Michael Cuddyer will receive an epidural injection for his neck issue.

Cuddyer was placed on the disabled list over the weekend with what was termed as an "inflamed cervical disc." An MRI didn't reveal any other issues, so the hope is that he'll be ready to return right around when he's first eligible later this month.

Sean Manaea was superb in Tuesday's 9-1 win over the Indians, yielding one run on three hits over seven innings.

Manaea induced eight strikeouts and walked two during this charmed outing. A Chris Gimenez solo home run in the sixth inning represented his only real spot of trouble. With the victory, Manaea improved to 5-8 with a 4.53 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. He will tango with the Astros on the road next time he toes the rubber.

Jake Arrieta was phenomenal in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Padres, tossing eight innings of two-hit, shutout ball.

Don't let the 5-3 final fool you. Arrieta was absolutely lights out and the three runs on the Padres' side of the ledger all scored in the ninth inning, after the ace right-hander had exited stage left. He struck out six and walked two on the evening, finishing out having thrown 99 pitches (59 strikes). It wasn't his most efficient outing in terms of his control, but eight innings of shutout ball is eight innings of shutout ball. Arrieta will bring a sharp 2.62 ERA and 1.04 WHIP into a home start against the Pirates next time out.

Yasmany Tomas left Tuesday's game against the Braves due to mid-back stiffness.

Brandon Drury pinch-hit for Tomas midway through Tuesday's contest, as apparently Tomas' back stiffened up on him during the proceedings. He was waylaid by a stiff neck earlier this month, but no word as of yet whether his current back ailment is in any way related. For the time being, Tomas should be considered day-to-day. He will be reevaluated on Wednesday.

Wilmer Flores hit a three-run home run as the Mets bested the Cardinals 7-4 on Tuesday.

Getting a start against a lefty as per usual, Flores turned on an inside fastball in the first inning for the three-run dinger. It was his only hit in the game and Flores' 13th homer of the year. With first base still a big question mark and Flores' ability to hit left-handed pitching, the 25-year-old should continue to draw starts at the less-hot corner going forward. Flores is hitting .259/.315/.447 in 87 games total.

CC Sabathia was fantastic in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Mariners, firing seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball.

Sabathia struck out seven and walked just one in what was one of his stronger starts of the season. The only run to score on his watch came in the third inning, when Ketel Marte picked up an RBI single off the veteran southpaw. The shiny outing must have felt all the sweeter for what came before, as Sabathia was shelled for seven runs by the Blue Jays last time out. He will try to replicate Tuesday's results when he brings his 4.33 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 117/52 K/BB ratio (137 1/3 innings) into a road date with the Royals next time he toes the rubber.

Mets placed LHP Jon Niese on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee injury.

Niese was forced out of Tuesday's start versus the Cardinals after feeling a shooting pain in his left knee. He managed to record just one out in the first inning before being attended to by the training staff. In a corresponding move, Erik Goeddel was recalled from Triple-A. At this early stage, there is no timetable for Niese's return.

Robert Gsellman earned his first major league win Tuesday, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief against the Cardinals.

Gsellman was thrust into a difficult position for his first MLB appearance, asked to take over for injured starter Jon Niese after Niese faced just four batters. The 23-year-old answered the bell, though, holding the Cardinals to two hits and three walks while striking out two in his debut. He was rewarded with the win for his efforts, another first. Gsellman was recalled on Monday as a likely bullpen arm, but if Niese or starter Steven Matz is forced to miss a turn it will likely be Gsellman who is asked to take the ball instead.

Hernan Perez hit a two-run triple in the seventh inning to help the Brewers get past the Rockies 6-4 on Tuesday.

The hit was Perez' only one in four at-bats, but it was a big one. With two outs and an 0-2 count, Perez slashed a Carlos Estevez pitch down the right field line and into the corner, plating both Jonathan Villar and Ryan Braun to give the Brewers a late lead. It was just the latest noteworthy performance for the 25-year-old this year, who's hitting .282/.308/.458 with 11 homers, 43 RBI, 35 runs scored and 23 steals in 87 games played.

Victor Martinez finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored in Tuesday's 8-3 win over the Twins.

Martinez had three of the Tigers' 14 hits on the evening, including a two-run blast in the seventh. The homer was No. 23 for V-Mart, who now has 73 RBI and 52 runs scored. After enduring a cold July, the 37-year-old is hitting .305 with six homers, 13 RBI and 12 runs scored this month.
Aug 24 - 12:02 AM

Kevin Gausman twirled six shutout innings in Tuesday's 8-1 victory over the Nationals.

It wasn't all that pretty, as Gausman recorded only two strikeouts and needed 110 pitches to get through his six frames. However, five of the six hits he gave up were singles and he managed to keep the Nats off the scoreboard in his best start in a month. Gausman will carry a 3.92 ERA into the Bronx this weekend.

Jose Abreu homered in his third straight game Tuesday, leading the White Sox to a lopsided 9-1 victory over the Phillies.

Abreu finished 2-for-3 with three RBI in the game, knocking an RBI single in the third inning before blasting a two-run homer in the fifth. After a largely pedestrian season, Abreu is lighting it up in the month of August, hitting .373 with six homers, 14 RBI and 13 runs scored. The good month has his overall line up to .285/.341/.455 with 17 home runs, 70 RBI and 48 runs scored.
