Lyle Overbay had a monster night against the Royals on Friday, as he finished 4-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored as part of an 11-6 victory.

Overbay launched a two-run homer in the second inning, knocked in one run with a double in the fourth and sparked a five-run rally in the sixth with a two-run double. The five RBI were the most he has had in a game since August 20, 2010 as a member of the Blue Jays. The 36-year-old has been a pleasant surprise while filling in for Mark Teixeira at first base, posting six homers to go along with a .509 slugging percentage and an .811 OPS. He should continue to be a useful option in AL-only leagues for the time being.

Xander Bogaerts was removed from Friday's game against the Mariners after being hit in the helmet by a pitch.

Bogaerts was hit by a Felix Hernandez pitch in the fifth inning but stayed in until the sixth. Brock Holt pinch hit for him in the sixth inning. That he was able to stay in and play shortstop suggests he may have avoided a concussion, but the Red Sox should provide more information on his status after the game.

Brad Peacock left Friday's start against the Indians with an undisclosed injury.

Peacock had been pretty good, holding the Indians to one run on two hits over five innings, before leaving with assistant athletic trainer Rex Jones before the bottom of the sixth inning. Peacock had thrown only 62 pitches before exiting. The Astros should provide an update shortly.

A source tells Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports that Manny Machado is expected to have season-ending knee surgery within a week.

Machado has been on the disabled list since August 12 with a sprained ligament in his right knee, and Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Friday that the third baseman had no timetable for resuming baseball activities. It's a huge loss for the first-place Orioles, who will now have to rely more heavily on Chris Davis and others to fill the position. Machado's season got off to a late start after left knee surgery last season, playing in just 82 games this year.

Jake Arrieta held his former team to one run across seven innings in Friday's 4-1 victory over the Orioles.

He retired the first 13 batters of the game and wound up striking out five while permitting just four hits and one walk. The lone blemish on Arrieta's record was a solo shot in the seventh inning from Nelson Cruz that just barely left the yard. He's allowed just three runs over his last three starts to lower his ERA to 2.53. Arrieta will try to keep it going next week in Cincinnati.

Javier Baez belted a solo homer in Friday's win over the Orioles.

Kevin Gausman had made Baez look pretty silly earlier in the at-bat in the fifth inning, but he hung a 3-2 slider and the young infielder launched it over the bleachers in left field and onto Waveland Avenue. We've seen the good and the bad so far with Baez, as he has an ugly 31/4 K/BB ratio but is also one of just 10 active players with six home runs in his first 18 games.

Anibal Sanchez (pectoral) threw on flat ground Friday.

It's the first time he's done any throwing since he landed on the disabled list earlier this month with a strained right pectoral muscle. Sanchez will play catch again on Saturday and eventually progress to mound work, though it's not clear when that will take place. He's not expected back until mid-September.

Kyle Lohse (ankle) will rejoin the Brewers' rotation on Monday in San Diego.

Lohse hasn't started since August 13 due to a sprained right ankle. He probably could have returned by now, as his throwing program wasn't interrupted, but the Brewers could afford to take it slowly with him with Jimmy Nelson and Mike Fiers pitching so well.
Aug 22 - 5:21 PM

Michael Cuddyer (hamstring) isn't expected to return to the lineup until at least Sunday.

Cuddyer had been expected to return Friday, but his hamstring remains more swollen than expected. "I'm not going on the DL," Cuddyer said. "You can put that in bold letters." Charlie Blackmon is in right field Friday, with Drew Stubbs handling center.
Aug 22 - 5:19 PM

David Ortiz is back in the Red Sox' lineup Friday.

Ortiz left Wednesday's game and then sat out Thursday due to some general soreness, but he's evidently feeling better. Big Papi is batting .263/.355/.523 with 30 homers and 93 RBI this season.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Friday that there's no timetable for when Manny Machado (knee) will resume baseball activities.

That means he's obviously not going to be ready for activation when first eligible on August 27, and in all likelihood it sounds like it will be a while before he returns. Showalter added that he should know more about Machado's status on Saturday. The star third baseman has been out since mid-August with a sprained right knee.

WEEI.com's Alex Speier reports that the Red Sox have reached an agreement with Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo on a seven-year, $72.5 million contract.

MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reported earlier that a deal was close. It's for seven years instead of the initially reported six, but the first year only covers the rest of this season. The contract is a record for a Cuban defector, topping the six-year, $68 million deal Jose Abreu got last offseason. Castillo wants to play in the majors this season, but it's not clear at this point if that's what the Red Sox have planned. There are less than two weeks remaining in the minor league season.
