Blue Jays sent RHP Jeremy Jeffress outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

Jeffress was designated for assignment on April 6 so that the Blue Jays could clear a roster spot for Dave Bush. He then passed through waivers with relative ease.

Marco Scutaro underwent fusion surgery of the L2 and L3 in his back Sunday and will be sidelined for 4-6 months.

This comes after Scutaro appeared in just five games this past season due to a chronic back problem. The 39-year-old is owed $6 million in 2015, but there's a real chance his tenure with the Giants is over, if not his career.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, starter Dan Haren is "holding out hope" for a trade to the Angels or Padres.

Haren told ESPN Los Angeles in November that he would rather retire than pitch for a team located outside of Southern California due to family reasons, and now that pledge will be put to the test following the December 11 trade that sent him from the Dodgers to the Marlins. Haren had an underwhelming 4.02 ERA and 145/36 K/BB ratio in 186 innings this past season for the Dodgers and a 4.67 ERA in 2013 for the Nationals, so moving him might not be all that easy for Miami. He is 34 years old.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports confirms that the Padres have re-signed Josh Johnson.

It's a one-year deal worth $1 million guaranteed, and it also includes another $6.25 million in performance-based incentives. Johnson missed the entire 2014 season due to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery -- the second of his career. He should be recovered sometime in May or early June.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Pirates won the bidding for Korean infielder Jung-Ho Kang.

Pittsburgh's front office now has exclusive negotiating rights to attempt to work out a major league contract with Kang. There have been questions raised about the 27-year-old's defensive capabilities, especially at the shortstop position, but Kang batted .356/.459/.739 with 40 home runs and 117 RBI in 117 games this past season for the Nexen Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization. Jordy Mercer hit .255/.305/.387 in 2014 as the Bucs' primary starter at short.

Giants re-signed RHP Sergio Romo to a two-year, $15 million contract.

The free agent deal was agreed to last week and then officially announced Monday after Romo passed his pre-signing physical. The 31-year-old righty was probably hoping to hit it much bigger this winter in a relief market that has yielded four-year deals for David Robertson and Andrew Miller, but Romo finished the 2014 season with a relatively-underwhelming 3.72 ERA in 58 innings. He put up a 2.03 ERA in 225 2/3 innings between 2010-2013.

According to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres do not intend to trade Wil Myers.

Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News reported over the weekend that the Padres have expressed interested in acquiring Phillies ace Cole Hamels and that Myers, whom the Padres just acquired from the Rays, could be included in the deal. But Lin hears Monday from "sources within the organization" that Myers will be in center field for San Diego on Opening Day 2015. Let's not rule anything out quite yet.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Yankees have checked in with the Rockies on Troy Tulowitzki.

Heyman reported late last week that the Mets and Rockies had been "quietly discussing" the parameters of a Tulowitzki trade, but the two sides have not been able to find a match. And while the Yankees also have a big hole at shortstop, they probably don't possess the kind of elite-level prospects that Colorado would want in a return package. Heyman writes Monday that it "remains unclear how committed the Rockies-owning Monfort brothers are to trading the beloved Tulo."

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that Phil Hughes has agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract extension with the Twins.

The extension wipes out the final two years and $16 million on Hughes' original three-year, $24 million deal with the Twins. So it's essentially a five-year, $58 million pact, and it'll keep Hughes in Minnesota through the 2019 season. The 28-year-old right-hander revitalized his career in 2014, posting a 3.52 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 186/16 K/BB ratio across 209 2/3 innings. He had a 5.19 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 2013, his final year with the Yankees.

Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News reports that the Padres have had discussions with the Phillies regarding Cole Hamels.

Lawrence notes that any trade package for Hamels could revolve around the newly-acquired Wil Myers. The Padres have pulled off several blockbuster moves in the past week, and acquiring an elite top of the rotation left-hander would be another strong acquisition.

Agent Scott Boras has said that his client, Matt Wieters (elbow), will be ready to play on Opening Day.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said last week that it's possible Wieters won't be ready for the opener as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, but Boras doesn't seem to think it will be an issue. The O's will no doubt take things slowly with the catcher in spring training and we likely won't know for sure until he starts playing in Grapefruit League action whether he can be penciled into the lineup on April 6 versus the Rays.
Dec 21 - 12:00 PM

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that James Shields' contract demands are expected to be around five years and $110 million.

It's the same amount left on Cole Hamels' contract, assuming Hamels' option is picked up, and is a reasonable demand after Jon Lester landed a $155 million deal from the Cubs. Cafardo says that the Giants and Red Sox are "in the picture" for Shields, while the Yankees "may be another suitor." Shields, who just turned 33, holds a 3.64 ERA over his eight full seasons and has made at least 31 starts every year during that stretch.
