Orioles purchased the contract of RHP Freddy Garcia from Triple-A Norfolk.

Garcia will start Saturday's game against the Angels. He posted a 2.67 ERA in five starts at the Triple-A level and should continue to be ignored outside of AL-only formats.

Pedro Alvarez plated the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to down the Yankees 1-0 on Thursday.

Alvarez went hitless in three at-bats but was able to lift a fly ball deep enough to score Nolan Reimold and give the O's a victory. He has just one homer and four RBI in 19 games thus far with his new club, batting a paltry .196/.303/.321.
May 5 - 10:47 PM

Kevin Gausman scattered three hits over eight scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on Thursday.

Gausman and Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka went pitch for pitch through eight innings, with neither factoring in the decision. He struck out four without walking a batter, needing just 97 pitches in the efficient outing. It was easily the best of his three starts thus far, but Gausman has largely been good since making his debut on April 25. He'll take a 1.42 ERA and 0.68 WHIP into Tuesday's start at the Twins.
May 5 - 10:23 PM

Edwin Encarnacion homered and had six RBI as the Blue Jays thumped the Rangers 12-2 on Thursday.

E5 finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base. He did most of his damage on two swings, clearing the bases with a double in the first inning before launching a three-run homer in the third. He's started to come on in recent days, homering in two straight. He's certainly capable of going on a tear for weeks at a time. Perhaps this is the start to a memorable May for the 33-year-old.
May 5 - 10:15 PM

Jung Ho Kang (knee) could be activated from the disabled list on Friday.

The Pirates have already cleared a spot for him by optioning Jason Rogers to Triple-A Indianapolis. Kang struggled during his rehab assignment, hitting just .150 over 40 at-bats. The Pirates plan on easing him into action with David Freese still making occasional starts at third base. Kang hasn't played for the Pirates since injuring his knee on a hard slide by Chris Coghlan back on September 17.
May 5 - 9:11 PM

Hunter Pence is dealing with back tightness.

That would explain his absence from Thursday's starting lineup. He's hoping to return on Friday. Pence has gotten off to a strong start, hitting .279 with five homers and 23 RBI through 29 games.
May 5 - 8:43 PM

The Twins have placed left-hander Tommy Milone on waivers, per Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press.

Casey Fien was also waived. Milone was demoted to the bullpen last week after going winless in his first four starts with a 5.79 ERA. His lone relief outing went just as poorly as Milone scattered two hits and three runs in just 3 1/3 innings Tuesday in a loss to Houston. The 29-year-old can't reject a minor league assignment if he clears waivers.
May 5 - 8:31 PM

Garrett Richards (fatigue) has been scratched from Friday's start against the Rays.

Richards has been battling fatigue and dehydration all week. He was always a long shot to pitch on Friday. Cory Rasmus will start in what should be a bullpen game for the Angels. Richards is day-to-day.
May 5 - 7:34 PM

The Nationals are expected to activate Ben Revere (oblique) on Friday.

Revere could have played Thursday but manager Dusty Baker didn't want to risk it in the cold weather. He'll take batting practice and go through a normal pregame routine. Michael Taylor and Jayson Werth both stand to lose playing time with Revere healthy again.
May 5 - 6:45 PM

Fox Sports' Jon Morosi expects the Cardinals to "find creative ways" to keep Aledmys Diaz in the lineup when Jhonny Peralta returns from his thumb injury.

Peralta should return early next month. Diaz has gotten off to an impossibly hot start, hitting .381 with a .679 slugging percentage through 26 games. Peralta was no slouch last year either, batting .275 with 17 HR and 71 RBI. Morosi said the Cardinals are open to using Peralta at both third and first base, which would allow Diaz to stay put at shortstop. Diaz is able to play any infield position, so manager Mike Matheny shouldn't have to rack his brain too hard to have both players in the lineup most days.
May 5 - 6:33 PM

Jason Heyward (wrist) expects to play Friday against the Nationals.

Wrist discomfort has kept Heyward out of the lineup since Sunday. He's expected to partake in Thursday's batting practice and see how he feels afterwards. Heyward has gotten off to a slow start (.211, 0 HR, 13 RBI) but he did the same thing last season before setting career-highs in both batting average (.293) and steals (23).
May 5 - 5:26 PM

Avisail Garcia (hamstring) is back in the White Sox's lineup for Thursday's game against the Red Sox.

He missed four games with a strained hamstring. Garcia will bat seventh and serve as the DH. Jerry Sands, who filled in during Garcia's short absence, will return to the bench. Garcia is only hitting .214 this year with a disappointing .291 on base percentage.
