According to Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune, "it's looking more and more like Erasmo Ramirez won't be in the Mariners starting rotation" on Opening Day.

Ramirez will pitch in relief Wednesday in a Cactus League game, which is an indication that the M's are considering moving him to the bullpen. The 22-year-old right-hander posted an excellent 3.36 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 48/12 K/BB ratio over his first 59 major league innings last season. He was one of our favorite fantasy sleepers for 2013, but he won't carry much value in long relief.

Jonathan Papelbon (intercostal) tossed a perfect inning Monday in his first minor league rehab appearance with High-A Potomac.

Papelbon struck out one batter and needed 10 pitches to get through the frame. He'll probably need at least one more appearance before rejoining the Nationals. Papelbon has been sidelined since June 12 with a right intercostal strain.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said that Josh Reddick (thumb) is track to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

Reddick, out since May 19 with fractured left thumb, is 3-for-20 (.150) with a homer over five rehab games with Triple-A Nashville. Assuming all goes well Monday, he's expected to return to the A's for Tuesday's game against the Giants. Reddick was batting .322/.394/.466 with five homers and 18 RBI in 44 games prior to the injury. He could become trade bait for Oakland next month if the two sides don't make progress on a contract extension. Joe Stiglich of CSNBayArea.com hears that Reddick is on a preliminary list of players under consideration by the Giants.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler said Monday that Garrett Richards has shown "progressive healing" in the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow.

Richards received a stem-cell injection six weeks ago in his efforts to avoid Tommy John surgery. Monday's exam was good news, but he's scheduled to be evaluated again in six weeks before the next step is determined. If Richards ends up needing Tommy John surgery, he would miss the entire 2017 season.

Lance McCullers has been scratched from Tuesday's start against the Angels due to a blister.

McCullers is dealing with a start of a small blister on his finger and the Astros don't want to take any chances. Scott Feldman will make the start in his place. McCullers could return to action as soon as this weekend against the White Sox.

Yunel Escobar (knee) remained out of the Angels' lineup Monday against the Astros.

Escobar has now missed four straight games. He was diagnosed with a bone bruise following an MRI and it's unclear when he'll be ready to return to action. Jefry Marte is filling in at third base again Monday.

Juan Lagares (thumb) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Binghamton.

He's expected to be joined by the newly-signed Jose Reyes, who will move up from Low-A Brooklyn on Tuesday. Lagares has been sidelined since June 14 with a sprained left thumb and still hopes to avoid surgery.

Cuban infielder Yulieski Gourriel had a 90-minute workout with the Mets on Monday in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Marc Carig of Newsday hears that the Mets had a "pretty big contingent" on hand, including general manager Sandy Alderson, special assistant J.P. Ricciardi, and some of the team's top scouts. The Mets added Jose Reyes on a minor league deal over the weekend and intend to give him playing time at third base, but the move isn't expected to impact their pursuit of Gourriel. Of course, Gourriel is going to cost them and they will face plenty of competition to land him. The 32-year-old also recently had a workout with the Dodgers.

DJ LeMahieu (knee) is absent from Monday's lineup versus the Blue Jays.

LeMahieu exited Sunday's game with a left knee contusion, but fortunately an MRI on Monday came back clean. He's still dealing with some soreness, but hopes to play Tuesday. Daniel Descalso will start in his place at second base and bat sixth Monday.
Jun 27 - 5:19 PM

Trevor Story (finger) is not in Monday's lineup against the Blue Jays.

Story suffered a bruised right middle finger when he was hit by a pitch on Sunday. Consider him day-to-day. Cristhian Adames will start in his place at shortstop and bat second against right-hander Marco Estrada.

Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News hears from three Mets sources that Steven Matz has a bone spur in his throwing elbow.

Matz has been dealing with discomfort in the elbow in his recent starts and is no longer a sure thing to make take his next scheduled turn Wednesday against the Nationals. Still, rest isn't expected to make much of a difference here. If he wants to delay surgery, he might have to pitch through the discomfort for the rest of the season. Logan Verrett and Sean Gilmartin are the candidates to start Wednesday if the Mets want to go in a different direction.

Nationals prospect Trea Turner is starting in center field Monday with Triple-A Syracuse, reports Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post.

The Nationals are happy with Danny Espinosa at shortstop, so the club is apparently exploring an alternative route to get Turner to the majors. Turner has never played the outfield in pro ball, but he's athletic enough to be a quick study. Nationals center fielders (mostly Ben Revere and Michael A. Taylor) have combined for a major-league worst .587 OPS this season, so this situation is worth watching.
