Padres released RHP Freddy Garcia.

The veteran right-hander was unable to make a real push for a roster spot, posting an 8.71 ERA in 20 2/3 innings this spring. Despite the poor showing in Cactus League action, Garcia shouldn't be out of a job long.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Red Sox have agreed to a one-year deal with Mitch Moreland.

Moreland figures to serve as Boston's regular first baseman in 2017 after winning Gold Glove honors there with Texas in 2016. Which means more DH time for Hanley Ramirez. Moreland, 31, tallied 22 homers and 60 RBI over 147 games for the Rangers this summer, though it came with an underwhelming .720 overall OPS. He had an .812 OPS in 2015.

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that the Rangers have spoken to the Reds about starters Anthony DeSclafani and Dan Straily.

Sullivan notes that the Reds "need relief" and that Rangers setup man Jeremy Jeffress is "of interest," but it doesn't sound like these discussions are very far along. DeSclafani posted a cool 3.28 ERA, 1.216 WHIP, and 105/30 K/BB ratio in 123 1/3 innings this past season for Cincinnati and he is under club control through 2020. He should command much more than bullpen help, but the Reds don't always operate in the wisest of ways.

MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports that the Yankees have made contract offers to both Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen.

It sure appears the Yanks are committed to getting one of the two top-flight closers, and they obviously have the cash to pull it off. Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported Tuesday afternoon that offers for Chapman are already past $80 million, and there's some thought that the number could climb past $100 million. Jansen will want something similar.

Rival executives tell Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports that the Mets are not making Curtis Granderson available.

Granderson was a massive part of the Mets' operation in 2016, slugging 30 homers with a .799 OPS over 633 plate appearances. He's owed a very reasonable $15 million in 2017, the final year of a four-year, $60 million deal. New York would much rather find a trade partner for Jay Bruce.
Dec 6 - 4:22 PM

White Sox acquired INF Yoan Moncada, RHPs Michael Kopech and Victor Diaz, and OF Luis Alexander Basabe from the Red Sox for LHP Chris Sale.

We knew it would take quite a haul for the White Sox to give up three years of one of the best pitchers in the game, and they managed to find it from Boston. Moncada, the centerpiece of the deal, is one of the top position prospects in all of baseball. He turns 22 in May and batted .294/.407/.511 with 15 homers and 45 stolen bases over 106 games last season between High-A and Double-A. Moncada struggled during his first exposure to the majors, but that wasn’t unexpected given his age and inexperience against advanced pitching. He should get a shot with the big club at some point in 2017, likely at second base. There’s still fantasy mega-stud potential here.

Red Sox officials have informed Jose Bautista's camp that "they are out on signing him," per Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

It's been a slow-moving market so far for Bautista, who posted a relatively underwhelming .234/.366/.452 batting line with 22 home runs and 69 RBI in 116 games this past season for Toronto. There are durability and defensive concerns as well, but he should eventually find a sizable contract from some team.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Orioles have "called on" free agent Chris Carter.

Milwaukee made a surprise decision to non-tender Carter last week and now he stands to find a decent market for himself after slugging 41 homers for the Brewers in 2016. The bat would obviously play well at Camden Yards, and all across the American League East.
Dec 6 - 4:09 PM

Red Sox acquired LHP Chris Sale from the White Sox for INF Yoan Moncada, RHP Michael Kopech, OF Luis Alexander Basabe, and RHP Victor Diaz.

It's a massive haul of prospects -- Moncada and Kopech being the centerpieces -- but the Red Sox get one of the top starting pitchers in baseball to line up next to David Price and 2016 American League Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello. Sale, 27, registered a 3.34 ERA, 1.037 WHIP, and 233/45 K/BB ratio over 226 2/3 innings for the White Sox in 2016 and carries a very team-friendly contract that can run through 2019 if all the options are exercised.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that he has received interest in Brett Gardner.

The Yankees are listening, but nothing sounds imminent. "He's here not because I can't move him; he's here because I'm not comfortable moving him, or haven't been satisfied in my asks that would make me move him," said Cashman. "You're going through the process, and you see if that changes. So far to this point, I've said no to a lot of different concepts thrown my way on it." Gardner is still under contract for two years at $26 million.
Dec 6 - 3:48 PM

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, offers for free agent closer Aroldis Chapman are past $80 million.

That's to be expected after Mark Melancon landed a four-year, $62 million deal (a new record deal for a reliever) from the Giants on Monday. Chapman is aiming for a six-year deal and is drawing interest from teams like the Yankees, Marlins, and Dodgers. There's even a chance that the Nationals could be in the mix. Kenley Jansen remains in the market and figures to land a big contract too, but Chapman is in a good spot right now.
Dec 6 - 3:39 PM

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Nationals are now going for Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen after missing out on Chris Sale.

The Nationals tried hard for Sale and were even willing to include Victor Robles and Lucas Giolito in a return package, but they drew the line on Trea Turner and the Red Sox ultimately topped them. McCutchen remains a strong fit for the Nationals, but it will be interesting to see if the club also considers alternative trade possibilities like Lorenzo Cain and Adam Eaton. It's worth noting that Robles was included in previous discussions related to McCutchen.
