Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) is expected to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday or Friday.

Gutierrez has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 23 with a strained right hamstring. He ran the bases for a second time on Wednesday and felt fine. The center fielder should return to the M's next week.

George Springer (quad) still isn't able to run at 100 percent effort.

Springer took batting practice earlier this week and has done some other baseball-related activities, but the big hurdle for him will be running the bases and it doesn't sound like he's close to doing that. The dynamic young outfielder said "I hope so" when asked Saturday if he expects to return before the end of the season.

Rangers activated LHP Derek Holland from the 60-day disabled list.

Holland is scheduled to return to the Rangers' starting rotation on Tuesday against the Royals after missing the first five months of the 2014 season due to knee surgery. He wasn't too sharp on his rehab assignment and probably shouldn't be trusted in mixed fantasy leagues right out of the gate.
Aug 30 - 4:18 PM

Rangers designated 1B/OF Mike Carp for assignment.

Carp lasted less than a month with Texas, batting .125 with zero extra-base hits in 46 plate appearances. He had a really good 2013 season but has struggled mightily this year between the Rangers and Red Sox.
Aug 30 - 4:11 PM

Drew Hutchison allowed just one hit over seven scoreless innings in a win over the Yankees on Saturday.

The one hit was a double by Mark Teixeira in the fourth inning. Otherwise, Hutchison dominated by striking out nine and walking two while throwing 64 out of 103 pitches for strikes. He also hit two batters. Amazingly, this is the first time all season that he has back-to-back quality starts. He'll try to keep it going next week when he brings a 4.47 ERA into a start against the Red Sox.
Aug 30 - 3:50 PM

Jose Bautista accounted for the Blue Jays' offense Saturday against the Yankees with a two-run homer.

Make that homers in four straight games for Bautista. This is the second time in his career he's done that. The veteran slugger now has 28 homers on the year, tying his total from his injury-shortened season last year.
Aug 30 - 3:46 PM

Anthony Rizzo (back) is not expected to return to the lineup this weekend.

Rizzo was pulled from Tuesday's game due to tightness in his lower back and has yet to progress enough to return to the lineup. He'll hope to be back in the lineup during the Cubs' homestand, which begins Monday. Chris Valaika will once again draw the start at first base in his place.
Aug 30 - 11:19 AM

Rusney Castillo will make his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox on Sunday.

He'll play in the Gulf Coast League finals on Sunday, before progressing to join Double-A Portland or Triple-A Pawtucket for their respective postseason series. He's expected to reach the Red Sox at some point in September.
Aug 30 - 9:14 AM

Yasmani Grandal hit a walk-off RBI single in the 12th inning to help the Padres overcome the Dodgers on Friday.

Grandal was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the game prior to his single. The 25-year-old has otherwise had a tough season, slashing .210/.309/.372 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI in 337 plate appearances.
Aug 30 - 2:26 AM

Buster Posey went 5-for-5 with a triple, three RBI, and three runs scored as the Giants routed the Brewers on Friday.

It's the second five-hit game of Posey's career, and it continues the catcher's fantastic month of August. Since the beginning of the month, Posey is batting .350 (36-for-103). He singled in a run in the second inning and tripled in two more in the fifth. Posey owns a .297/.352/.472 slash line with 18 home runs and 71 RBI.
Aug 30 - 1:36 AM

Anthony Rendon reached base in all five plate appearances in Friday's win against the Mariners.

Rendon finished a triple short of the cycle. He drove in his only run with a first inning solo home run to left-center off of Felix Hernandez. He has been just what the Nationals needed at third base after losing Ryan Zimmerman to an injury. Rendon has 18 home runs, 71 RBI, 13 stolen bases, and a .282/.341/.471 slash line.
Aug 30 - 1:16 AM

Chris Iannetta drew a bases-loaded walk and hit a two-run home run in four at-bats as the Angels shut out the Athletics on Friday.

Iannetta came into the game mired in a slump, hitting .056 (1-for-18) dating back to August 20. He broke a scoreless tie with his two-run shot off of Jon Lester in the fifth inning, then walked with the bases loaded to force in a run in the sixth. The catcher has quietly put together a productive season, slashing .257/.372/.412 with six home runs and 37 RBI in 309 plate appearances.
