Jered Weaver was removed from Sunday night's game with a strained left elbow.

Weaver hyperextended his left (non-pitching) elbow while trying to avoid a line drive hit by Mitch Moreland. He was already at 98 pitches so he likely would have been coming out anyway. Weaver gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings, including a pair of home runs to Lance Berkman and David Murphy. The Angels will reevaluate him early next week before a timetable for his return is established.

Asdrubal Cabrera went 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored as the Rays trounced the White Sox 11-3 on Tuesday.

Cabrera hit one of the Rays' four homers on the night, taking reliever Daniel Webb deep in the seventh inning. It was his third consecutive two-hit game and extended his hitting streak to a modest eight games. Cabrera has raised his average 21 points in that span, and he's now hitting .241/.294/.390 with seven homers on the season.

Richie Shaffer hit his first major league home run in Tuesday's win over the White Sox.

Shaffer took reliever Daniel Webb deep for a solo homer in the seventh inning to get on the board. He also walked and scored another run in the game. It's not surprising that it took Shaffer just two games to find the seats, as he hit 16 homers in 55 games at Triple-A this year before being promoted. The homer certainly won't be the last for the former first-round pick.
Aug 5 - 12:11 AM

Matt Duffy went 4-for-5 with an RBI double, a run scored and a stolen base as the Giants topped the Braves 8-3 on Tuesday.

Duffy had three singles to go with his RBI double, and the steal was his fifth of the year. The infielder hasn't had back-to-back hitless games since July 2-3, and Tuesday's outburst has his line up to .309/.346/.465. He'll have some stiff competition, but Duffy is square in the middle of the Rookie of the Year race in the National League.
Aug 4 - 11:31 PM

Maikel Franco hit a grand slam in the seventh inning, helping the Phillies fend off the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Franco, who finished 1-for-4, made the Dodgers pay for some erratic pitching in the seventh when he ripped a Joel Peralta pitch into the stands in left field for a tie-breaking grand slam, putting the Phillies up 5-1. Franco is on a six-game hitting streak, batting .282/.339/.491 overall with 12 home runs and 44 RBI. If he can keep it up, he'll be in the conversation for the NL Rookie of the Year Award at the end of the season.
Aug 4 - 11:06 PM

Jon Niese held the Marlins to one run over seven innings in the Mets' 5-1 win on Tuesday.

Niese gave up a run in the third inning but otherwise kept the Marlins in check. The southpaw allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out six. The strong start was his third such in his last four starts, but he's just 6-9 on the year. Niese will take a 3.51 ERA and 1.33 WHIP into Monday's start against the Rockies.
Aug 4 - 10:58 PM

Wilson Ramos hit a tie-breaking two-run single in the eighth inning, proving crucial in Tuesday's one-run victory against the Diamondbacks.

Ramos broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning when he plated two runs against reliever David Hernandez. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk on the evening. The catcher hasn't been much to write home about offensively, batting .239/.266/.365 with nine home runs and 45 RBI.
Aug 4 - 10:53 PM

Mets acquired LHP Eric O'Flaherty and cash considerations from the Athletics in exchange for a player to be named later.

O'Flaherty was designated for assignment by the A's last weekend but has landed on his feet quickly. The left-hander hasn't been the same pitcher since all the injuries hit, as his 5.91 ERA in 25 games for Oakland this year can attest. He can still get lefties out, though, having held them to a .186/.286/.209 batting line this season. O'Flaherty is taking Alex Torres' spot in the bullpen.
Aug 4 - 10:50 PM

Jake Arrieta didn't let the Pirates touch home plate in his seven innings of work, earning the win on Tuesday.

The right-hander was dominant, yielding only two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in the effort. After breaking out last season with a 2.53 ERA -- following years of mediocrity with the Orioles -- Arrieta has repeated this season, brandishing a 2.50 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and a 152/37 K/BB ratio over 147 2/3 innings. He'll make a home start against the Giants next.
Aug 4 - 10:31 PM

Anthony Rizzo went 4-for-5 with a two doubles and two runs scored in Tuesday's win against the Pirates.

Rizzo doubled and scored in the third inning, and did the same in the fifth, accounting for two of the Cubs' five runs in their shutout win. The first baseman is having a terrific year, though it's been cast aside slightly by Bryce Harper and Paul Goldschmidt. Rizzo is batting .293/.401/.534 with 20 home runs, 61 RBI, 59 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases.
Aug 4 - 10:28 PM

Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the ninth inning to close out the Reds' 3-2 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Chapman fanned Kolten Wong and Randal Grichuk before getting Mark Reynolds to fly out to end the game. The left-hander now owns a 1.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 81/24 K/BB ratio over 45 2/3 innings this year. He could have gained some trade value with a move at the deadline, but even in Cincinnati Chapman is the game's best reliever.
Aug 4 - 10:17 PM

Salvador Perez had a terrific night in the batter's box, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's win versus the Tigers.

Perez put the Royals up 1-0 in the second inning with an RBI single, then extended it to 3-0 in the fourth with a two-run home run off of Justin Verlander. The backstop had been mired in a slump, batting .074 (2-for-27) in his last eight games. Perez is carrying a slugging-heavy .249/.262/.425 batting line with 16 home runs and 46 RBI this season.
