Royals released RHP Dan Wheeler.

Wheeler had a 9.00 ERA in 11 appearances with the Royals' Triple-A affiliate. He'll look to continue his career elsewhere as organizational relief depth.

Craig Kimbrel (knee) could begin a minor league rehab assignment late next week.

Kimbrel is set to throw a bullpen session Sunday or Monday and he'll do the same on Wednesday. If that all goes well, the next step may be a minor league game. "That could be done at (Triple-A) Pawtucket," Red Sox manager John Farrell said Saturday. "We could be looking at an appearance at Pawtucket. We're not scripting it out past Wednesday, because we could go one of two ways here." Brad Ziegler is filling in at closer for the Red Sox with Koji Uehara (pectoral) possibly done for the year.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Saturday that he is "hopeful" Koji Uehara (pectoral) can return this season.

Which of course means it's possible he will not return this season. Uehara was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a strained pectoral, a unique injury for a pitcher. He got platelet-rich plasma treatment on Friday to try to expedite the healing. "There is no number of days that says Koji's going to put a ball back in his hand," Farrell told reporters Saturday. "He’s just getting past the soreness." Brad Ziegler is now serving as the primary closer in Boston with Craig Kimbrel (knee) also on the shelf.

Yasiel Puig (hamstring) remains out of the Dodgers' lineup Saturday against the Cardinals.

Puig was used as a pinch-hitter in Friday's extra-innings marathon, but he isn't ready to return to the outfield and probably won't start Sunday either. He tweaked his right hamstring Thursday afternoon in D.C.

Nelson Cruz had a monster day at the dish on Saturday, blasting two long balls and plating seven runs in a 14-5 rout of the Blue Jays.

Cruz got the party started in the third inning with a grand slam off of Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey. He then capped off the offense for the M's with a towering three-run shot off Drew Storen in the eighth. He finished the afternoon 2-for-5 and is now hitting an impressive .288/.372/.548 with 25 homers and 65 RBI on the year.

Michael Saunders belted his 18th and 19th home runs of the season in a losing effort against the Mariners.

Saunders has now homered in each of his first two games against his former ballclub. His solo shot off Hisashi Iwakuma in the sixth inning did nothing more than putting a band aid on a stab wound, pulling the Jays to within nine runs at 11-2. He then tagged Wade LeBlanc for a solo shot with two outs in the eighth, making it a 14-3 ballgame. Saunders is having a monster season in the middle of the Jays lineup, slashing .286/.363/.542 with 19 homers and 46 RBI.

Zack Wheeler (elbow) will begin facing live hitters next week, per Mets manager Terry Collins.

That's the final step before a minor league rehab assignment. Wheeler has run into multiple setbacks in his recovery from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but he could become an option for New York in late August if everything runs smoothly from here.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that several teams have called the Royals inquiring on the availability of closer Wade Davis.

The Royals, who are considering selling at the trade deadline, are reportedly demanding a King's ransom for Davis. Heyman notes that the current asking price for Davis is higher than the Yankees are demanding for Aroldis Chapman. Davis is still under contract for a very affordable $10 million club option for next season, while Chapman hits free agency after the 2016 campaign, so there's certainly merit to asking for a higher price. Davis value shouldn't change much if he is dealt, as he's likely to close wherever he ends up. The Nationals are one club that Heyman notes have expressed interest in Davis.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Rays have demanded Jurickson Profar be included if they are to deal one of their available starting pitchers to the Rangers.

Chris Archer, Jake Odorizzi and Matt Moore are all said to be available for the right price, and it appears that price must include Profar if the Rangers are going to land a major upgrade to their starting rotation. The Rangers have said no thus far, but as things get closer to the trade deadline we'll see if their position changes.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Marlins are among the teams that have been discussing Andrew Cashner with the Padres.

The Orioles are also known to be negotiating with the Padres. The Marlins could become a legitimate title contender in the National League with the addition of a second starter behind Jose Fernandez, and Cashner could fit the bill potentially.

Jeff Samardzija has had his scheduled start against the Yankees pushed back to Sunday.

That means it'll be Johnny Cueto, not Samardzija, taking on Ivan Nova and the Yankees on Saturday. Make sure to adjust your lineups accordingly if you had planned on attacking Samardzija in daily leagues.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Orioles and Blue Jays are the leaders in the pursuit of Melvin Upton.

The interest in Upton has certainly intensified in the past day or so, and it's looking increasingly likely that he'll be wearing a new uniform in August. While a park shift away from Petco Park could seem like a boon to his fantasy value, he hasn't handled changes of scenery well in the past, and isn't likely to land with a manager as willing to run as Andy Green has been this season.
