Frank Francisco (elbow) threw a scoreless inning of relief on Sunday afternoon with High-A St. Lucie.

Francisco struck out two batters in what was his third rehab appearance. Adam Rubin of ESPN New York says the veteran right-hander was hitting 93-94 mph with his fastball, which is pretty good. If all continues to go well Francisco could be back in a couple weeks, but Bobby Parnell will remain the Mets' ninth-inning man.

Phillies activated C Carlos Ruiz from the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Ruiz wasn't supposed to be back until Friday, but the Phils decided to make the move a couple days early. The veteran backstop was been out since late June with post-concussion symptoms, but he got through five rehab games with no issues and is ready to go.

Nationals placed 3B Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

The Nationals are still awaiting MRI results before they determine how long the third baseman will be sidelined, but it's worth noting that Zimmerman admitting to feeling worse Wednesday than when he suffered the injury Tuesday. He could be looking at an extended stay on the DL. Anthony Rendon will handle third base and Danny Espinosa will be at second while Zimmerman is on the shelf. Zach Walters has replaced Zimmerman on the roster.

Padres purchased the contract of OF Jeff Francoeur from Triple-A El Paso.

Francoeur has batted .294 with 15 homers and a .790 OPS at El Paso this season and has also done some pitching, posting a 4.26 ERA and 4/3 K/BB ratio over 6 1/3 relief innings. It would be fun to see him get some work on the mound with San Diego, but most -- if not all -- of Frenchy's playing time figures to come as an outfielder. He can be ignored in fantasy leagues. The Padres have yet to announce a corresponding move.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Twins are "open to trading" Kendrys Morales.

Well, of course they are. Morales is under contract only for this season and the Twins are well out of the playoff picture, so it makes all the sense in the world to get something for Morales now if they can. While the designated hitter is sporting a lowly .599 OPS, he's picked it up of late with a 12-game hitting streak. The Mariners, Brewers, Yankees and Royals were among the teams pursuing Morales before the Twins signed him, but it's not which if any of those clubs could still have interest in the 31-year-old.

Dayan Viciedo was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to tightness in his left lower hamstring.

It's not clear when Viciedo suffered the injury, nor is it known how long he might be sidelined. The White Sox should have an update on the outfield's status later Wednesday. Moises Sierra is covering fro Viciedo in right field.

ESPN's Buster Olney was told by rival evaluators that the July 31 trade deadline doesn't apply to Cliff Lee because he'll clear waivers and can be dealt in August.

It makes sense, as Olney notes that Lee is making $25 million this season, is owed $25 million in 2015 and has a $12.5 million buyout on his $27.5 million club option for 2016. All told, he's guaranteed at least $48 million over the next 1 1/3 seasons, which will scare most every team off. Because he can be dealt in August, Lee will have more time to show he's healthy after missing two months due to a flexor strain in his left elbow.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Blue Jays think Edwin Encarnacion (quad) could be activated from the disabled list next week.

Encarnacion resumed taking batting practice and fielding ground balls this week and evidently did it with no complications. The slugger has been on the shelf since early July with a strained right quad but is poised to rejoin the Blue Jays' lineup soon as the club continues a playoff push.

Eric Hosmer is back in the Royals' lineup Wednesday.

Manager Ned Yost had indicated a desire to sit Hosmer until at least Thursday, but the first baseman has evidently talked his way back into the lineup a day early. Hosmer missed two games due to a bruised right hand, an ailment that was a result of a hit by pitch Sunday.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports that the Marlins "remain interested" in Jim Johnson.

The Marlins nearly completed a deal for Johnson last month before opting for Bryan Morris instead. However, it appears they haven't given up on acquiring the struggling former closer, with Spencer saying the club has discussed sending pitching prospect Adam Conley to Oakland for the reliever. Johnson holds a 6.25 ERA with 23 walks in 40 innings this season and is making $10 million. The A's will have to pick up the bulk of the remainder of his contract in any trade.

Scott Kazmir went seven innings in Tuesday's 3-2 loss against the Astros, giving up seven hits, striking out six and walking one.

Kazmir had long since hit the showers when Houston pulled out the win in the 12th, but he put in another sterling effort while he was on the mound. Chris Carter served as Kazmir's nemesis, knocking in both of the runs on Kazmir's line (one was unearned) via a third inning two-run single. While he didn't pick up his fourteenth win on Tuesday, Kazmir is still holding batters to a fantastic .210 BAA to go with a 2.32 ERA. He's allowed only 94 hits in 122 innings pitched. He'll look for a win against the Rangers next time out.

Mike Trout went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Orioles.

Trout's two-run blast accounted for the only runs the Angels were able to manage against Miguel Gonzalez. Prior to the homer, their only hits were a pair of Efren Navarro singles. The home run was Trout's 24th and put him up to 76 RBI. Even in tough losses like Tuesday's, Trout continues his march toward the AL MVP. He's slashing .309/.395/.610 to this point.
