Andrelton Simmons has been scratched from Saturday's lineup with a left thumb sprain.

The Braves are calling it a day-to-day situation. Simmons played all nine innings in Friday's game, so the injury isn't believed to be serious. Ramiro Pena will take his spot Saturday against the Cubs.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Marlins are among the teams that have been discussing Andrew Cashner with the Padres.

The Orioles are also known to be negotiating with the Padres. The Marlins could become a legitimate title contender in the National League with the addition of a second starter behind Jose Fernandez, and Cashner could fit the bill potentially.

Jeff Samardzija has had his scheduled start against the Yankees pushed back to Sunday.

That means it'll be Johnny Cueto, not Samardzija, taking on Ivan Nova and the Yankees on Saturday. Make sure to adjust your lineups accordingly if you had planned on attacking Samardzija in daily leagues.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Orioles and Blue Jays are the leaders in the pursuit of Melvin Upton.

The interest in Upton has certainly intensified in the past day or so, and it's looking increasingly likely that he'll be wearing a new uniform in August. While a park shift away from Petco Park could seem like a boon to his fantasy value, he hasn't handled changes of scenery well in the past, and isn't likely to land with a manager as willing to run as Andy Green has been this season.

Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4 and drove home a pair of runs on Friday, leading the Tigers to a 7-5 victory over the White Sox in Chicago.

Cabrera delivered a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning that broke a 5-5 tie and stood as the difference in the ballgame. The first run that scored on that play gave the veteran slugger 1500 RBI for his big league career, a milestone that has only been achieved by 55 other players in MLB history. Even though he has slumped as of late, Cabrera is still hitting .300/.376/.515 with 19 homers and 56 RBI on the year.

Lance McCullers struck out 10 batters over eight-plus innings of one-run ball in a 2-1 win over the Angels on Friday.

It was his longest outing of the season. McCullers gave up four hits and walked four while striking out Mike Trout three times. The young right-hander struck out the side in the eighth inning, so he entered the ninth inning with a chance to go the distance, but he was pulled after walking the first two batters he faced. Still, it was a fantastic outing. His 10 strikeouts tied a season-high. McCullers has a 3.33 ERA with 90 strikeouts in 70 1/3 innings through 12 starts this season, but walks (42) have been a big issue for him. He has now walked four batters in three straight starts.
Jul 23 - 12:19 AM

Kyle Gibson delivered an outstanding performance in Friday's victory over the Red Sox, allowing just two hits over eight innings of one-run ball.

Gibson walked one and punched out six on the evening. He gave up a leadoff home run to Mookie Betts to begin the ballgame, then shut down the vaunted Red Sox offense for eight innings. He'll look to further improve upon a 4.67 ERA and 1.39 WHIP when he squares off against Orioles at home on Thursday.
Jul 23 - 12:14 AM

Dexter Fowler celebrated his return from the disabled list by going 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored in Friday’s win over the Brewers.

Fresh off missing a month and change with a hamstring injury, Fowler didn’t need any time to shake the rust. He made an immediate impact by socking a leadoff homer against Jimmy Nelson before adding an RBI double one inning later. The 30-year-old faded a bit in June prior to the injury, but he still owns a cool .298/.405/.504 batting line on the year.
Jul 22 - 11:50 PM

Dan Straily racked up eight strikeouts over six innings of two-run ball in a victory over the Diamondbacks on Friday.

The right-hander scattered five hits and three walks on the evening. The D'Backs jumped on him with two runs in the first inning, but Straily was able to settle in beautifully afterwards, finishing his night with five shutout innings. Now 5-6 on the season, he'll look to replicate this fine effort when he does battle against the Giants in San Francisco on Wednesday.
Jul 22 - 11:28 PM

Matt Kemp blasted a pair of home runs and drove home four on Friday, powering the Padres to a 5-3 victory over the Nationals.

Kemp got the Padres on the board with a solo shot off of Tanner Roark in the first inning, then tacked on a three-run blast in the fifth to cap off the club's scoring. He has been on a home run barrage this week, launching six home runs in his last six games. With his 2-for-4 effort on Friday, Kemp is now hitting .258/.278/.484 with 22 homers and 67 RBI.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Orioles have talked to the Padres about Melvin Upton.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported earlier in the day that the Padres had told suitors that they were close to dealing Upton, and perhaps it's the O's who are hot on the trail after losing Joey Rickard for the next 4-to-6 weeks. It would certainly be an upgrade in home ballpark for Upton.
Jul 22 - 10:53 PM

James Paxton limited the Blue Jays to one run in seven innings as part of a 2-1 win on Friday.

That’s more like it. Paxton has scuffled a bit of late, but he was flat-out brilliant in this one, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out nine. He had struck out just five batters over his last three starts combined. The lone run scored on a solo homer by Michael Saunders in the second inning. Paxton will likely continue to have ups and downs, but a night like this showed what he's capable of doing. He'll bring a 4.18 ERA into a tough matchup against the Cubs next week.
