And his sixth-inning two-run homer off of Erasmo Ramirez was the icing on the cake. Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan reports that the Braves have offered John Hart their full-time general manager position.

He was elevated from senior adviser to interim GM on Monday when the team fired Frank Wren. Hart, of course, has tons of past GM experience between the Indians and Rangers. According to Passan, the 66-year-old has told the Braves he "he needed to give it serious thought." Passan adds that Hart would likely groom 35-year-old assistant GM John Coppolella to eventually take over.

Henderson Alvarez was terrific on Tuesday, tossing 7 2/3 shutout innings as the Marlins edged out the Phillies.

Opposing starter Cole Hamels, of all people, was the only Phillie to register an extra-base hit (a double) against Alvarez. Overall, the right-hander yielded five hits and a walk while striking out two. Alvarez has put together a strong season in Miami, now the owner of a 12-6 record with a 2.70 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and a 108/33 K/BB ratio. He'll make his final start of the season on the road against the Nationals on Sunday.

Angel Pagan will undergo season-ending back surgery on Thursday.

The operation will repair a bulging disc and also narrow the nerve canal in Pagan's lower back. He will need three months of rehab. Pagan first began experiencing back trouble in mid-June and missed two months of action before returning last month. He had a setback earlier in September and the Giants have decided it's best for him to go ahead and have the procedure. Gregor Blanco and Juan Perez will handle center field while Pagan is out. The 33-year-old hit .300/.342/.389 with three homers and 16 steals over 96 games this season.

Ryu began his throwing program on Saturday but has yet to resume throwing off a mound. The third game of the NLDS isn't until October 6, so the left-hander still has time to get ready if he can progress without any setbacks.
