White Sox placed INF Angel Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

It's not clear at this point how long Sanchez will be out. Tyler Greene has taken the Rule 5 pick's roster spot.

Max Scherzer picked up his 17th victory of the season on Saturday, limiting the Royals to one run on seven hits over seven strong innings of work.

Scherzer punched out six on the afternoon while issuing only one free pass. The only damage against him came on an RBI single off the bat of Alcides Escobar in the fifth inning. Now 17-7 on the year, he will head into Thursday’s matchup against the Twins with a 3.19 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 243/59 K/BB ratio.

Nationals activated INF Ryan Zimmerman from the 15-day disabled list.

Zimmerman missed 55 games with a torn hamstring, but has taken at-bats in extended spring training games in recent days and is ready for a return. He will bat sixth and start in left field on Saturday. The Nationals will ease him back into action though, so fantasy owners shouldn't expect him to play every night over the final week of the regular season.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said late Friday that there is a "distinct possibility" that Jacoby Ellsbury (hamstring) will be shut down for the remainder of the 2014 season.

Ellsbury sustained a strained hamstring in Friday's win over the Blue Jays and is set to undergo an MRI on Saturday. With the Yankees playoff hopes all but finished, there's no reason to rush Ellsbury back and risk further aggravation.

Dustin Ackley had big night at the plate Friday against the Astros, going 2-for-4 with two solo home runs, a walk, and three runs scored.

It was the second multi-homer game of his career. Ackley came into Friday's action 3-for-35 (.086) this month. The Mariners and fantasy owners will have to hope that the big game will get him going again.
Sep 20 - 1:15 AM

Michael Cuddyer clobbered a grand slam and drove home a career-high seven runs as the Rockies routed the Diamondbacks 15-3 in Colorado on Friday.

Cuddyer did all of his damage in the second half of the ballgame, smashing his grand slam in the sixth inning, then delivering a bases-clearing double with the bases loaded his next time up in the eighth. There's no doubting his production when he's been on the field, but unfortunately for fantasy owners that hasn't been often enough this season.
Sep 20 - 12:18 AM

David Ortiz blasted a pair of home runs on Friday, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the 10th inning, powering the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Orioles.

Ortiz got the Red Sox on the board with a solo blast in the fourth inning, which was immediately followed by another off the bat of Yoenis Cespedes. He then delivered a massive two-run shot off Darren O'Day in the 10th inning to put the Red Sox ahead for good, finishing the night 3-for-5 with three RBI. He now has 34 homers and 102 RBI on the season, making it a club record eighth time that he has reached the 30-homer/100-RBI plateaus, surpassing Ted Williams.
Sep 19 - 11:42 PM

Russell Martin hit a dramatic go-ahead three-run homer in a 4-2 win over the Brewers on Friday night.

After Yovani Gallardo pitched seven scoreless innings, Martin put the Pirates in front in the eighth inning against Jonathan Broxton and sent PNC Park into pandemonium. The veteran backstop has had a fantastic under-the-radar year, batting .296/.408/441 with 11 home runs and 66 RBI while throwing out 39 percent of attempted basestealers. He's a big reason why the Pirates are currently on track for their second straight postseason appearance. Look for him to land a nice contract in free agency this winter.

Edwin Encarnacion smacked a two-run homer in Friday's loss to the Yankees.

Encarnacion underwent a precautionary MRI on his back early Friday, but he felt well enough to play. The 31-year-old now has 33 homers on the year, which ties him for fifth in the American League.
Sep 19 - 10:11 PM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated Friday that the team could utilize a three-man rotation in the American League Division Series.

Assuming Matt Shoemaker makes it back healthy, it would presumably be he, C.J. Wilson and Jered Weaver, with Weaver getting the call to work on short rest. Given the critical importance of those games and the uncertainty surrounding the rest of the rotation, it certainly seems like a viable strategy on the Halos end.
Sep 19 - 7:27 PM

Brandon Belt (concussion) is in the Giants starting lineup on Friday.

It marks the first time that he has been in there since early August when he suffered a recurrence of his concussion-like symptoms. It has been a season ravaged by injuries for the 26-year-old slugger, who is hitting just .237/.299/.446 with 11 homers and 24 RBI in his 52 contests.
Sep 19 - 7:16 PM

Clayton Kershaw had one of his worst starts of the season but still notched win No. 20 Friday, allowing three runs over five frames in a 14-5 clobbering of the Cubs.

Kershaw looked off from the jump after having to wait a while to take the mound following the Dodgers’ six-run top of the first inning. He gave three runs back in the bottom of the frame and had to pitch out of jams in each of the next four innings. Kershaw gave up seven hits and walked three on the day, though he did record nine punchouts. The lefty still sports a microscopic 1.80 ERA after the less-than-sharp effort. He’ll get the Giants next week in his final start of the regular season.
