Brett Lawrie (rib cage) will open the 2013 regular season on the 15-day disabled list.

Lawrie hasn't made a quick enough recovery from a rib cage injury and the Blue Jays don't want to risk trying to rush him back for the opener. The young third baseman should only miss the first week or so. He remains a highly valuable fantasy commodity at the hot corner. Maicer Izturis and Mark DeRosa will fill in.

Reds placed OF Marlon Byrd on the 15-day disabled list with a fracture in his right wrist.

Byrd suffered the injury Tuesday when he was struck by a pitch. He's had previous fractures in the same area and the Reds are still trying to figure out how much time he will miss. Brennan Boesch and Skip Schumaker will likely share playing time in left field.

Red Sox acquired OF Alejandro De Aza and cash considerations from the Orioles for RHP Joe Gunkel.

De Aza was designated for assignment by the O's last week after opening the season with a rough .214/.277/.359 batting line in 30 games. He seems doubtful to get much playing time in the crowded Boston outfield. Baltimore was paying him $5 million this season.

Jordan Lyles needs season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left big toe.

The procedure -- basically a Tommy John surgery for the toe -- is scheduled for June 10 in Denver. Lyles, 24, finishes the 2015 season with a 2-5 record, 5.14 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, and 30/19 K/BB ratio in 49 innings. Chris Rusin looks like the primary candidate to replace him in the Rockies' starting rotation.

J.J. Hardy (side) is out of the Orioles' lineup for a third straight game on Wednesday night.

An MRI taken Tuesday on Hardy's sore left side ruled out an oblique strain, but the O's are going to give him at least one more day of rest. Ryan Flaherty is starting at shortstop Wednesday night against the Astros.
Jun 3 - 5:02 PM

Brian McCann made an early exit from Wednesday's game against the Mariners with right foot soreness.

McCann is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday back in New York City, so this could be something serious. John Ryan Murphy entered Wednesday's game at catcher. Look for an update on McCann on Thursday afternoon. He's had problems with the foot at different points this season.
Jun 3 - 4:58 PM

Jose Abreu (finger) is back in the White Sox starting lineup Wednesday versus the Rangers.

Abreu missed several games with lingering irritation in his right index finger. It's something that might continue to bother him off and on for the rest of the summer, but the 28-year-old slugger should still remain a fantasy monster. Abreu is batting third and serving as Chicago's designated hitter in his return to action Wednesday night at Globe Life Park.
Jun 3 - 4:54 PM

Stephen Strasburg (trapezius) was able to play catch on flat ground Wednesday without issue.

Strasburg has been diagnosed with a trapezius strain on the left (non-throwing) side of his body. It's kind of a tricky injury, but it should heal with time and it's obviously a good sign that he already feels well enough to throw. Strasburg should return from the disabled list sometime later this month.
Jun 3 - 4:46 PM

Twins activated OF Oswaldo Arcia from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Rochester.

Arcia had zero hits in 14 plate appearances on his minor league rehab assignment, so the Twins will ask him to work on his stroke a bit more on the farm. He should be up soon enough. Minnesota doesn't have enough productive bats to warrant keeping Arcia at Triple-A for long.
Jun 3 - 4:42 PM

Trevor Rosenthal earned his 17th save of the season Wednesday in the Cardinals' 7-4 defeat of Milwaukee.

Mitch Harris opened the top of the ninth inning with St. Louis leading by four runs, but he gave up two singles so manager Mike Matheny turned it over to his flame-throwing stopper. Rosenthal did surrender an RBI single to Adam Lind, but he then induced a game-ending double play from Jonathan Lucroy. Rosenthal, 25, boasts a 1.08 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts through 26 innings this season.
Jun 3 - 4:39 PM

Eduardo Rodriguez was terrific again Wednesday, striking out seven across seven innings of one-run ball in a 6-3 win over the Twins.

Brian Dozier took Rodriguez deep in the third inning, but he yielded just one single otherwise and matched his 7/2 K/BB ratio from his major league debut last week. The left-hander has been hugely impressive in his first two outings, yielding just one run and five hits across 14 2/3 frames. He'll try to keep rolling the next time out in Baltimore.
Jun 3 - 4:25 PM

Cubs placed OF Jorge Soler on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain.

Soler suffered the injury Monday while running to first base and hadn't shown enough improvement over the last couple of days to warrant staying active. The 23-year-old Cuban should be ready when his 15-day stint is over. Junior Lake figures to get a nice boost in playing time over the next two weeks.
