Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said David Freese could receive multiple days off as the club tries to find a way to get him through his slump.

Freese had another hitless performance Monday, dropping his batting line to .163/.255/.204. "We've tried to let him play through it but he's not heading in a good direction," Matheny said. "So, at that point you say take a different perspective and give him a little bit of time to see how he responds. Last year we gave him two or three in a row, and he was able to get some work done and was a different guy." Matt Carpenter should handle third base while Freese sits, though Ty Wigginton could also be worked in.

Japanese right-hander Chihiro Kaneko has been scouted by the Phillies, Red Sox and Padres, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports Japan.

Slated to turn 31 in a couple weeks, Kaneko is eligible to be posted this offseason and is actually visiting the United States during the World Series to get a feel for the atmosphere of Major League Baseball. Kaneko is the ace of Nippon Professional Baseball’s Orix Buffaloes and is coming off a season where he put up a 1.91 ERA and 194/41 K/BB ratio over 184 innings. He holds a 2.69 mark over nine pro seasons and would surely cost a pretty penny if he winds up being posted this winter.

Miguel Cabrera underwent surgery Wednesday to remove bone spurs from his right ankle and repair a stress fracture in the navicular bone at top of his foot.

It had been known that Cabrera dealt with bone spurs down the stretch, but the stress fracture is a new revelation. The slugger will be re-evaluated in three months, so there would seem to be a chance that he'll be slowed at the beginning of spring training. Barring a setback, however, it shouldn't affect his availability for Opening Day.

An MRI on Tim Lincecum's back showed no structural damage.

Lincecum was forced from Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday due to back pain and a precautionary MRI was ordered. He reported improvement Thursday and was able to do some throwing in the outfield at AT&T Park. The right-hander is expected to be available out of the bullpen for Friday's Game 3.

Brandon Moss underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum and also fix an impingement in his right hip.

Moss was bothered by the hip ailment for much of the second half and it showed at the plate, as he hit just .162 with a .575 OPS in 162 plate appearances after August 1. He'll be on crutches for four weeks and is expected to be able to run in 12 weeks. Moss might be eased into things at the beginning of spring training but should be fine by Opening Day.

Phillies re-signed OF Grady Sizemore to a one-year, $2 million contract.

The deal includes performance bonuses. Sizemore, 32, batted .253/.313/.389 with three home runs and 12 RBI over 176 plate appearances after joining the Phillies around midseason and figures to serve as a part-time player in 2015.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Blue Jays have begun contract talks with Melky Cabrera.

Heyman hears Toronto is "willing to offer at least a three-year deal" to the impending free agent outfielder, who batted .301/.351/.458 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI over 139 games this season. If an agreement isn't reached before the deadline for free agent filing, the Jays will make Cabrera a one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer so they can get draft pick compensation if he signs elsewhere. Melky turned 30 years old in August.

According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Mets have "concrete" interest in impending free agent outfielder Michael Cuddyer.

Martino hears from "people familiar with the Mets' thinking" that the team would like to sign Cuddyer to a two-year deal this winter to provide power to their lineup and veteran presence to their clubhouse. The 35-year-old batted .332/.376/.579 in an injury-shortened 2014 for the Rockies. He posted a .919 OPS, 20 home runs, and 84 RBI across 130 games with Colorado in 2013.

Brewers named Darnell Coles as hitting coach.

The club's previous hitting coach, Jerry Narron, was let go at the end of the regular season. Coles, a former major league outfielder who played for eight different teams, served as the Tigers' assistant hitting coach in 2013. He'll work under Brewers manager Ron Roenicke, who was retained despite the team's late-season collapse.

The Rockies have fired pitching coach Jim Wright.

Assistant pitching coach Bo McLaughlin has also been let go. Colorado posted a league-worst 4.84 staff ERA in 2014, and these two will serve as the scapegoats. Wright was the Rockies' pitching coach for three years. He had spent 18 years in the organization.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that John Hart will be named the Braves' president of baseball operations.

Hart had been serving as the Braves' interim general manager since the September 22 firing of Frank Wren and will now take a permanent role in Atlanta's front office. Hart is the former general manager of the Indians and Rangers. He also served as an in-studio analyst for a couple of years on MLB Network. The Braves still need to name a new GM, and that person will work directly under Hart.

According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the Blue Jays have received calls about Adam Lind.

"I hear the Blue Jays are getting a lot of interest on Lind and not just from American League teams," an unnamed executive told the Sun. "I’ve heard three or four clubs." Lind struggles mightily against left-handed pitching, but he mashes righties and is only due $7.5 million in 2015 and $8 million in 2016 (via a pair of club options). That relatively low price tag makes him an attractive trade target for teams that want to upgrade offensively but won't be able to compete for the bigger bats on the open market this winter.
