Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday that the club has discussed calling up prospect outfielders Yasiel Puig and Joc Pederson.

Very interesting. However, while the Dodgers are struggling to score runs, it's hard to see a great fit for playing time as long as Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and Carl Crawford are healthy. Puig, 22, is batting .314/.385/.579 with six homers and a .964 OPS through 32 games this season with Double-A Chattanooga. Pederson has been even better, batting .327/.400/.554 with eight homers, 13 stolen bases and a .954 OPS.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Noah Syndergaard may not make his scheduled start Sunday against the Phillies.

The plan had been for Syndergaard to throw about 25 pitches on Sunday but now the Mets are leaning toward having him throw a bullpen session instead. The Mets need Syndergaard fresh for Wednesday's Wild Card game at Citi Field. Collins also said that Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera will have the day off on Sunday.

DJ LeMahieu is not in the Rockies' lineup Saturday against the Brewers.

It's his second absence in the last three days, though LeMahieu isn't known to be dealing with any injuries. Perhaps manager Walt Weiss is looking to preserve his National League batting title. With two games to go, LeMahieu leads Washington's Daniel Murphy by a thin .348 to .347 margin. Daniel Descalso will cover second base in his absence.
Oct 1 - 4:54 PM

Jedd Gyorko blasted a go-ahead solo homer in the eighth inning on Saturday, powering the Cardinals to a much-needed 4-3 victory over the Pirates.

With the victory, the Cardinals now sit just 1/2 game back of the Giants in their race for the final wild card berth in the National League, with the Giants set to take on Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers on Saturday night. The Cardinals rallied from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning, setting the stage for Gyorko's dramatic blast in the eighth. He has been a tremendous source of power in the middle of the Cardinals lineup, slashing .242/.304/.496 with 30 bombs and 58 RBI.
Oct 1 - 4:44 PM

Adrian Beltre is not in the Rangers' lineup Saturday against the Rays.

He's just getting a breather before the postseason. Beltre has been outstanding this year, hitting .299 with 32 HR and 104 RBI while providing his usual stellar glove work at third base. He should become the 31st player to reach 3,000 hits next season.. Joey Gallo will handle the hot corner on Saturday.
Oct 1 - 4:40 PM

Bartolo Colon earned his 15th victory of the season and secured the top wild card spot in the National League for the Mets on Saturday with a strong showing over five innings of two-run ball against the Phillies.

The ageless wonder scattered five hits on the day and didn't walk a batter. All of the damage against him came on one mighty swing of the bat by Ryan Howard in the fifth inning. He concludes a terrific regular season with a 15-8 record, 3.43 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 128/32 K/BB ratio over 191 2/3 innings.
Oct 1 - 4:17 PM

Carlos Martinez came up huge for the Cardinals on Friday by tossing seven scoreless innings in a 7-0 win over the Pirates.

That’s why he’s their ace. Martinez scattered five hits — all of them singles — while walking just one batter and striking out nine. He induced 18 swinging strikes in his 104 pitches. Martinez improved to 16-9 with the victory and will finish the regular season with a 3.04 ERA and 174/70 K/BB ratio over 195 1/3 innings.

David Ortiz slugged a go-ahead two-run homer to lead the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Blue Jays on Friday.

Well, of course he did. The Blue Jays had a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Dustin Pedroia and Mookie Betts each drove in runs with singles to tie things up before Ortiz took Brett Cecil deep down the right-field line. Ortiz now has 38 home runs, his most since his 30-season in 2006. He also had an RBI single on the night and finds himself tied for the AL lead with 127 RBI. He leads the majors with a .625 slugging percentage and a 1.027 OPS. It has been a remarkable swan song, but Red Sox fans are hoping he has more heroics in store during the postseason.

Yu Darvish was in dominant form in Friday's victory over the Rays, punching out 12 over six innings of one-run baseball.

He allowed just three hits and a walk in the impressive outing. The only blemish on his night was Evan Longoria's RBI double in the sixth inning. Darvish finishes the regular season with a 7-5 record, 3.41 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 132/31 K/BB ratio over 100 1/3 innings. With Darvish and Cole Hamels atop the Rangers' rotation, they look like a team that no one will want to tangle with come playoff time.

Miguel Cabrera launched a pair of home runs on Friday, powering the Tigers to a critically-important 6-2 victory over the Braves in Atlanta.

In a game that the Tigers absolutely needed to win, Cabrera and the rest of the Tigers' offense came through in a big way. Ian Kinsler started the game with a solo homer and two batters later Cabrera socked a two-run blast to give the Tigers an early 3-0 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. He added on a solo shot in the third inning, finishing the night 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. He's now hitting .315/.394/.565 with 38 homers and 108 RBI in what has been another outstanding season.
Sep 30 - 11:19 PM

Nolan Arenado mashed his NL-leading 41st homer of the season in Friday’s 4-1 victory over the Brewers.

Arenado connected for a two-run homer against Brent Suter in the bottom of the first inning to give the Rockies an early lead. The 25-year-old finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored and is batting .296/.363/.575 on the year. He leads the majors with 133 RBI. Just to put things in perspective here, nobody else in the NL has more than 108 RBI.
Sep 30 - 11:15 PM

Mark Trumbo mashed his MLB-leading 47th homer in Friday’s win over the Yankees.

It was a two-run homer in a six-run fifth inning which put the game out of reach. Trumbo has hit just .202 during the second half, but at least he has managed 19 homers and 40 RBI in 70 games during that time.
