Jason Heyward (appendectomy) went 0-for-5 with a walk and three strikeouts Thursday in his first minor league rehab game with Triple-A Gwinnett.

While the results were less than ideal, the important part is that he felt good. "Basically you're just trying to get accustomed to seeing the ball again," said Heyward. "It's kind of spring training again as far as not having had any at-bats in a while. So from at-bat to at-bat, you just want to see more pitches. You want to have better timing and get closer and closer to being able to react. I did feel better at-bat to at-bat." Heyward will likely DH on Friday before playing the outfield for the rest of the weekend. It's not clear when he'll be activated from the disabled list, but he's moving in the right direction.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Clayton Kershaw could scratched from Wednesday's scheduled start versus the Athletics due to a hip/glute issue.

It doesn't appear to be a big concern, as Kershaw would simply be pushed back to Friday. The Dodgers will make a decision later Wednesday. If Kershaw is scratched, Mike Bolsinger will move up to take the ball Wednesday.

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Dodgers have acquired Mat Latos and Mike Morse from the Marlins in exchange for prospects.

Wittenmyer adds that the Dodgers will also receive "at least one competitive balance pick." The Dodgers almost surely aren't done shopping for starters, but Latos should fit in nicely in their rotation, as he boasts a 2.96 ERA and 43/9 K/BB ratio over 45 2/3 innings since returning from the disabled list. Morse is merely a salary dump by the Marlins, so he would serve only in a pinch-hitting role in Los Angeles.

Giancarlo Stanton (hand) has been cleared to swing off a tee.

He's been taking dry swings for a week and is ready to take the next step. While manager Dan Jennings wouldn't offer a firm timetable on when Stanton will return, he didn't rule out the slugger being activated at some point next week. "His hand looks good," Jennings said. "It's healed. The scar looks well. Now he's going to start off the tee and into flips. He'll progress at his timetable. It's good to see him making strides the right way."

Byron Buxton (thumb) took batting practice on Tuesday.

He'll continue to take BP this week and could go through other pregame drills by the weekend. Buxton could be sent to the Twins' spring training complex next week if he continues to progress. The young outfielder isn't expected to be activated until mid- to late-August.

Joe Panik will miss a second straight game Wednesday due to back tightness.

Panik noted that it wasn't one play that caused the injury, but rather it's just "one of those things" you have to deal with during a long season. He's considered day-to-day. Ehire Adrianza will get another start at second base Wednesday.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi thinks there's a "better chance" that the Tigers trade David Price than the White Sox trade Jeff Samardzija.

The White Sox suddenly have a better record than the Tigers after winning six straight and might decide to make a run at a Wild Card spot. It's certainly still possible another club makes an offer for Samardzija that they can't refuse, but the righty has pitched really well of late and Chicago could just settle on receiving draft pick compensation for him if he leaves as a free agent.

David Peralta went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, two RBI, and a run scored as the Diamondbacks defeated the Mariners 8-4 on Tuesday.

He walked and stole second base in the seventh but was stranded. Peralta has put up great numbers this season, batting .278/.352/.495 with nine home runs and 45 RBI.

The 31-year-old scored runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings before adding a two-run homer for good measure in the ninth. Gardner is batting .297/.379/.471 with 11 homers, 46 RBI, 15 steals and 72 runs scored, second-most in the American League.

Chris Young had a monster game Tuesday, finishing 3-for-6 with a grand slam, five RBI and four runs scored against the Rangers.

Young came up with the bases loaded in the third inning and took Wandy Rodriguez deep for his 12th homer of the year. The grand slam was his second of the season. Young also had an RBI double in the sixth, his second double of the game. The 31-year-old is hitting .263/.315/.491 overall.

Gerardo Parra went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and three runs scored while extending his hitting streak to 11 games in Tuesday's win against the Giants.

Parra led off the game with a double and came around to score in a two-run opening frame. He led off the third with a single and scored, then tripled and scored in the seventh. Parra is having a career year, batting .324/.365/.517 with nine home runs, 31 RBI, 52 runs scored, and seven stolen bases. He could be wearing a new uniform in the next two days as the trade deadline approaches.
Jul 29 - 12:55 AM

Jose Altuve finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored in the Astros' 10-5 win over the Angels on Tuesday.

Altuve drove in runs in three different innings, proving to be in the right place at the right time on several occasions. He had an RBI single in the second, a two-run single in the fourth and a two-run double in the sixth. The five-RBI game was his first in 606 career games. The second baseman is batting .305/.349/.432 with nine homers, 48 RBI, 54 runs scored and 28 steals overall.
