Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Friday that Tom Wilhelmsen will not be used as the team's closer for at least his next two or three outings.

The Mariners want to see Wilhelmsen work on improving his command and location in some non-save situations before being thrust back into the ninth inning. They'll utilize the dreaded closer-by-committee for the time being, with Carter Capps the most likely beneficiary.

Matt Moore threw six scoreless innings against Colorado in a 4-0 win on Wednesday.

Moore has had a very disappointing season for the Giants, but this was a nice reminder that his struggles are not due to a lack of talent. He did allow six hits and two walks, but he struck out six and was able to keep the Rockies off the scoreboard. He'll look to build on this start when he gets the ball against Arizona on Tuesday in what should be the southpaw's last start of 2017.

David Price could pitch in a save situation for the Red Sox on Wednesday night, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell.

Craig Kimbrel and Addison Reed are both unavailable due to their recent usage. Price made his first relief appearance for the Red Sox on Sunday, throwing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Sep 20 - 5:52 PM

Didi Gregorius hit his 25th home run of the season Wednesday in the Yankees' 11-3 rout of the Twins.

It was a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning, capping off a six-run frame for the Bronx Bombers. Gregorius can now claim the highest single-season home run total of any shortstop in Yankees history. Derek Jeter hit 24 back in 1999.
Sep 20 - 4:43 PM

Daniel Mengden fired seven scoreless innings Wednesday in the Athletics' 3-2 win over the Tigers.

Mengden threw the first shutout of his career in his last start Friday against the Phillies and he kept that theme intact Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park. Detroit's offense managed seven hits against him, but six of those were singles and Mengden struck out four batters while issuing zero walks. The 24-year-old right-hander will bring a shiny 3.30 ERA and 1.07 WHIP (covering 30 innings) into his next start at home against the Mariners. He'll have some definite fantasy streaming appeal in that one.
Sep 20 - 4:37 PM

Jimmy Nelson underwent successful surgery on his right shoulder and is expected to miss a "chunk" of the 2018 season, according to Brewers general manager David Stearns.

It was originally announced that the surgery could just be a "cleanup," but Nelson needed some of his labrum repaired, as it turned out. It's a potentially big blow not only to Nelson's 2018 prospects but perhaps even his career, as the history of pitchers coming back from labrum surgery is sketchy, at best. Obviously, it's a big bummer for a guy who had a big breakout this season.
Sep 20 - 4:35 PM

Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in the Marlins' 9-2 defeat of the Mets on Wednesday.

Stanton hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning and then belted a two-run shot for his 56th home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth. He has 10 games left to reach the 60-homer benchmark and three of those games will be at Coors Field. Stanton also has three games at power-friendly Chase Field this weekend.
Sep 20 - 4:07 PM

Raisel Iglesias felt light-headed while trying to warm up on Tuesday night.

That's why he never made an appearance in the Reds' extra-innings loss to the visiting Cardinals. Iglesias is believed to be dealing with the flu and might also be unavailable for Wednesday's game. Reds manager Bryan Price will likely play the matchups if a save situation should arise.
Sep 20 - 3:59 PM

Daniel Murphy (hamstring) is back in the Nationals' starting lineup on Wednesday.

Murphy was a late scratch Tuesday due to minor tightness in his left hamstring. It's clearly not a serious concern. He is starting at second base and batting third Wednesday versus Braves right-hander Lucas Sims.
Sep 20 - 3:36 PM

Jake Arrieta (hamstring) has been cleared to start Thursday against the Brewers.

It will be the first outing for Arrieta since he suffered a Grade 1 strain of his right hamstring on September 4. He's expected to be limited to 75-80 pitches, but the 31-year-old right-hander is a must-start anyway in all relevant fantasy leagues. Arrieta, an impending free agent, holds a dominant 2.01 ERA in 71 2/3 innings since the beginning of July.
Sep 20 - 3:27 PM

Matt Carpenter (shoulder) is back in the Cardinals' starting lineup on Wednesday night against the Reds.

Carpenter was on the bench Tuesday and admitted after the game that he will be playing through shoulder discomfort for the remainder of the 2017 regular season. He is starting at first base and hitting leadoff Wednesday versus Cincinnati right-hander Rookie Davis. Jose Martinez is sitting.
Sep 20 - 2:59 PM

Matt Kemp (hamstring) is absent from the Braves' starting lineup again on Wednesday.

This is the fourth straight absence for Kemp, who tweaked his left hamstring last Friday. He might not see much playing time over these final 12 regular-season games. Adonis Garcia is in left field and batting sixth Wednesday versus Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez.
