Matt Adams (oblique) will be reevaluated by a team doctor on Thursday's scheduled off day.

Adams hasn't played since Sunday because of right oblique tightness but the Cardinals are optimistic that he will not require a 15-day disabled list stint. The young slugger is batting .542 with a 1.634 OPS, three home runs and eight RBI in eight games played this season. He should play at least one game at first base in the Cardinals' upcoming weekend series against the Pirates.

Adam Frazier went 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run and four RBI in a 6-4 walk-off win over the Brewers on Wednesday.

He smacked a two-run triple that tied the game in the third inning and was subsequently driven in by Starling Marte's single. In the bottom of the ninth he came to the plate against Brewers closer Corey Knebel with a runner aboard and drilled a game-ending bomb to right field. The big game boosted his line to .282/.353/.409 with six homers, 53 RBI and 50 runs in 113 games. He's chipped in nine stolen bases to boot. The super-utility player has filled in all over the field for injured or suspended players and has acquitted himself quite well at the plate. The 25-year-old hit .301 as a rookie last year and might merit a regular starting gig next year.

Aaron Altherr went 3-for-4 with a clutch home run and game-winning base hit as his team beat the Dodgers 7-5 on Wednesday.

He drilled a game-tying, two-run homer off reliever Ross Stripling in the seventh inning, then drove in the winning runs with a single in the bottom of the eighth. The outfielder has missed a couple months' worth of games with hamstring issues this year but has been very good when able to play. He has a .281/.351/.539 triple slash with 19 home runs and 60 RBI in 97 games.
Sep 21 - 1:21 AM

Hunter Renfroe had a three-homer game in a losing cause against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

The Padres got all five of their homers tonight from the three bats they called up on Monday, with Rocky Gale and Christian Villaneuva also joining in the fun. Well, sort of fun, since they did end up losing 13-7. Renfroe has four homers in three games since his recall and 24 in 415 at-bats on the season. He might be leading the team in homers right now if not for the decision to send him down. He's second anyway.
Sep 21 - 1:13 AM

Gio Gonzalez allowed two runs in seven innings to earn a 7-3 win over the Braves on Wednesday.

He punched out eight batters against one walk in yet another gem outing for the veteran hurler. He yielded just three knocks in the contest, although two of them were solo homers by Freddie Freeman and Kurt Suzuki. Gonzalez made an adjustment in the middle of spring training that has propelled him to his best season since 2012, when he went 21-8 with a 2.89 ERA in his first season with the Nationals after coming over from the Athletics. This year Gonzalez is 15-7 with a 2.68 ERA and 1.13 WHIP after 30 starts. He has a 179/71 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 191 2/3 innings.
Sep 21 - 12:27 AM

Blake Snell held the Cubs to two base hits in seven shutout frames to earn an 8-1 victory on Wednesday.

He struck out five batters while allowing just two singles and three walks in the gem outing. Snell has been maddeningly inconsistent this season but today's effort shows why he was so highly rated as a prospect. He improves to 4-6 with a 4.01 ERA and 1.34 WHIP after 22 starts. The 24-year-old has 105 strikeouts and 55 walks in 121 1/3 innings.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said after Wednesday's game that Zach Britton will receive a PRP injection in his knee on Thursday.

The team will then reevaluate Britton 3-to-5 days later. Showalter said earlier in the day on Wednesday that there was a strong chance that the closer will be shut down for the rest of the 2017 campaign. With Baltimore all but eliminated from the playoffs, there's really no reason for Britton to pitch again. Brad Brach figures to handle any save opportunities that might arise the rest of the way.
Sep 20 - 11:25 PM

Mike Moustakas went 3-for-4 and set a new Royals record by hitting his 37th home run of the season in a 15-5 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

His sixth-inning blast off Carlos Ramirez broke the team record set by Steve Balboni way back in 1985. The most homers Moustakas had ever hit in a season before this year was 22 in 2015. The third baseman has a .275 batting average with 83 RBI and 73 runs in 564 plate appearances.
Sep 20 - 11:22 PM

Chris Sale blanked the Orioles for eight innings and reached 300 strikeouts in Boston's 9-0 victory Wednesday.

Sale fanned 13 and allowed just four hits in one of his most dominant outings of the season. It was that last strikeout, of Ryan Flaherty in the eighth, that gave him 300, making him the first AL pitcher to reach that mark since Pedro Martinez in 1999. Martinez is the only other Red Sox pitcher ever to get there. Clayton Kershaw did fan 301 in 2015, but Sale will finish the season with the highest strikeout total of any pitcher since Randy Johnson had 334 in 2002.
Sep 20 - 10:30 PM

Matt Moore threw six scoreless innings against Colorado in a 4-0 win on Wednesday.

Moore has had a very disappointing season for the Giants, but this was a nice reminder that his struggles are not due to a lack of talent. He did allow six hits and two walks, but he struck out six and was able to keep the Rockies off the scoreboard. He'll look to build on this start when he gets the ball against Arizona on Tuesday in what will be the southpaw's last start of 2017.
Sep 20 - 6:43 PM

David Price could pitch in a save situation for the Red Sox on Wednesday night, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell.

Craig Kimbrel and Addison Reed are both unavailable due to their recent usage. Price made his first relief appearance for the Red Sox on Sunday, throwing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Sep 20 - 5:52 PM

Didi Gregorius hit his 25th home run of the season Wednesday in the Yankees' 11-3 rout of the Twins.

It was a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning, capping off a six-run frame for the Bronx Bombers. Gregorius can now claim the highest single-season home run total of any shortstop in Yankees history. Derek Jeter hit 24 back in 1999.
