Blue Jays signed LHP J.A. Happ to a two-year, $8.9 million contract extension with a $6.7 million club option for 2015.

The move came just a day after it was announced that Happ won the job as the Blue Jays fifth starter. The 30-year-old had a 4.79 ERA between the Astros and Blue Jays in 2012, but this spring he's posted a 1.89 ERA in 19 innings. He'll receive plenty of run support in Toronto, so he's worth a look in AL-only fantasy leagues.

Mark Teixeira walked and hit a grand slam in four plate appearances Monday, leading the Yankees past the Mariners.

Teixeira knocked ace Felix Hernandez out of the game with his fifth-inning grand slam. At the rate he's going, he'll reach 30 home runs in a season for the first time since 2011. He's at 15 now along with 39 RBI and a .241/.358/.566 batting line.

Albert Pujols crushed a pair of home runs, going 3-for-5 as the Angels topped the Rays on Monday.

Pujols gave the Angels plenty of insurance with his homers. His first, in the fifth inning, extended the lead to 5-3. His second, in the eighth inning, made it 7-3. Pujols -- now with five home runs in his last five games -- has 533 round-trippers in his career, leaving him one short of tying Jimmie Foxx for 17th on the all-time leaderboard. Pujols also has 13 homers on the season along with 26 RBI and a .254/.304/.497 triple-slash line.
Jun 2 - 1:10 AM

Gerrit Cole allowed only a pair of unearned runs over seven innings to pick up his eighth win of the season against the Giants on Monday.

Jung Ho Kang's fielding error and a wild pitch contributed to the Giants scoring twice in the first inning. Cole settled down from there, limiting the Giants to five hits and a pair of walks while striking out nine. The 24-year-old has been among baseball's best, now 8-2 with a 1.90 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, and a 79/16 K/BB ratio over 71 innings. Cole will take the hill against the Braves in Atlanta next.
Jun 2 - 12:55 AM

Jacob deGrom was excellent in a winning effort on Monday, shutting the Padres out over eight innings of work.

DeGrom was flirting with a perfect game until Clint Barmes singled to right field to lead off the sixth inning. It was one of only two hits the right-hander gave up on the evening. He also struck out eight without issuing a walk. A few mediocre outings earlier in the season had deGrom's ERA as high as 3.46, but it's all the way down to 2.41 now along with a terrific 0.99 WHIP and a 71/13 K/BB ratio in 71 innings. He'll try to win his fourth straight decision in a weekend road start against the Diamondbacks.
Jun 2 - 12:39 AM

Freddie Freeman homered and drove in three runs in a 3-for-5 effort as the Braves defeated the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Freeman pushed the Braves' lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning with a two-run home run. He added an RBI single in the sixth. The first baseman has predictably solid numbers, batting .297/.363/.503 with eight home runs and 29 RBI on the year.

Tuffy Gosewisch has been diagnosed with a full tear of his left ACL.

Gosewisch will undergo season-ending surgery soon. It's a real bummer for a 31-year-old who was getting his first shot at a starting job in the big leagues. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is the Diamondbacks' new starting catcher.
Jun 2 - 12:22 AM

Adrian Gonzalez had a perfect night at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a walk and a pair of doubles as the Dodgers routed the Rockies on Monday.

In one night, Gonzalez exceeded the amount of hits he had accrued in his previous five ballgames. Despite reaching base five times, the Dodgers -- who scored 11 runs -- only brought him home once, in the eighth inning. The effort brings Gonzalez's OPS back up over 1.000. He has a .339/.415/.611 triple-slash line with 10 home runs and 35 RBI.
Jun 1 - 11:50 PM

Carlos Gomez went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, providing the Brewers their only run as they staved off the Cardinals on Monday.

Gomez brought Jean Segura home on an RBI single in the first inning against Jaime Garcia. The two teams would exchange goose-eggs the rest of the way. Gomez is on a five-game hitting streak and now carries a .264/.309/.457 triple-slash line with five home runs, 21 RBI, and five stolen bases.
Jun 1 - 11:17 PM

Luis Valbuena went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Monday's victory over the Orioles.

Valbuena tied the game up in the fifth inning with a solo home run off of Ubaldo Jimenez. He also scored the go-ahead run in a four-run seventh inning. 10 of Valbuena's 11 home runs this season have been of the solo variety. Along with 19 RBI, he's hitting .196/.260/.413.

Marlins optioned RHP Steve Cishek to Double-A Jacksonville.

It's been a stunning fall for a guy who has been one of the better relievers in the National League over the previous four seasons. Sending Cishek down to work on his mechanics in a less pressurized situation could be the best thing, though. Cishek has been better of late after being removed from the closer role, but he still holds an ugly 6.98 ERA and 1.86 WHIP with 10 walks over 19 1/3 innings.
Jun 1 - 10:39 PM

Jason Hammel struck out 11 batters and allowed only one run in 6 2/3 innings of work en route to a win against the Marlins on Monday.

11 punch-outs marks a career-high for Hammel. He had previously struck out 10 batters on three occasions, last occurring in June 2012. The Marlins' only run came home in the third inning when Giancarlo Stanton stole third base and scored on catcher Miguel Montero's throwing error. Hammel surrendered only five hits in total while walking none. He boasts a sterling 2.82 ERA with a 0.90 WHIP and a 69/7 K/BB ratio over 67 innings this season. He'll look to keep it going in a weekend road start versus the Nationals.
