Indians placed RHP Vinnie Pestano on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 1, with right elbow tendinitis.

The word on Sunday is that Pestano would likely be available to pitch Monday, but obviously the Indians have decided to play it safe. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined. Joe Smith and Bryan Shaw will now be Cleveland's primary right-handed setup men ahead of closer Chris Perez.

Drew Smyly (shoulder) has been cleared to throw live batting practice this Wednesday.

If that workout goes well, he'll face live hitters again on Saturday. And the next step would be a minor league rehab start. Smyly had to be shut down in early March with shoulder discomfort, but he is on track to join the Rays' starting rotation in mid-April. The 25-year-old left-hander posted a 1.70 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and 44/11 K/BB ratio in 47 2/3 innings last season for the Rays.

Red Sox acquired C Sandy Leon from the Nationals.

Leon was out of options and doubtful to make the Nationals' Opening Day roster. A much better opportunity awaits him in Boston, where he will serve as the backup to starting Red Sox catcher Ryan Hanigan. Christian Vazquez may be facing elbow surgery.

Kendall Graveman was outstanding in Sunday's Cactus League victory over the Brewers, hurling 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball.

The 24-year-old allowed just three hits on the afternoon while punching out three. He has had an unbelievable spring, registering a 0.42 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings. While nothing has been made official, he's considered a favorite to land one of the final spots in the Athletics' Opening Day rotation and a very intriguing target in the late rounds of mixed league drafts.

Rays manager Kevin Cash admitted Sunday that Brad Boxberger is expected to be the Rays primary fill-in at closer while Jake McGee is sidelined.

Cash elaborated, "With some other guys, but for what Box did last year and the confidence we have in him, I would definitely anticipate him pitching in those leverage situations." While it's unclear if he has any chance of holding the job once McGee is up and running, Boxberger should have plenty of mixed league value for the first month-plus of the season.

Brewers released RHP Chris Perez.

The former closer was in camp as a non-roster invitee and attempting to earn a spot in the team's bullpen. With the team granting his unconditional release with a week remaining in camp, it gives Perez an opportunity to find a bullpen job elsewhere.
Mar 29 - 8:17 PM

Red Sox manager John Farrell confirmed Sunday that Edward Mujica would begin the season as his team's closer with Koji Uehara sidelined.

Uehara is battling a hamstring injury and isn't likely to be ready for Opening Day. While Mujica had a disappointing season with the Red Sox in 2014, he excelled while filling in for Uehara down the stretch, posting a 2.12 ERA and 14/5 K/BB ratio while making good on all six of his save chances over his final 17 appearances. As long as he has the job to begin the season, he's worthy of starting in all mixed leagues.

David Robertson (forearm) felt good after his scoreless inning of work in Sunday's Cactus League contest.

Robertson got three ground ball outs and allowed a double in his inning of work. After the White Sox closer indicated he was "feeling better than I did earlier in camp. Just needed some time to get the soreness out." It looks as though he should be ready to go for Opening Day and can safely be selected among the second tier of closers in fantasy drafts.

Casey Janssen is set to undergo an MRI exam on his ailing shoulder.

Janssen reported soreness in his shoulder and had difficulty getting loose before his last outing. The Nationals should have an update on his status after the exam, though he appears likely to begin the season on the disabled list.

Devin Mesoraco left Sunday's game against the Angels with a cramp in his left quad.

Mesoraco pulled up while rounding third base on a double by teammate Brennan Boesch. It doesn't sound like the injury is serious, but should sideline the young backstop for a couple of days. If it's indeed just a cramp, it's possible he'll be OK for Opening Day.
Mar 29 - 4:15 PM

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Sunday that Odubel Herrera will probably be the team's Opening Day center fielder.

The club has decided to move Ben Revere to left field and install the Rule 5 pick in center. Herrera batted .321/.373/.402 between High- and Double-A last season and is hitting .321 with six steals during Grapefruit League play. He's just 23 and has yet to play above Double-A, but Herrera's speed gives him a chance to make an impact in fantasy leagues right away.
Mar 29 - 4:03 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox will consider carrying Blake Swihart on the Opening Day roster if Christian Vazquez (elbow) needs Tommy John surgery.

It had been reported previously that Swihart was under consideration for a roster spot, but Heyman is the first to reveal that Vazquez might need Tommy John surgery. The longer Vazquez would be out, the better you'd have to think the chances are of Swihart cracking the roster. Vazquez is being examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday to see if he needs season-ending surgery. Swihart hit .293 with 13 home runs and 64 RBI between Double- and Triple-A last season. He'd figure to split playing time with Ryan Hanigan if on the roster.
