Carlos Ruiz will play Friday and Saturday at Double-A Reading before rejoining the Phillies on Sunday.

Ruiz has spent the first part of the 2013 season serving a 25-game Adderall suspension. He hit .325/.394/.540 with 16 home runs and 68 RBI in 114 games last year and is safe to start right away in fantasy leagues.

Billy Hamilton has been placed under the concussion protocol after being hit in the head with a fly ball on Wednesday.

Hamilton was hit on the left side of the face by an Anthony Rizzo fly ball while attempting to chase it down along with outfielder Adam Duvall. After the ball hit Hamilton, it resulted in an inside-the-park homer. Manager Bryan Price spoke to his current standing in the concussion protocol. "He [has] done some concussion protocol things that haven’t shown anything. It [is] something that has to be followed up on." A trip to the 7-day concussion disabled list is in play at this point.

Adam Duvall his his National League-leading 22nd homer Wednesday against the Cubs.

It was a solo shot against Kyle Hendricks in the fourth inning. Duvall finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with a rare walk. He’s hitting .254 with a .291 on-base percentage, but the power has made him one of the biggest surprises in fantasy leagues during the first half of the season.
Jun 29 - 4:11 PM

Jonathan Papelbon (intercostal) threw 30 pitches in a simulated game on Wednesday.

Things went well, but the plan calls for him to report to Double-A Harrisburg to make back-to-back appearances before being activated. Look for him to return over the weekend. Shawn Kelley will continue to fill in at closer for now.
Jun 29 - 3:51 PM

Mat Latos told Bruce Levine of WSCR-AM that he has signed a minor league deal with the Nationals, pending a physical.

Latos was cut loose by the White Sox earlier this month after posting a 4.62 ERA over 11 starts. The veteran right-hander will serve as rotation depth with his new team.
Jun 29 - 3:49 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers are interested in Rays right-hander Erasmo Ramirez.

The idea would be to use Ramirez as a stopgap option in the starting rotation. Ramirez has pitched almost exclusively in relief with the Rays this season while posting a 3.68 ERA and 38/12 K/BB ratio in 51 1/3 innings, but he has had success as a starter in the past. He just became arbitration-eligible for the first time last winter as a Super Two player, so the Rays would probably seek a nice piece in return in order to get a deal done with Andrew Friedman and company.
Jun 29 - 3:39 PM

Yu Darvish (shoulder) threw three innings in a simulated game Wednesday.

Darvish, who is working his way back from right shoulder discomfort, threw to teammates Jurickson Profar and Ryan Rua. Rangers pitching coach Doug Brocail was encouraged by what he saw, but they'd wait to see how he feels Thursday before deciding on the next step. It's possible he could be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment as early as next Monday or Tuesday.
Jun 29 - 3:33 PM

Carlos Beltran (hamstring) is absent from Wednesday's lineup versus the Rangers.

It's no surprise after Beltran was removed from Tuesday's game with a tight right hamstring. The Yankees are calling him day-to-day after an MRI came back clean, so a weekend return is possible if he shows enough progress. Aaron Hicks is starting in right field Wednesday while Alex Rodriguez serves as the DH.
Jun 29 - 3:26 PM

Hanley Ramirez is considered day-to-day with an injury to his right side.

Ramirez tweaked something on a swing in the sixth inning on Wednesday against the Rays and was eventually pulled from the game. Hopefully it's not an oblique injury, but at least the Red Sox have an off day on Thursday. We should know more on Friday.
Jun 29 - 3:20 PM

Matt Moore fired seven scoreless innings in a 4-0 win over the Red Sox on Wednesday.

It was an impressive start against a good lineup. Moore allowed just three hits, all of them singles in the sixth inning. But he managed to wiggle out of the jam and keep the Red Sox off the board. The southpaw walked a pair and struck out six in the victory and now sits at 4-5 with a 4.67 ERA on the year. He’ll try to keep the momentum going in a start against the Angels next week.
Jun 29 - 3:13 PM

Phillies prospect right-hander Mark Appel had surgery Wednesday to remove a bone spur from his right elbow.

Appel is done for the year, but he's expected to be ready for spring training next year. The 2013 No. 1 overall pick had a 4.46 ERA and 34/20 K/BB ratio in 38 1/3 innings with Triple-A Lehigh Valley before hitting the disabled list with a right shoulder strain in late May. His stock continues to fade.
Jun 29 - 2:11 PM

Royals placed OF Lorenzo Cain on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

Yet another injury for the defending World Series champions. Cain hurt his hamstring while trying to leg out an infield single on Wednesday. The severity of the strain isn't yet clear. Brett Eibner will take his place on the active roster.
