Braves signed RHP Mitch Atkins to a minor league contract.

Atkins had been pitching for the independent league Somerset Patriots, posting a 3.97 ERA in seven starts. The 27-year-old will report to Double-A Mississippi. He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2011.

Angel Pagan will undergo an MRI on his left hamstring on Tuesday.

Pagan aggravated the hamstring during Monday's game against the Padres. He managed to avoid the disabled list the first time around, but the Giants could be forced to make a move to add another outfielder to the mix.

Clayton Kershaw's third shutout of the month was a two-hitter Monday in the Dodgers' 1-0 win over the Reds.

Three shutouts in a year is really impressive these days. Kershaw has that many this month alone. Only two other teams in baseball have as many complete games this year (the Giants and White Sox) as Kershaw has shutouts this month. Overall, Kershaw is 7-1 with a 1.48 ERA, and if anything, that underestimates how well he's pitched.

Salvador Perez went 5-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored in Monday's victory over the Twins.

It was the first five-hit game of the All-Star catcher's career, and the slow-footed Perez even managed to mix in a triple among his five base knocks. Perez has a modest nine-game hitting streak going, and he's lifted his average from .226 to .270 over that stretch.

Randal Grichuk smacked a walk-off, solo home run in the ninth inning against the Cubs on Monday.

Grichuk's opposite-field shot off of Adam Warren with two outs landed in the Cards' bullpen and sent the fans in St. Louis home happy. He had two of the team's five hits on the night and scored two of their runs. Grichuk has been moved down in the order and is hitting only .228/.307/.419 on the year after the big night, but he's capable of providing big power in spurts if he can get hot.
May 23 - 11:58 PM

Nick Tropeano held the Rangers off the scoreboard for 6 2/3 innings in Monday's 2-0 victory.

Derek Holland pitched well, but Tropeano was better in this one. The young right-hander gave up just four hits -- three singles -- on the night while striking out six and issuing just one walk. Tropeano has yielded just one run over his last two starts to lower his ERA on the season to 2.86. He's also struck out a batter per frame, although his WHIP sits at 1.47 thanks to 23 walks. Tropeano will try to keep it going this weekend versus the Astros.
May 23 - 11:51 PM

David Wright smacked a three-run homer in Monday's victory over the Nationals.

Things started to fall apart for Nats starter Gio Gonzalez in the third inning, and it began with Wright's three-run blast. It was the third baseman's first longball since May seventh and his fifth on the season. Wright has been getting more off days this month as his back acts up and remains a health risk going forward.
May 23 - 11:30 PM

Marcell Ozuna stayed hot Monday, going 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in a win over the Rays.

Ozuna's blast to left field in the third inning off of Matt Moore was a mammoth shot measure at nearly 450 feet. The Marlins' outfielder has put together a fantastic May with a .397/.420/.705 batting line and five home runs over 21 games. He's up to .321/.364/.576 with nine dingers on the season.
May 23 - 11:11 PM

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin confirmed that Odubel Herrera was pulled from Monday's game against the Tigers for lack of hustle.

Herrera didn't run out a ball to the pitcher in the seventh inning and Mackanin said that he "didn't like it." Fortunately, his exit wasn't injury-related, but Mackanin wanted to teach a lesson to the dynamic 24-year-old.
May 23 - 10:51 PM

Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-3 with a pair of solo homers in Monday's win over the Phillies.

Cabrera's dingers in the third and fifth innings both tied the game at the time, and he scored the winning run on a Victor Martinez RBI single in the seventh. Miggy's slow start to the season seems like a distant memory. He's now batting .515 with seven home runs over his last nine games.
May 23 - 10:36 PM

Braves designated LHP Brian Matusz for assignment.

Well, that was fast. The Braves acquired Matusz from the Orioles on Monday, but the deal was all about the draft pick (No. 76 overall in June's draft) and the corresponding draft pool money. They covered his remaining salary (around $3 million) in order to get the deal done.
May 23 - 9:13 PM

Josh Reddick will not require surgery on his left thumb.

Reddick, who fractured his thumb on a head-first slide on Thursday, got the good news while visiting a hand specialist Monday. The expectation is that he'll miss 4-6 weeks, which places his return around late-June or early-July.
