Dayan Viciedo (oblique) is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment Monday at Triple-A Charlotte.

Viciedo has been sidelined since April 18 with a left oblique strain. He will play two or three games at the Triple-A level before returning to the White Sox roster.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal confirms the Giants are close to an agreement with Mark Melancon.

Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports Radio AM 1340 was the first on this report. Melancon fits the Giants' obvious need for a closer and this deal -- if finalized -- should jumpstart the bidding for fellow elite relievers Kenley Jansen and Aroldis Chapman. Melancon, 31, had a brilliant 1.64 ERA, 0.897 WHIP, and 65/12 K/BB ratio in 71 1/3 innings this summer between the Pirates and Nationals.

MASN's Roch Kubatko reports that the Orioles are showing interest in free agent Michael Saunders.

He fits the Orioles' desire for a right fielder who bats left-handed. Injuries have been a constant drain for Saunders throughout his career and he fell apart down the stretch with Toronto in 2016, though the 30-year-old still managed a decent 253/.338/.478 overall batting line with 24 home runs in 140 games.

Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Pirates officials are planning to meet with the representatives for Derek Holland during the Winter Meetings.

Pittsburgh has been a reported suitor for Holland since mid-November, and it sounds like the two parties are ready to get serious about contract negotiations. There are few better places for a pitcher to try to revitalize his career, so the interest is likely mutual. Holland posted a rough 4.95 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across 107 1/3 innings with the Rangers in 2016, prompting Texas to decline his $11 million option for 2017.

Andrew McCutchen is drawing trade interest from the Dodgers, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

A number of other MLB teams are checking in, namely the Nationals. McCutchen was a disappointment for the Pirates in 2016, slashing .256/.336/.430 with 24 home runs and six stolen bases, but he's a pretty good bounceback candidate for 2017. At least from an offensive standpoint. The 30-year-old center fielder has always been overrated as a defender.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports hears Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria "loves" Aroldis Chapman.

Spending something close to $100 million on a closer doesn't seem like a wise move for a team with many other needs, but Loria hasn't always pushed wise moves. Chapman may be waiting for Kenley Jansen and Mark Melancon to sign first, which would set the market for the elite closer options. Chapman, 28, put up a 1.55 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 90/18 K/BB ratio in 58 innings this summer between the Yankees and Cubs.

According to Jim Bowden of ESPN, the teams currently in on free agent Kenley Jansen are the Nationals, Marlins, Yankees, Giants, Cubs, and Dodgers.

It's going to be a big-time bidding war that could last well into the offseason. Jansen, thought to be seeking close to $100 million, registered a stellar 1.83 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and 104/11 K/BB ratio in 68 2/3 innings this past year for the Dodgers. Aroldis Chapman and Mark Melancon are also out there in free agency as elite-level closer options. When one domino falls, the others will soon.

Blue Jays signed INF/OF Steve Pearce to a two-year, $12.5 million contract.

Pearce gets a nice payday after slashing .288/.374/.492 in 302 plate appearances this summer between the Rays and Orioles, while appearing defensively at first base, second base, third base, and both corner outfield spots. He carries durability issues and will turn 34 years old next April, but the guy has always mashed left-handed pitching when healthy and he brings a good amount of offensive and defensive versatility to Toronto's roster.
Dec 5 - 10:38 AM

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Indians have "checked in on" free agent Edwin Encarnacion.

It's a perfect fit for what the Indians need -- a power-hitting righty in a lefty-heavy lineup -- but Cleveland is not typically in the running for big-time free agents because of budgetary constraints. So the price may have to fall some from where it is now. Jim Bowden of ESPN calls the Rangers "the team to watch" on Encarnacion. Toronto's recent signing of Steve Pearce (and Kendrys Morales earlier) signals the end of a possible reunion there.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the "perception of outside executives" is that the Astros and Nationals are trying hardest on a Chris Sale trade.

Those execs place the Braves as the next-likeliest suitor. Getting the White Sox to trade Sale is going to take a bevy of young talent, but all three of these organizations are rich in that department. Sale, 27, posted a 3.34 ERA, 1.037 WHIP, and 233/45 K/BB ratio across 226 2/3 innings this past season for the Southsiders. He's on a team-friendly contract that carries options through 2019.
Dec 5 - 10:13 AM

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch hears the Cardinals "have kept tabs on possible trade options" such as Lorenzo Cain of the Royals.

Cain is due to become a free agent after the 2017 season and the Royals probably aren't going to be able to afford to sign him to a long-term extension, so a trade this winter does seem possible. Goold also hears the Cardinals are eyeing Adam Eaton of the White Sox. On the free agent side, St. Louis has been connected strongly to Dexter Fowler.

Police officials in Seoul, South Korea confirmed to YonHap News that Jung Ho Kang's recent DUI arrest was his third since 2009.

Which means he will be charged under the capital city's "three strikes law" and have his license revoked. Kang also fled the scene after this latest incident and tried to claim a friend was driving, but authorities analyzed the black box inside the vehicle and determined that to be a lie. Kang is obviously in very serious trouble, both in his native country and with the Pirates. Club president Frank Coonelly released a stern message last Thursday condemning the player's actions.
