White Sox recalled LHP Leyson Septimo from the 60-day disabled list; sent him outright to Triple-A Charlotte.

Septimo is fully recovered from his left shoulder strain, but the White Sox don't have a spot for him right now in their bullpen. He will get a look eventually.

Max Scherzer (finger) is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session Saturday in Nationals camp.

Scherzer has been eased into action this spring after battling a stress fracture in his right ring finger down the stretch in 2016. The ace right-hander told reporters last week that he could not commit to being ready for Opening Day, but it definitely hasn't been ruled out. Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Scherzer threw the ball really well during a long toss session on Wednesday.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon confirmed Thursday that Kyle Schwarber is the clear frontrunner to bat leadoff.

Schwarber doesn't have the physique of a traditional leadoff man, but that bat plays anywhere and the No. 1 spot in the lineup just means more plate appearances. Schwarber, 23, owns an .831 OPS with 16 home runs and 43 RBI through his first 71 major league games. He went 7-for-17 (.412) with three walks last year in the World Series.

Jake Peavy has yet to sign with a team due to family issues.

Peavy is going through a divorce, and he has four young sons. "It hurts not to be in spring training," the veteran right-hander told ESPN. "I know that day is coming, but right now being a dad is absolutely No. 1. There’s no way in a million years that I could leave my boys at this time." There should be a minor league contract out there somewhere for him when he's ready to return to the mound.

Josh Hamilton has no new structural damage in his surgically-repaired left knee.

Hamilton was flown to Houston on Wednesday for a thorough examination of the knee after experiencing a tweak while running Tuesday in Rangers camp. It's just some minor discomfort, but the veteran slugger won't participate in workouts for at least a couple days. He's a poor bet to stay healthy and productive in 2017.

According to Jon Heyman, the Rangers are discussing a long-term extension with second baseman Rougned Odor.

Heyman says the Texas front office is "believed to have offered something in the range of the $52.5-million, six-year deal Jason Kipnis did as a pre-arb player with the Indians." Odor and Kipnis have the same agent, so this isn't some random comp. It sounds like the goal is to get something hammered out before the end of spring training. Odor, 23, tallied 33 home runs, 88 RBI, 14 stolen bases, and 89 runs scored in 150 games last season for the Rangers. He is currently under control through 2020.

Zach Britton told reporters Thursday morning that his oblique is improving.

Britton felt some discomfort on his side after throwing a bullpen session Monday in Orioles camp and he has been sitting out of workouts since. It's just a precautionary measure here in late February. The stud closer should be all caught up by the opening of the 2017 regular season.

Carlos Gonzalez said that "there's no conversation" with the Rockies regarding an extension right now.

"It’s up to them. They’re the ones that make the decision. We don’t make the decision. We just listen and work," Gonzalez said. He is entering the final year of his contract. In early January, general manager Jeff Bridich indicated that the team was hoping to work out an extension. There do not appear to have been any substantive talks since. This past season, the 31-year-old Gonzalez whacked 25 home runs and notched an even 100 RBI while slashing .298/.350/.505 in 584 at-bats.

Todd Frazier suffered an oblique strain on Monday.

The issue was originally described as soreness in his lower left side. Either way, he's likely to be shut down for a few days. There's no need to take a chance with him this early in the spring.

Pirates head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Josh Bell (knee) is ahead of schedule and has been cleared for everything except for full-speed running.

Great news. Bell underwent knee surgery three weeks ago, but he already progressed to taking some swings against Jameson Taillon and Tyler Glasnow on Tuesday. The Pirates will ease him back into running, but it shouldn't take him long to get ready for game action.

Will Smith has been shut down with left elbow inflammation.

The MRI came back clean, but the Giants plan to back off him for the next week. Giants manager Bruce Bochy is still confident he'll be ready for the start of the season, but he can't afford any significant setbacks. Smith posted a 2.95 ERA in 26 appearances after being acquired from the Brewers last August and will pitch in a set-up role if healthy in 2017.

Josh Hamilton will have his left knee examined in Houston on Wednesday after feeling something while running on Tuesday.

It's the same knee which required surgery to repair an ACL injury and arterial and meniscus cartilage last June. We should know more about his status soon, but this is obviously a troubling development. Hamilton, 35, didn't play at all in the majors last season and has appeared in just 139 games dating back to the start of 2014. He's in camp as a non-roster invitee this spring, but this could be the end of the line for him if he suffered another significant injury.
