Nationals optioned OF Eury Perez to Triple-A Syracuse.

Perez was sent down so that the Nationals could add some bullpen help. The 22-year-old speedster went 0-for-5 in five games during his brief stint with the big club.

Masahiro Tanaka shut out the Cubs for eight innings as the Yankees grabbed a 3-0 win in the first half of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Tanaka was scheduled to pitch on Tuesday but the game was called because of rain. He looked well-rested on Wednesday afternoon, yielding just two hits and one walk over his eight shutout frames while racking up 10 strikeouts. It was Tanaka's most dominant start so far in the major leagues, and he'll carry an outstanding 2-0 record, 2.05 ERA, and 0.77 WHIP into his next scheduled outing against the Rays.

Mariners recalled INF Nick Franklin from Triple-A Tacoma.

Franklin earned the promotion after batting .395/.469/.744 with four homers and 13 RBI over his first 11 Triple-A contests this season. While he has yet to play the outfield in any professional game, Franklin played there some in spring training and the rumor is that he could see some time there while up with the big club. He'd probably have to be used some in the outfield to have much fantasy value, as there's really no room for him to play anywhere else.

Mariners placed OF/1B Logan Morrison on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 15, with a right hamstring strain.

Morrison actually suffered the injury on Monday before he took an at-bat or went to his position. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined. LoMo was off to a .150/.227/.150 start with no homers and no RBI in eight games so far this season.
Apr 16 - 3:44 PM

Johnny Cueto spun a gem Wednesday, striking out 12 while giving up just three base hits in a 4-0 shutout win over the Pirates.

A one-out Andrew McCutchen double in the fourth inning was the only time all day the Pirates reached second base. Cueto even contributed a rare hit at the plate. The Reds right-hander only has one win to show for it but has been magnificent so far this season, posting a 1.50 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 35/8 K/BB ratio over 30 innings. He'll face the Pirates again next week.
Apr 16 - 3:35 PM

Jose Tabata has been diagnosed with "mild" concussion-like symptoms.

Tabata had to leave Wednesday's game after colliding with the left field wall. Even though his concussion symptoms are apparently "mild," the Pirates are surely going to place him on the 7-day concussion DL. Travis Snider would see a bump in playing time with Tabata out.
Apr 16 - 2:42 PM

Joe Kelly left Wednesday's game against the Brewers with a left hamstring injury.

Kelly was trying to beat out a bunt and grabbed at the hamstring after running through the bag. He had to be helped down the dugout steps, so the odds of him needing a disabled list stint are probably pretty good. Carlos Martinez would be the first choice that comes to mind replace Kelly in the rotation, but it's possible the Cards will elect to leave him in the bullpen and promote someone like Tyler Lyons. Lyons started for Triple-A Memphis Wednesday.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Wednesday that he expects Curtis Granderson (ribs) back in the lineup on Saturday.

Granderson injured his ribs, forearm and knee when he collided with the wall during Monday's game. He's missing a second straight start Wednesday and evidently will sit out Friday, as well, following Thursday's off day. The offseason signee will return to a .170/.291/.319 batting line with one homer and four RBI on Saturday.
Apr 16 - 1:16 PM

Wednesday's game between the Blue Jays and Twins has been postponed due to inclement weather.

They're expecting a few inches of snow in Minneapolis Wednesday, so they went ahead and banged the game well before first pitch. The weather is supposed to be much better Thursday, when a split doubleheader will now be on the docket. Wednesday's scheduled starters, R.A. Dickey and Mike Pelfrey, will presumably just be pushed back a day.

Astros purchased the contract of OF George Springer from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

News broke late Tuesday night that Springer was getting a promotion, and now the move is official. The top prospect has hit .353 with three homers, nine RBI and four stolen bases in his first 13 contests for Oklahoma City this season after batting .303/.411/.600 with 37 longballs and 45 steals last year. He'll play every day -- likely in right field -- and needs to be owned in all fantasy formats.
Apr 16 - 11:12 AM

David Robertson (groin) remains on track to return from the disabled list when first eligible on April 22.

Robertson has been throwing on flat ground and will throw off a mound Thursday for the first time since landing on the DL. Shawn Kelley has been closing for the Yankees in Robertson's absence but will go back to a setup role next week.
Apr 16 - 10:51 AM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the media after Tuesday's game that Kole Calhoun (ankle) is heading for the disabled list.

Calhoun will join Josh Hamilton on the shelf after painfully rolling his ankle running through first base in the 11st inning. "I just rolled it and it hurt real bad," said Calhoun, who was on crutches after the game. "It’s just a freak thing, you know?" We won't know Calhoun's timeline until he's further evaluated. The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser wondered on Twitter whether Los Angeles could target Sam Fuld, who was recently waived by the A's. Unless they bring somebody else in, Collin Cowgill is likely in line for more at-bats in the near future.
