Jose Bautista left Thursday's game after the eighth inning with a twisted ankle.

Bautista must have injured himself when he grounded into an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth. He is considered day-to-day. Rajai Davis figures to fill in should Bautista, who hit a two-run homer earlier in the game, need to miss a game or two.

Chase Headley is starting in the designated hitter spot and batting ninth for the Yankees in Friday's ALCS Game 6 versus the Astros.

Headley hasn't done much this postseason, but he had three hits in Game 5, earning another start in the DH spot Friday. The Yankees' full lineup is as follows: Brett Gardner LF, Aaron Judge RF, Didi Gregorius SS, Gary Sanchez C, Greg Bird 1B, Starlin Castro 2B, Aaron Hicks CF, Todd Frazier 3B, Headley DH.

Evan Gattis is starting in the designated hitter spot and batting eighth for the Astros in ALCS Game 6 on Friday versus the Yankees.

Carlos Beltran has started four of the five games so far this series in the DH spot, but it will be Gattis in there Friday against right-hander Luis Severino. The Astros' full lineup looks like this: George Springer CF, Josh Reddick RF, Jose Altuve 2B, Carlos Correa SS, Yulieski Gurriel 1B, Alex Bregman 3B, Marwin Gonzalez LF, Gattis DH, Brian McCann C.

Daniel Murphy underwent a debridement and microfracture surgery on Friday to repair damage to the articular cartilage in his right knee.

Murphy tore the MCL in the same knee many years ago but this is the first we've heard of any knee issues since then. The Nationals did not reveal a timetable for his return, only saying that he will rehab "throughout the offseason." It's a significant operation, so it's certainly possible that Murphy will be limited in spring training.

The Tigers on Friday announced the hiring of Ron Gardenhire as their new manager.

Gardenhire has received a three-year contract. The former Twins skipper went 1,068-1,039 in 13 seasons in Minnesota and this past season served as the Diamondbacks' bench coach. It'll be a tough gig for the soon-to-be 60-year-old, as the Tigers are facing a rebuilding effort.
Oct 20 - 12:39 PM

The Nationals will not bring back manager Dusty Baker for the 2018 season.

The Nats won back-to-back National League East titles under Baker, but they were eliminated in Game 5 of the NLDS both seasons. That, and the ownership group reportedly being unhappy when Baker complained at midseason that he hadn't been given a contract extension, appears to have cost the skipper his job. The Nationals will be hiring their seventh manager in 14 seasons. No manager has lasted more than 2 1/2 years on the job.

Kiké Hernandez hit three homers and drove in seven runs Thursday as the Dodgers crushed the Cubs 11-1 to win Game 5 of the NLCS and advance to the World Series.

Hernandez had a solo homer in the second, a grand slam to break the game open in the third and then a two-run shot to punctuate his night in the ninth. He became the first player to hit three homers in a postseason game since... well, since Jose Altuve two weeks ago against the Red Sox. However, he's just the fifth player ever to knock in seven runs and the first National Leaguer ever. The last American Leaguer was Boston's Troy O'Leary in the 1999 ALDS. He's the first player with three homers and seven RBI in a postseason game.

The Tigers have decided they want Ron Gardenhire as their next manager, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reports.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that Gardenhire will receive a three-year deal. Gardenhire was interviewed for the Red Sox job, but it's expected that the nod there will go to Alex Cora. Assuming that's how it works out, then Gardenhire will return to the AL Central with the Tigers. The soon-to-be 60-year-old was 1,068-1,039 in 13 seasons with the Twins before being let go three years ago.

Ben Zobrist is starting in right field and batting eighth in Game 5 of the NLCS on Thursday night against the Dodgers.

Jason Heyward and Jon Jay are on the bench with Los Angeles throwing left-hander Clayton Kershaw. Here is the full lineup for the Cubs, who trail 3-1 in the best-of-seven series: Albert Almora CF, Kyle Schwarber LF, Kris Bryant 3B, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Willson Contreras C, Addison Russell SS, Javier Baez 2B, Ben Zobrist RF, Jose Quintana SP.

Michael Brantley underwent surgery Wednesday to stabilize the ligaments in his right ankle.

The rehabilitation for such a procedure typically lasts 4-5 months, which could mean Brantley won't be able to participate in much of spring training and might be in danger of missing the start of the 2018 season. Cleveland holds an $11 million club option (or $1 million buyout) on the 30-year-old outfielder. He batted .299/.357/.444 with nine home runs and 52 RBI in 90 games this summer.
Oct 19 - 11:10 AM

Javier Baez went 2-for-3 with two solo blasts in a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLCS on Wednesday.

Both of the blasts came off of Alex Wood, one in the second and one in the fifth. Baez has struggled to hit for average in this postseason, but he's now slugging .889 for this series, which is good. With his bat speed, he can turn any pitch on any part of the plate out of the park. Baez and the Cubs will look to stay alive and take the series to Los Angeles in Game 5 on Thursday.
Oct 19 - 12:21 AM

Masahiro Tanaka was brilliant on Wednesday, giving up just three hits in seven shutout innings of a 5-0 win over the Astros in Game 5 of the ALCS.

Tanaka was good in Game 1, but that performance pales in comparison to his effort on Wednesday. The only time Houston challenged him was when they had runners on first-and-second with one out in the fifth, but he struck out George Springer and Josh Reddick to end the threat. Long-story-short, Tanaka has pitched like the ace the Yankees paid for this postseason. Game Six will be played in Houston on Friday.
