Jeff Keppinger is out of Friday's lineup due to a lower back issue.

He's being called day-to-day. It's too bad, as Keppinger finally appeared to be coming around with the bat in recent days. Tyler Greene will fill in at second base.

Nick Castellanos had a good night at the plate, hitting a three-run home run and knocking in another run with a single over four at-bats as the Tigers handily defeated the White Sox on Wednesday.

Castellanos hasn't made noise with the bat in a while, as he last homered on June 27. His three-run blast capped off a six-run first inning against White Sox starter Hector Noesi. The 22-year-old rookie third baseman has had a mediocre year offensively, but there's certainly plenty of potential in his bat. He's slashing .267/.312/.409 with seven home runs and 41 RBI.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is hearing the Yankees have talked to the Phillies about Marlon Byrd, but nothing is close at present.

Byrd has been a popular name as the trade deadline approaches, and the Yankees are among the teams that have been linked to the 36-year-old in recent days. Heyman hears the club isn't wild about Byrd's $8 million contract in 2015, though, a possible sticking point for a deal. Byrd is hitting .270/.318/.477 with 20 home runs this season and would no doubt provide a boost to the Bronx Bombers' offense.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports the Marlins and White Sox have discussed a possible trade involving John Danks.

The Marlins are in a difficult position, stuck somewhere between a buyer and a seller. With their recent winning streak, though, it appears they've become buyers. Danks is signed through 2016, so any team taking him on would also have concerns about the $28.5 million he's owed over the duration of his deal.

Giants released 2B Dan Uggla.

Well, that was quick. Uggla played in just four games for the Giants, going hitless in 11 at-bats and committing three errors in the field. The Giants are rumored to be in the market for a second baseman before the trade deadline. Uggla's release emphasizes that idea.

Adam Jones went yard for the 21st time this season and finished 2-for-4 overall on Wednesday as the Orioles edged out the Angels for a win.

Jones belted a two-run home run off of Garrett Richards in the first inning to stake the Orioles to a 2-0 lead. The outfielder went yard last night as well, giving him five long balls in 12 games since returning from the All-Star break. On the season, Jones owns a .294/.321/.498 slash line with 67 RBI and six stolen bases.

Michael Wacha (shoulder) could begin a throwing program next week.

Wacha will undergo an MRI on the shoulder on Monday, and if the results are positive he could begin to throw shortly after. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak likened Wacha's situation to a pitcher starting spring training, so he's likely still roughly a month away from a return. The Cardinals are hoping the 23-year-old can contribute down the stretch in September.

Alex Rios left Wednesday's game after being hit by a pitch in the left quadriceps muscle.

Rios was hit in the third inning, and he was replaced by Dan Robertson in right field to start the fifth inning. Rios was hitless in one at-bat before exiting. The outfielder's name has been prevalent in trade rumors in recent days, so it may have been his last game as a member of the Rangers.

Corey Kluber notched his first career shutout, limiting the Mariners to just three singles over nine innings in a win on Wednesday.

Kluber appeared to have the unfortunate draw of going up against King Felix, but it was the other way around. In his previous start, the talented Indians right-hander allowed only one run to the Royals and followed it up with Wednesday's gem, in which he did not allow a walk and struck out eight. Kluber, now 11-6 with a 2.61 ERA and a 170/33 K/BB ratio, will go for a third consecutive complete game on Monday at home against the Reds.

Brett Lawrie (finger) took batting practice on the field at the Blue Jays' complex in Dunedin, Florida, on Wednesday.

Lawrie also took ground balls during his work on the field, and Jays manager John Gibbons said Lawrie may be ready to begin a rehab assignment by this weekend. It's a nice development for the infielder, who was believed to still be a few weeks away from returning. He could rejoin the club in early August after a short rehab assignment if things continue to progress.

James Paxton (lat) threw a 45-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and is on track to rejoin the Mariners rotation on Saturday.

"I was throwing all my pitches where I wanted to throw them today, my mechanics felt smooth, everything was coming out at the right time. It felt good," Paxton said after the session. The left-hander hasn't pitched since April 8 due to a strained lat. He may have some rust early, but Paxton was pitching well early and could be a valuable contributor for the M's down the stretch.

A source tells Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star that the Royals aren't close to a deal for Emilio Bonifacio.

Bonifacio was on hug watch after his name was absent from a delayed Cubs starting lineup, and the Royals were reported as his expected destination. It still could happen, but right now there doesn't seem to be a ton of fire there. Bonifacio and his .279/.318/.373 line remain likely to be moved before Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline.
