Travis Wood held the Cardinals to one run over 6 2/3 innings Tuesday as the Cubs grabbed a 2-1 victory.

Yet another fine outing for the 26-year-old lefty, who now owns a 2.33 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 34 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings this season. Wood fanned eight Cardinals batters, allowing only five hits and two walks. The only real damage came on a solo blast from Allen Craig in the top of the second inning. Wood will try to keep it rolling next week against the Rockies.

Matt Carpenter hit a three-run homer and collected four RBI in all as the Cardinals came back to defeat the Cubs 7-4 on Tuesday.

The Cardinals trailed 4-1 when Carpenter stepped to the dish with two runners on in the fifth inning, but he pulled an inside pitch into the right field bleachers for his fifth homer of the year. Carpenter later added an RBI sacrifice fly. The superlatives have all been used to describe Carpenter's 2015 season to date, as he's now hitting .346/.412/.644 with 20 RBI and 23 runs scored to go with his five dingers.

Carlos Perez made his major league debut on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a walk-off solo home run to help the Angels outlast the Mariners.

Perez became the first player to hit a walk-off home run in his major league debut since Miguel Cabrera accomplished the feat for the Marlins on June 20, 2003. Perez had been tearing it up at Triple-A Salt Lake prior to his promotion on Monday, batting .361/.418/.556. With the Angels really hurting for production out of the catching position, it wouldn't be shocking to see them ride him while he's hot.
May 6 - 12:55 AM

Justin Turner finished 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the Dodgers' 8-2 win over the Brewers on Tuesday.

Turner had a couple singles to go along with a three-run homer in the win. The dinger was his fourth of the year, and all four have come in his last six games. Finding playing time has been difficult on a loaded Dodgers club, but Turner has batted .333/.375/.689 in 45 at-bats thus far.

Ryan Vogelsong delivered seven scoreless innings to earn a win versus the Padres on Tuesday.

Vogelsong had not performed well in two relief appearances and three starts coming into Tuesday's outing, but he managed to shut down the Padres, claiming ownership of baseball's best offense. The right-hander held them to three hits (all singles) and two walks while striking out four. The sterling performance lowers his ERA to 6.84 and his WHIP to 1.67 with a 21/13 K/BB ratio in 26 1/3 innings. Vogelsong will look for a repeat performance in a home start against the Marlins next.
May 6 - 12:42 AM

Jesse Chavez kept the Twins largely under wraps Tuesday, allowing only an unearned run over 7 1/3 innings in the Athletics' 2-1 victory.

Chavez gave the Twins nothing all night, surrendering only four singles and one walk in the outing. He struck out seven on the evening. Things got a little dicey -- an error led to a run and Tyler Clippard had to work out of a jam in the eighth inning to retain the lead -- but the A's held on to give Chavez his first win. He'll try to keep his strong start to the season going Sunday at the Mariners.
May 6 - 12:14 AM

Jeff Samardzija was shaky early but recovered to go seven innings, limiting the Tigers to two runs in the White Sox' 5-2 victory Tuesday.

Samardzija appeared to be heading down a familiar road after allowing runs in the first and second innings, but he settled in to hold the Tigers off the board over the ensuing five innings. Samardzija gave up seven hits and a walk while striking out seven in the win. It hasn't come easy for the right-hander this year, but he's now 2-2 with a more respectable 4.38 ERA. An interleague date with the Reds on Sunday is on tap.
May 5 - 11:39 PM

Wandy Rodriguez tossed eight strong innings, striking out eight while allowing one run, in the Rangers' 7-1 win over the Astros on Tuesday.

Wandy gave up just three hits on the night, with one of those being a Luis Valbuena solo homer. The southpaw also struck out eight while walking just one. It was easily the best of his three starts thus far and showed that he's still got a little bit left in the tank after the Rangers picked him up off the scrap heap. Rodriguez will square off with the Rays in Tampa on Sunday.

George Springer crashed into the wall making a catch on Tuesday and will be evaluated for a concussion.

The Astros aren't taking chances with their young star, who hit the wall with his head while making a spectacular grab Tuesday night against the Rangers. Houston manager A.J. Hinch said after the game that Springer was "pretty banged up." He'll undergo a battery of tests and will sit on Wednesday, with his status reevaluated once the Astros have a better gauge of the severity of the injury.
May 5 - 11:19 PM

Stephen Strasburg will see a chiropractor on Wednesday for an alignment issue with his shoulder.

From the sound of it, this isn't an arm injury. According to manager Matt Williams, Strasburg is feeling discomfort under his shoulder. He labored through three innings against the Marlins on Tuesday and at one point was visited by a trainer. He'll visit the chiropractor to see if the issue can be worked out. It's unknown as of now if he'll make his next start.
May 5 - 11:04 PM

Eric Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the Royals' 5-3 win over the Indians on Tuesday.

Hosmer blasted a three-run homer in the first inning, his fourth homer of the year, before adding an RBI triple in the eighth. Hosmer's 19 RBI ranks him among the league leaders in the category, and he's hitting .320/.400/.540 overall.
May 5 - 10:54 PM

Michael Pineda was dominant in a win against the Blue Jays on Tuesday, tossing eight shutout innings.

On 101 pitches, Pineda scattered five hits and a walk while striking out six batters. Three of the hits were doubles, but all came with two outs and Pineda easily saw his way out of danger. The right-hander now has a 2.97 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, and a stellar 38/3 K/BB ratio in 39 1/3 innings. Pineda's next opponent, the Orioles, will be loath to face him in a matinee in the Bronx.
