Johnny Cueto allowed just one run in six innings Sunday as the Reds beat the Brewers 5-1.

The Cardinals lost to the Marlins so Cincinnati was able to pick up a game in the National League Central standings. They're now just 2 1/2 back. Cueto, making his first start since being activated from the disabled list, yielded five hits and no walks while fanning three Milwaukee hitters. He has a brilliant 4-0 record, 2.08 ERA and 0.88 WHIP on the year.

Athletics recalled SS Franklin Barreto from Triple-A Nashville.

The club's top prospect, the 21-year-old Barreto was hitting .281/.326/.428 with eight homers, 32 RBI and four stolen bases at Triple-A. He'll function as the team's primary shortstop until Marcus Semien is ready to return from the disabled list.

Masahiro Tanaka fired eight scoreless frames in a no-decision against the Rangers on Friday.

Tanaka was on point, allowing just three hits while striking out nine and walking a pair. He threw first-pitch strikes to 26 out of the 27 batters he faced. It was his longest outing since his shutout against the Red Sox back on April 27. Fantasy owners will probably want to see back-to-back strong outings before trusting Tanaka again, but an effort like this one shows why folks should keep the faith.

Yankees designated first baseman Chris Carter for assignment.

So much for the 2016 NL home run champ. Carter hit just .204 with eight homers and 23 RBI in 167 at-bats, but the Yankees probably would have stuck with him longer if not for his poor defense at first base. Now they'll go to Tyler Austin, a player with a similar profile but one who has been red-hot in the minors.
Jun 24 - 1:26 AM

Rays designated C Derek Norris for assignment.

It's a tough break for the veteran backstop who went 3-for-3 with a homer run and three runs scored in Friday's lopsided victory, but Wilson Ramos is set to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday. Norris shouldn't be out of work for long as several clubs could use an offensive upgrade behind the plate.
Jun 23 - 11:29 PM

Brian Goodwin went 3-for-4, walked twice and blasted a pair of home runs on Friday, leading the Nationals to victory over the Reds.

Goodwin got the Nats on the board with a solo shot off of Luis Castillo in the first inning. He added another solo blast in the seventh off of Wandy Peralta that pulled the Nationals even at 5-5 and would eventually force extra innings. Goodwin also delivered a two-out single in the 10th inning that advanced Trea Turner to third base, setting the stage for Bryce Harper's walkoff winner. Goodwin is hitting .265/.326/.578 with six homers and 15 RBI in his first 92 plate appearances with the Nationals.

Jose Urena was outstanding in Friday's victory over the Cubs, scattering five hits over six shutout innings.

The right-hander walked three and struck out three on the night. He has been great through 14 starts for the Fish, compiling a 6-2 record, 3.33 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 44/27 K/BB ratio across 70 1/3 innings. He'll look to replicate this fine performance when he does battle against the Mets on Thursday.
Jun 23 - 10:03 PM

Howie Kendrick was scratched from the Phillies' lineup on Friday due to hamstring tightness.

The veteran utilityman is considered day-to-day. Andres Blanco is starting at second base for the Phillies against Patrick Corbin and the Diamondbacks.
Jun 23 - 8:57 PM

Asdrubal Cabrera is starting at second base on Friday against the Giants.

The veteran infielder isn't happy about the switch back to a position that he hasn't played since September of 2014. In fact, he's now hoping to be traded. The .193-hitting Jose Reyes is starting at shortstop and batting eighth for the Mets on Friday.

Julio Urias will undergo surgery to repair the left anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Neal El Attrache. It's a major procedure which will keep him sidelined for 12-14 months. Urias might not be a factor again until well into the second half next year. Brutal news for the 20-year-old.
Jun 23 - 7:21 PM

Dustin Pedroia (ribs) has been added to the Red Sox' lineup.

He had been slated to miss a fourth straight start after he was hit in the ribs by a pitch Sunday, but Pedroia apparently talked his way in there. He's at second base and batting second versus Alex Meyer and the Angels.
Jun 23 - 5:39 PM

Kyle Hendricks (hand) could resume playing catch as soon as Saturday or Sunday.

Hendricks has been shut down for the last two weeks with tendinitis in his right hand, but it appears the soreness has abated to a certain degree. Obviously, if he does play catch this weekend it would be the first step in a throwing progression, so he's still a little ways away. A return before the All-Star break looks unlikely.
