle surgery. It's doubtful that he's 100 percent, but it appears the outfielder will gut it out.
May 3 - 11:13 AM

Aramis Ramirez (hamstring) is back in the Brewers' lineup Sunday.

Ramirez missed a couple games with a sore hamstring, but he's ready to roll now. The third baseman has struggled overall this season but has been heating up of late, sporting a .375/.423/.708 batting line with a couple homers over his last eight games.
May 3 - 11:09 AM

Lorenzo Cain will begin serving a two-game suspension on Sunday after dropping his appeal.

It's a little surprising that he'd drop it now and miss a game versus the division-rival Tigers, but obviously the Royals determined it was best to get it out of the way now. Cain will return to action on Wednesday against the Indians. Jarrod Dyson is handling center field Sunday.
May 3 - 11:06 AM

Greg Holland (pectoral) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Holland got through a simulated game on Saturday with no issues. As long as he bounces back OK, he'll resume his closing duties on Tuesday, pushing Wade Davis back to a setup role. "I felt really good," Holland said. "It was exciting. I was able to execute most of my pitches. With that layoff, without really getting off the mound and facing hitters, it was very encouraging."
May 3 - 10:59 AM

Rays placed OF Desmond Jennings on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 26, with left knee bursitis.

The club had been hoping Jennings could return to action over the weekend, but he simply hasn't progressed as hoped. The backdated DL move means he'll be eligible to return on May 11, although it's not a given that he'll be ready at that time. Brandon Guyer will continue to see extra playing time while Jennings is out, and Joey Butler could also get a shot.
May 3 - 10:24 AM

Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that "one scenario" has Carlos Rodon joining the White Sox' rotation on May 10 versus the Reds.

Van Schouwen says that "there’s speculation" Jeff Samardzija and Chris Sale will drop the appeals of their five-game suspensions after their starts this week against the Tigers, which could open up a rotation spot next weekend for Rodon. Even if May 10 doesn't turn out to be the date of Rodon's first start, there's no doubting he's going to be entering the rotation soon. The lefty holds a 2.84 ERA over 6 1/3 relief innings, although it's come along with a 2.05 WHIP and 4/4 K/BB ratio. Still, the potential with Rodon is obviously sky-high, so feel free to stash him now if he's still on your waiver wire. Hector Noesi is expected to be booted from the rotation to make room for Rodon.
May 3 - 9:11 AM

Nick Franklin (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment on Monday.

The Rays haven't decided which affiliate he'll be assigned to yet, and it's also unclear how many rehab games Franklin is expected to require. The infielder figures to be tracking towards a mid-May return and is expected to take over at second base even though Logan Forsythe and Tim Beckham have been pretty productive.
May 3 - 8:48 AM

Josh Reddick hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning of Saturday's extra-innings loss to the Rangers.

Reddick was all over the place in this one and has been on an absolute tear as of late. His three-run homer off of Anthony Bass in the seventh inning put the cap on a six-run inning and helped the A's to a 7-3 lead, which the A's bullpen promptly threw away. Still. After the 3-for-5 night, Reddick's now working on a 10-game hitting streak and for the season, he's slashing .385/.444/.615. His oblique injury from spring training seems like a distant memory. Though with Reddick, the next injury is always potentially lurking around the corner.
