Tony Abreu (quad) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Fresno.

Abreu began the season on the disabled list with a strained quad. The 28-year-old could serve as a utility infielder with the big club once he's back to full health.

Jameson Taillon (cancer) struck out six batters over three scoreless innings Sunday in his first rehab start with Double-A Altoona.

Taillon underwent surgery earlier this month to treat testicular cancer, but he was able to quickly return to game action. He was very sharp in his first rehab start, allowing just one hit and one walk while throwing 29 out of 47 pitches for strikes. Taillon should be ready to rejoin the Pirates' soon, but manager Clint Hurdle doesn't want to rush him. "We don't have expectations, and we want to take it slow with him so he doesn't feel any unneeded urgency," said Hurdle. "He needs to get right when he's right ... this is uncharted territory."

Steven Matz (elbow) spun five perfect innings Sunday in his latest rehab start with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Matz fanned eight and walked none while throwing 50 out of 73 pitches for strikes. It was a very encouraging performance as he works his way back from a flexor strain which has kept him sidelined all season. The southpaw could be cleared to join the Mets' rotation as soon as this weekend against the Pirates at home.

Lucas Duda launched his seventh home run of the season on Sunday as the Mets trounced the Pirates 7-2 in Pittsburgh.

It was his lone hit in five at-bats on the night, but he certainly was able to make it count with a solo shot in the seventh inning that increased the Mets' advantage to 7-1. He's quietly having a nice season in the middle of the Mets' lineup, slashing .264/.396/.592 with seven homers and 16 RBI in 28 games.

Twins optioned 1B/DH Kennys Vargas to Triple-A Rochester.

After going hitless in eight plate appearances on Sunday (including four strikeouts), Vargas gets the boot. He was hitting .258/.280/.483 with five homers and 19 RBI in 24 games with the Twins.
May 28 - 10:47 PM

Joe Mauer went 4-for-5 with a solo home run, an RBI double and three walks in Sunday's 15-inning, 8-6 loss to the Rays.

Beautiful game for Mauer, though the Twins were unable to put it into the win column. Mauer's fine afternoon started with an RBI double off Alex Cobb in the third inning and he later socked a solo opposite-field homer in the seventh. That one tied the game up at 3-3, but the game would see a number of back-and-forths afterward before the Rays finally came out on top via solo homers by Evan Longoria and Logan Morrison in the top of the 15th inning. Overall, Mauer is hitting .283/.363/.408 with three homers and 18 RBI across 152 at-bats.
May 28 - 8:43 PM

Clayton Kershaw did not pitch deep enough to qualify for a decision in Sunday's 9-4 win over the Cubs, surrendering four runs on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Kershaw struck out six and walked two on the afternoon. Willson Contreras knocked him for a solo home run in the first inning, with Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo following suit in the fourth inning. Rizzo's was a two-run shot. This start marked a number of worsts for Kershaw this season, including shortest outing and most hits allowed. The four runs surrendered tied the most he has given up in a start. The ace southpaw will look to move past this when he carries his 2.37 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 78/10 K/BB ratio (76 1/3 innings) into a road start against the Brewers next time he toes the rubber.
May 28 - 7:42 PM

Jon Lester struggled in Sunday's 9-4 loss to the Dodgers, yielding six runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings.

A pair of three-run home runs proved to be the culprit in this disappointing outing, as Cody Bellinger took Lester deep for a three-run shot in the second inning and Kike Hernandez did likewise in the third. He had been pitching to a brilliant 0.86 ERA in his previous three outings before the Dodgers mucked that up on Sunday. The veteran southpaw will try for cleaner results when he carries his 3.86 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 67/23 K/BB ratio (11 starts) into a road showdown with the rival Cardinals next time out.
May 28 - 7:40 PM

Domingo Santana went 2-for-4 with a grand slam on Sunday, powering the Brewers to a 9-5 victory over the Diamondbacks.

His game-changing blow came off of Patrick Corbin in the fourth inning. He also doubled and walked in the contest and scored three runs. He looks to be coming into his own this season, slashing .270/.371/.461 with seven homers, 27 RBI and four stolen bases.
May 28 - 7:11 PM

Jimmy Nelson was dominant in Sunday's victory over the Diamondbacks, striking out 10 over seven innings of one-run ball.

Nelson scattered seven hits on the afternoon and didn't walk a batter. The only damage against him came on an RBI double by Chris Iannetta in the fourth inning. Now 3-3 on the season, Nelson will carry a 3.85 ERA and 1.35 WHIP into Friday's start against the Dodgers. While inconsistent, he has shown flashes of brilliance this season and is worth a look as a matchup play or streaming option in mixed leagues.
May 28 - 6:32 PM

Gerardo Parra went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and three runs scored in Sunday's 8-4 win over the Cardinals.

Parra notched a three-run homer off Lance Lynn in the fourth inning to jump the Rockies out to a 4-0 lead. They would go on to win by a final score of 8-4. With this big performance under his belt, he now owns a .279/.301/.442 triple-slash with six homers and 23 RBI in 42 games played. Parra has not hit double-digit home runs since the 2013 season, but looks like he could be on that track this year.
May 28 - 6:27 PM

Mike Trout will undergo an MRI on Monday on his injured left thumb.

He was diagnosed with a left thumb sprain on Sunday, but the Angels want the additional exam to help determine the severity. No decision will be made on a potential trip to the disabled list until after they get the results of that exam.
