Jordy Mercer blasted a two-run homer on Friday, powering the Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Nationals.

Mercer, who was recalled earlier in the day when Neil Walker hit the disabled list, certainly made a strong first impression. His fifth inning blast off Ross Detwiler dropped just over the wall in left field and out of the reach of the outstretched glove of Bryce Harper. It was his only hit in four trips to the plate on the evening, but was the difference maker in the ballgame. He may continue to get looks at second base while Walker is sidelined, but don't look for much fantasy value.

Johnny Cueto (blisters) has resumed playing light catch.

Cueto is a little over a week removed from being placed on the disabled list due to multiple blisters on his pitching hand. He's doing much better now and it sounds like he should be able to rejoin the Giants' rotation in relatively short order.

Mark Melancon (elbow) threw another bullpen session Sunday.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy was encouraged by how the reliever looked and felt and is hoping Melancon can return in the next couple weeks. The skipper admitted that they've been slow-playing the closer's return because of where they are in the standings. Sam Dyson has been handling the ninth inning in Melancon's absence and has done a nice job.

Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Sunday that the club has no intention of trading Giancarlo Stanton, Justin Bour, Christian Yelich, J.T. Realmuto, Marcell Ozuna or Dan Straily before the deadline.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald writes that the club prefers "to leave those decisions to the team’s next owner." The Marlins have already dealt David Phelps and are likely to trade A.J. Ramos soon, but it appears a decision on whether they deal players under control for multiple seasons won't be made at least until the offseason. It makes sense not only to wait for ownership in place to make these calls, but also because over the winter there would figure to be more bidders involved.

Justin Turner (illness) is back in the Dodgers' lineup Sunday.

Turner is dealing with bronchitis, but he's feeling well enough Sunday after missing Saturday's game. He's at third base and batting third versus Sean Newcomb and the Braves.
Jul 23 - 1:53 PM

J.D. Martinez (hand) remained out of the Diamondbacks' lineup Sunday.

He hasn't played since being hit on the left hand by a pitch in his first game with the D'Backs last Wednesday. The good news is Martinez was slated to take batting practice Sunday and is "trending upward," according to manager Torey Lovullo. It sounds like he should be back in there soon. Daniel Descalso is getting another start.
Jul 23 - 1:30 PM

Brandon Phillips (hamstring) is back in the Braves' lineup Sunday.

It's his first start since he tweaked his hamstring last Thursday. Phillips is at second base and batting second against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. The Braves also have Johan Camargo at shortstop over Dansby Swanson, Matt Adams at first base and Freddie Freeman at third.
Jul 23 - 1:28 PM

Troy Tulowitzki (groin) is expected to return to the Blue Jays' lineup Monday.

Tulo is missing a second straight start Sunday because of a sore groin, but it's not viewed as a major concern. Ryan Goins is getting another start at shortstop Sunday.

J.T. Realmuto went 3-for-4 and swatted a pair of two-run home runs to lead his team to a 5-4 win over the Reds on Saturday.

He pulverized rookie starter Robert Stephenson in the second inning and again in the sixth. Justin Bour was aboard both times. Realmuto now has a .305 batting average with 10 home runs and 39 RBI for the season. He's even chipped in five stolen bases for good measure. There are not many fantasy catchers who can consistently contribute that level of goodness. He is already just one longball away from matching the career high he set last year.
Jul 23 - 1:48 AM

Marwin Gonzalez blasted a pinch-hit, three-run bomb in an 8-4 win over the Orioles on Saturday.

He came in to replace Colin Moran in the middle of an at-bat after the young third baseman took a foul ball to the eye and had to be carted off the field in the sixth inning. Gonzalez promptly launched a three-run tater to put his club in the lead to stay. He added a double in his second at-bat. The veteran infielder has been one of the biggest surprises in the game this year. He offers multi-position eligibility in fantasy leagues and is slashing .316/.394/.593 with 18 homers and 58 RBI in 79 games.

Mike Moustakas hit a pair of solo home runs, two of four Royals homers on the night, in a 7-2 win over the White Sox on Saturday.

Moustakas did his work against the Sox bullpen, victimizing David Holmberg and Brad Goldberg for the solo blasts in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively. Don't look now, but the 28-year-old is second in the American League with his 28 homers, and his 62 RBI also rank among the league's best. That's very good news for the impending free agent, who is setting himself up to get paid handsomely this winter.
Jul 23 - 12:56 AM

Wilmer Flores hit a walk-off, solo home run in the ninth inning Saturday to complete the Mets' comeback in a 6-5 win over the Athletics.

The Mets once trailed 5-0 in the game, but they battled against A's starter Sean Manaea to close the gap and got to the Athletics' bullpen late. That included Flores, who deposited a Simon Castro fastball into the left field seats to send the fans home happy. Flores finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in the game. The 25-year-old infielder doesn't have a permanent home but has been serviceable when called upon, batting .284/.312/.473 in 222 at-bats this year.
