J.J. Hardy launched a two-run homer in Wednesday's win over the Royals.

The home run, which was Hardy's third in the last four games, came in the second inning off of Luis Mendoza. The shortstop was batting .191/.230/.304 on May 3 but is now up to .215/.254/.385 just a few days later. Clearly the injection he received in his elbow on Tuesday was no cause for concern.

Wilmer Flores clubbed a walk-off homer in the 12th inning to give the Mets a 2-1 win over the Nationals on Friday.

You couldn't write it up any better. Flores, who cried on the field Wednesday night after believing that he had been traded to the Brewers, drove in both runs for the Mets on Friday night and was the most popular person at Citi Field. After hitting an RBI single in the fourth inning, he took Felipe Rivero deep to lead off the bottom of the 12th to end it. It was a feel-good moment for Flores and for the Mets, who are two games back of the Nationals in the NL East.

Welington Castillo belted a game-winning solo home run in the 10th inning on Friday, powering the Diamondbacks to a 6-4 victory over the Astros.

Castillo victimized Pat Neshek for the go-ahead blast, which was immediately followed by a solo shot off the bat of teammate Jake Lamb. Castillo finished the night 3-for-5 and scored three runs. He has been a tremendous addition to the Diamondbacks, hitting .293 (34-for-116) with nine homers and 20 RBI in just 36 games.

Josh Donaldson drove in four runs in Friday's 7-6 win over the Royals, including a walk-off RBI single in the 11th.

Donaldson had a two-run double in the third inning before knocking in another run with a double in the seventh. The game-winning rally in the 11th was set up after Troy Tulowitzki reached on a one-out single and moved over to second base on a balk by Frankin Morales. Donaldson then laced a single to left field to end it. The 29-year-old continues to have a monster year, batting .295/.358/.550 with 25 homers and 73 RBI.

Making his Royals debut, Johnny Cueto allowed three runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Friday.

Cueto didn't have his best command in his first start with his new club, but it was good enough for a quality start. He gave up seven hits and walked a pair while striking out seven batters. The new Royals' ace will get the Tigers next time out.
Jul 31 - 11:43 PM

Manny Machado blasted his 22nd home run of the season on Friday, powering the Orioles to a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over the Tigers.

The Orioles fell behind 6-0 after the first four innings, but never gave up. Adam Jones clobbered a three-run homer in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to two runs, then Machado's two-run shot in the sixth put the O's on top to stay. Machado finished the night 2-for-3 plus a walk with a pair of runs scored and two RBI. He is now slashing a mighty impressive .293/.364/.518 with 22 homers and 54 RBI on the year.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss announced Friday that John Axford has been removed from his role as the team's closer.

Weiss said Friday, "I had a conversation with John a little earlier and I told him I was going to get him out of that ninth inning for a little bit and let him catch his breath". He has blown four saves in his last five appearances and has had difficulty finding the strike zone. Rafael Betancourt and Tommy Kahnle are the two most likely candidates to take over the role.

Clayton Kershaw was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday due to his hip issue.

The same ailment scratched him on Wednesday. He is now scheduled to start on Saturday after an extra day of rest. Zack Greinke will start in his place against the Angels on Friday.

Stephen Strasburg (oblique) will make another rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

Strasburg allowed three runs on four hits over four innings in his first rehab outing Wednesday. As long as he doesn't have a physical setback on Monday, he'll rejoin the Nationals' rotation late next week.
Jul 31 - 6:16 PM

Pirates placed RHP A.J. Burnett on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

That could help to explain the Pirates acquiring J.A. Happ from the Mariners before the trade deadline, as the veteran southpaw will slide into the rotation to replace Burnett. It's unclear at the moment how much time Burnett may miss.
Jul 31 - 6:03 PM

Robinson Cano (abdomen) remained out of the Mariners' lineup Friday.

He's likely to sit out through the weekend with a Grade 1 abdominal strain. The Mariners have brought up Ketel Marte for infield help while Cano recovers.
Jul 31 - 5:53 PM

Mets acquired OF Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers in exchange for RHPs Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa.

The Mets whiffed on Carlos Gomez and Jay Bruce but found the bat they were looking for in Cespedes. He'll patrol left field in New York and should provide a much-needed jolt to the Mets' lineup.
