Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that a May 1 return for Derek Jeter (ankle) is very unlikely.

That's the date that Jeter and the Yankees' medical staff had been targeting, but it's simply not feasible anymore. Jeter is taking daily batting practice and fielding grounders at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Florida but he isn't close to appearing in rehab games. "He'll be back when he's back," said Girardi.

Eduardo Rodriguez was terrific again Wednesday, striking out seven across seven innings of one-run ball in a 6-3 win over the Twins.

Brian Dozier took Rodriguez deep in the third inning, but he yielded just one single otherwise and matched his 7/2 K/BB ratio from his major league debut last week. The left-hander has been hugely impressive in his first two outings, yielding just one run and five hits across 14 2/3 frames. He'll try to keep rolling the next time out in Baltimore.
Jun 3 - 4:25 PM

Cubs placed OF Jorge Soler on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain.

Soler suffered the injury Monday while running to first base and hadn't shown enough improvement over the last couple of days to warrant staying active. The 23-year-old Cuban should be ready when his 15-day stint is over. Junior Lake figures to get a nice boost in playing time over the next two weeks.
Jun 3 - 4:14 PM

Prince Fielder is out of the Rangers' lineup Wednesday.

It's just a day of rest for Fielder, who had started all 52 games this season. Mitch Moreland is at first base and Joey Gallo will DH on Wednesday against the White Sox.
Jun 3 - 4:09 PM

Josh Hamilton (hamstring) is out of the Rangers' starting lineup again on Wednesday night.

Hamilton has some mild tightness in his left hamstring and the Rangers are going to play it safe with the 33-year-old slugger. Jake Smolinski is in left field and Joey Gallo is at DH on Wednesday versus the White Sox.
Jun 3 - 4:08 PM

Edwin Encarnacion (hamstring) is out of the Blue Jays' starting lineup again on Wednesday night.

Encarnacion has been limited to pinch-hitting duties over the last few days due to discomfort in his left hamstring. It doesn't sound like anything too severe. Justin Smoak will start at first base Wednesday at Nationals Park.
Jun 3 - 4:03 PM

Denard Span (knee) is back in the Nationals' lineup Wednesday.

Span hadn't played since leaving Sunday's game with renewed discomfort in his right knee, but he's feeling ready to give it a go. The outfielder is batting .314/.356/.504 for the Nats this season.
Jun 3 - 3:36 PM

Salvador Perez (head) is not in the Royals' lineup Wednesday.

Perez passed concussion tests after leaving Tuesday's game following a foul tip to the mask, but he has a bit of a headache Wednesday. The Royals will hope he's ready to go on Thursday. Drew Butera is filling in behind the dish.
Jun 3 - 3:01 PM

Hunter Pence is not in Wednesday's lineup due to a minor left wrist injury.

You always have to worry a bit when it's a wrist injury, but it seems the Giants are convinced this is a minor issue. The Giants are off Thursday, so they'll shoot for Pence to be back in there Friday.
Jun 3 - 2:55 PM

Yankees designated RHP David Carpenter for assignment.

Carpenter has struggled this season, holding a 4.82 ERA with just 11 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings. His velocity has been fine, though, so it's a surprise to see the Yankees give up on him considering his 2.63 ERA and over a strikeout per frame across the previous two seasons. The Yanks should be able to find a trade partner for him.
Jun 3 - 2:13 PM

Yankees activated RHP Masahiro Tanaka from the 15-day disabled list.

Tanaka will rejoin the rotation on Wednesday against the Mariners and is slated for 80-85 pitches. The right-hander missed the last five and a half weeks with a right forearm strain and right wrist tendinitis. He remains a big health risk but obviously needs to be played by fantasy owners while he's on the mound.
Jun 3 - 2:09 PM

Cameron Maybin (groin) is back in the Braves' lineup Wednesday.

Maybin sat out the last two contests with a minor groin injury but is ready to go now. He sports a nice .290/.371/.409 batting line for Atlanta this season.
