Johnny Cueto (lat, oblique) has been cleared to return to the Reds' rotation on Monday in New York.

Cueto threw five shutout innings Tuesday in a rehab start with the Low-A Daytona Dragons and deemed himself fully healthy afterward. He was placed on the disabled list April 15 with a strained right lat and then later began experiencing oblique soreness. But all is well now. The Reds haven't decided whether Mike Leake or Tony Cingrani will be demoted to clear a rotation spot.

Nick Martinez threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up just five hits, and the Rangers held on to beat the Astros 2-1 on Tuesday.

Martinez has slowly gotten better since his early-season woes, and Tuesday was his best effort yet. Martinez gave up just one extra-base hit, a double, among his five hits allowed, and the right-hander didn't walk a batter. The win improved him to 5-11 and lowered his ERA to 4.61. Martinez will have one more start with which to make an impression, starting the Rangers' season finale against the Athletics Sunday.

Nick Markakis had a terrific night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with an RBI single and a two-run home run in Tuesday's win against the Yankees.

Markakis entered the game with a .438 OPS in 15 September games. He has been bothered recently since being hit in the shoulder a week ago, but looked pain-free as he attacked Yankees pitching. The outfielder now has 13 home runs, 47 RBI, and a .275/.339/.382 slash line on the season.

Yordano Ventura held the Indians scoreless over seven innings en route to a win on Tuesday.

The young right-hander has picked it up at the right time for the Royals, as he has a 2.17 ERA in nine starts since the beginning of August. Ventura did walk four, but allowed only four hits (all singles) and struck out six. Ventura has an impressive 3.07 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 153/68 K/BB ratio. He'll make his last start of the season on the road on Sunday against the White Sox.

Gerrit Cole allowed two runs over seven innings, striking out eight, to pitch the Pirates past the Braves 3-2 on Tuesday.

Cole struggled early, allowing a run in the first inning before loading the bases with no outs in the second, but he regrouped to induce a double play that held the Braves to a lone run in the second. After that, he tossed five perfect innings, not allowing a baserunner from the third inning on. The win guaranteed the Pirates at least a Wild Card berth, their second consecutive trip to the postseason, and there's a good chance they'll turn to Cole in the event they find themselves in a one-game playoff. The right-hander is 11-5 with a 3.78 ERA on the year.

Miguel Cabrera kept the Tigers ahead of the Royals in the AL Central, delivering a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth against the White Sox on Tuesday.

The Tigers led 3-0 going into the top of the ninth, but David Price lost his bid for a shutout, allowing three runs to score. With the Royals having taken care of business with the Indians, the Tigers were in danger of falling back into a tie in the AL Central. Cabrera, though, helped them maintain their lead with his 105th RBI on a walk-off single in the bottom half of the ninth. Cabrera, who finished 2-for-5 with a double, has had another productive season, hitting .314/.374/.520 with 23 home runs.

Adam LaRoche's three-run home run, his 26th of the season, proved to be the difference as the Nationals defeated the Mets on Tuesday.

LaRoche broke a 1-1 tie with his three-run shot off of Bartolo Colon. Though he had hit just .103 (3-for-29) in eight games entering the evening, LaRoche now has seven home runs and 21 RBI in the month of September. On the season, he's batting .258/.362/.459 with 91 RBI.

Johnny Cueto threw eight innings of one-run ball in the Reds' 3-1 win over the Brewers Tuesday.

Cueto gave up a Carlos Gomez solo home run to go along with three singles on the evening. He struck out seven in the win. The victory, his fourth in his last five starts, moved him to 19-9 with a 2.29 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 235/65 K/BB ratio over 235 2/3 innings. Cueto has a shot at his first 20-win campaign when he squares off with the Pirates in Sunday's season finale.

Edwin Encarnacion helped the Blue Jays rout the Mariners on Tuesday with an RBI single, a bases loaded walk, and a two-run homer.

Encarnacion's first-inning single put the Jays on the board. His bases-loaded walk in the fifth was part of a seven-run outburst. And his sixth-inning two-run homer off of Erasmo Ramirez was the icing on the cake. Encarnacion now has a .272/.359/.561 and 34 home runs, and is three RBI away from notching his third consecutive 100-RBI season.

Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan reports that the Braves have offered John Hart their full-time general manager position.

He was elevated from senior adviser to interim GM on Monday when the team fired Frank Wren. Hart, of course, has tons of past GM experience between the Indians and Rangers. According to Passan, the 66-year-old has told the Braves he "he needed to give it serious thought." Passan adds that Hart would likely groom 35-year-old assistant GM John Coppolella to eventually take over.

Henderson Alvarez was terrific on Tuesday, tossing 7 2/3 shutout innings as the Marlins edged out the Phillies.

Opposing starter Cole Hamels, of all people, was the only Phillie to register an extra-base hit (a double) against Alvarez. Overall, the right-hander yielded five hits and a walk while striking out two. Alvarez has put together a strong season in Miami, now the owner of a 12-6 record with a 2.70 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and a 108/33 K/BB ratio. He'll make his final start of the season on the road against the Nationals on Sunday.
