Mets placed RHP Shaun Marcum on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22, with right biceps tendinitis.

The Mets were hoping to keep Marcum active, but he is simply not where he needs to be physically. The hope is that he could be ready to go for the sixth game of the regular season, but there's no guarantee he'll be ready by then. If he's not, Aaron Laffey could be a candidate to start. The Mets will roll with an eight-man bullpen for now.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Jorge De La Rosa has been claimed and blocked on revocable waivers.

It's not clear who made the waiver claim or when it happened, but Heyman says "it was long enough ago that he is now considered blocked." De La Rosa would have been a solid get for a contender, as he holds a solid 4.19 ERA this season despite pitching half his games at Coors Field and boasts a 3.23 mark since the beginning of July. The left-hander will be a free agent this winter and Heyman says the Rockies will make him a qualifying offer if they're not able to lock him up on a long-term deal.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that both the Orioles and Nelson Cruz "have expressed an interest" in a contract extension.

Heyman cautions that "there's no definitive immediate word of any early negotiations," but it does appear the two sides are interested "in continuing the marriage, if possible." The report also adds that the O's will extend Cruz a qualifying offer this offseason if they're unable to lock him up on a long-term deal. After having to settle for a one-year, $8 million deal in late February, Cruz has gone on to hit a career-high 34 homers so far for Baltimore, a total that leads all of baseball.

Howie Kendrick hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give the Angels a 4-3 win over the A's.

The Angels had squandered a bases loaded situation in the 9th inning. They made up for it the next inning on a Howie Kendrick sacrifice fly that scored Albert Pujols. Kendrick would finish the game 2-for-3 with the one RBI. He's slashing .281/.337/.370 this season.

Josh Donaldson hit a solo home run in the sixth inning of the A's 4-3 loss to the Angels on Thursday.

Donaldson hit the bomb off of Angels starter C.J. Wilson. He also doubled in the contest, finishing 2-for-3 with one RBI and two walks. He has 88 RBI to go with the 26 long balls. While Donaldson's average is down from his breakout 2013 campaign (.256 this year vs .301 in 2013), he's been an integral part of the A's offense this season, having already set a career high in home runs. He's also on-pace to set a career high for RBI. On the year, he's slashing .256/.346/.471.

Jordan Schafer went 3-for-5 with four runs batted in and a stolen base in Thursday's 10-inning victory against the Royals.

Schafer singled in a run in the fourth inning, doubled in a run in the sixth, and knocked in two insurance runs with a 10th-inning single. He has performed well since joining the Twins on a waiver claim, batting .328 (21-for-64) with 10 stolen bases since August 5. Schafer is on an eight-game hitting streak as well.

Carlos Carrasco continued to pitch well on Thursday, earning the win after limiting the White Sox to one run over 6 2/3 innings.

Carrasco has pitched like a completely new player since rejoining the rotation on August 10. Over his last four starts, including Thursday's effort, he has a 0.73 ERA with a 24/3 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings. Against the White Sox, he surrendered only four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Carrasco will look to continue his hot streak on Tuesday at home against the Tigers. He's worth grabbing in mixed leagues as long as he keeps pitching like this.

Jason Castro's fifth inning grand slam was the deciding factor in Thursday's victory over the Rangers.

Castro finished 2-for-3 with a walk and the salami. His fifth inning 420-foot shot to right field off of Roman Mendez would prove to be the only offense the Astros would muster on the evening but it was enough behind a strong start from Collin McHugh. Castro had been held hitless in each of his previous six games spanning 22 plate appearances. On the season, he has 13 home runs, 50 RBI, and a .227/.297/.377 slash line.

Adam Jones went 2-for-3 with a walk and a steal of home in Thursday's victory against the Rays.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Orioles pulled off a delayed steal with Nelson Cruz attempting to steal second base and Jones going home after the throw. The last time an Oriole stole home came on June 14, 2009 against the Braves, when Robert Andino accomplished the feat. Jones is slashing .288/.317/.475 with 24 home runs and 78 RBI on the season.

Mets purchased the contract of 2B Dilson Herrera from Double-A Binghamton.

Well, that's a surprise. Daniel Murphy (calf) is headed to the disabled list and the Mets have made a bold move to give Herrera a shot. Acquired last season from the Pirates, Herrera entered play Thursday batting .319/.377/.471 with 12 homers, 70 RBI and 20 stolen bases between High- and Double-A and then went 3-for-4 with a homer for Binghamton. The 20-year-old should play regularly for the Mets while Murphy is out and is worth a shot in fantasy leagues even if he might not be ready.
Aug 28 - 10:30 PM

Mets placed 2B Daniel Murphy on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 25, with a right calf strain.

The results from Murphy's MRI aren't known yet, but the club will proceed cautiously and place him on the DL regardless. Dilson Herrera will come up to play second base for the Mets.

Yankees acquired LHP Josh Outman from the Indians in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.

Outman had been at Triple-A Columbus after being removed from the Indians' 40-man roster, but he'll report to the big club with the Yankees. He has control issues (16 walks in 24 2/3 innings this season), but Outman has struck out over a batter per inning in his career as a reliever and held lefties to a .188/.257/.287 batting line.
