Johnny Cueto played catch Monday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list with a strained right lat muscle.

Good news. Reds manager Dusty Baker initially suggested that Cueto may only miss 3-4 starts, but it all depends on how his body responds as he builds up his workload. Tony Cingrani will continue to take his place in the starting rotation for now.

Hanley Ramirez has been diagnosed with a left shoulder sprain.

The Red Sox aren't providing anything more at the moment, but they should have another update on Ramirez's status after Monday's game. Hanley was injured when he crashed into the side wall while trying to chase down a flyball. It seems likely that he'll require a trip to the disabled list, but it's too soon to speculate about the seriousness of the ailment at the moment.

Sean Doolittle (shoulder) will face hitters on May 11.

He'll throw two more bullpen sessions prior to that. Doolittle's recovery from a slight tear in his rotator cuff is coming along nicely and he could conceivably rejoin the Athletics' bullpen later this month. He figures to be eased back into closing duties.
May 4 - 6:34 PM

Mariners placed OF Austin Jackson on the 15-day disabled list with a right ankle sprain.

Jackson suffered the injury when he landed on first base awkwardly during Sunday's game. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined. Justin Ruggiano is in line for a bump in playing time while Jackson is on the shelf.
May 4 - 6:25 PM

Adam Ottavino revealed Monday that he's likely to have Tommy John surgery to repair a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

The warning alarm was sounded when it was reported last Friday that Ottavino was seeking multiple opinions on his elbow, and the reliever's worst fears have come true. It's brutal news for Ottavino, as he had taken over the Rockies' closer role and appeared poised for a breakthrough season. He'll now be sidelined likely until around midseason next year. John Axford has assumed the ninth inning role for the Rox, although it's possible LaTroy Hawkins could eventually get another shot when he returns from a biceps injury.

Alex Cobb (forearm) has been shut down from throwing after experiencing "a little bit of a setback," according to Rays manager Kevin Cash.

Cobb will be examined by the team's doctor, although it's unclear if an MRI is planned. More should be known about how big of a setback this could be after the doctor's visit, but obviously we don't figure to see Cobb for a while now. The right-hander had resumed throwing off a mound a little over a week ago as he worked his way back from right forearm tendinitis.
May 4 - 5:21 PM

Anthony Rendon (knee, side) has flown back to Washington, D.C. to have his injured left side examined.

Rendon has been dealing with an oblique issue for a week now while on a rehab assignment with his knee injury. More should be known shortly about how long this will set him back, but it certainly possible that he won't be returning to the Nationals anytime soon. Rendon had been hoping to be activated by now.
May 4 - 4:50 PM

Twins placed OF Oswaldo Arcia on the 15-day disabled list a with right hip flexor strain.

Arcia suffered the injury during Sunday's game. The Twins are optimistic that he'll make a quick recovery, projecting that he could return when his 15 days are up. Eddie Rosario and Eduardo Escobar figure to be the main beneficiaries of extra playing time while Arcia is on the shelf.
May 4 - 4:23 PM

Jorge Soler is not in the Cubs' starting lineup on Monday night against the Cardinals.

It's a day of mental and physical rest for Soler, who's sporting an underwhelming .269/.337/.409 batting line with 38 strikeouts in 23 games this season. Chris Denorfia is starting in right field and Chris Coghlan is batting second Monday against Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez.
May 4 - 3:29 PM

Padres purchased the contract of C Austin Hedges from Triple-A El Paso.

Hedges carries a tremendous defensive reputation and was off to a promising start offensively this season at Triple-A, but he's a .256/.316/.390 career hitter in the minors. The 22-year-old probably won't carry much fantasy value in his first taste of the major league level. Derek Norris remains the primary backstop in San Diego.
May 4 - 3:25 PM

Jean Segura (head) is out of the Brewers' starting lineup on Monday night versus the Dodgers.

Not a surprise after he took a Pedro Strop fastball off his helmet on Sunday afternoon. Segura passed a CT scan, but he probably won't have a very active week. Hector Gomez is starting at shortstop Monday in what will be Craig Counsell's first game as Milwaukee's manager. Clayton Kershaw is on the bump for the Dodgers.
May 4 - 3:14 PM

Indians manager Terry Francona said Nick Swisher (knees) will be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

Tyler Holt will be optioned to Triple-A Columbus to open a spot on the Indians' 25-man roster. Swisher missed all of April while rehabbing from dual knee surgeries. He batted just .208/.278/.331 with eight home runs and 42 RBI in 97 games last season for the Indians and the 34-year-old seems doubtful to carry significant value this summer in standard fantasy leagues.
