Tigers placed C Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list with a deep contusion on his left forearm.

Avila suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch on Sunday. Bryan Holaday has been called up in a corresponding roster move while Brayan Pena figures to get most of the playing time behind the plate.

Jesus Aguilar mashed his seventh home run of the spring Wednesday in the Brewers’ Cactus League loss to the Angels.

It was a solo shot off starter Matt Shoemaker. He also singled to begin the fourth inning. Aguilar has put himself on the map by hitting .466 with 17 RBI over 58 Cactus League at-bats. He’ll open the year as the backup first baseman in Milwaukee but could push Eric Thames for at-bats if he continues his torrid hot streak.

Ichiro Suzuki said that he wants to play until he is 50 years old.

The 43-year-old future Hall of Famer is the oldest active position player in majors. Among all players, only Bartolo Colon (50 days his senior) is older. Said Ichiro of the possibility of playing until 50, "Nobody knows what the future holds. But the way I feel, how I’m thinking, I feel like nothing can stop me from doing it." This past season, Ichiro saw 327 at-bats with the Marlins and hit .291/.354/.376 with 48 runs scored and 10 steals. He will once again serve as the team's fourth outfielder during the coming season.

Steven Matz (elbow) won't be ready for the start of the season.

That's the way it was already trending, but now it's official. Matz has resumed throwing after being scratched from his final Grapefruit League start, but he was sent for an MRI on Wednesday as a follow-up. There could be good news in there, but either way, he won't be ready for his first turn through the rotation. The Mets have yet to make a final decision between Seth Lugo and Zack Wheeler for the fifth spot. Odds are that Lugo gets the nod.

According to J.J. Bailey of KMOV, tests indicate that Randal Grichuk didn't suffer a break in his right hand.

Grichuk was hit in the right hand by a pitch on Wednesday, but the Cardinals don't sound overly concerned. He didn't receive an X-ray, but he'll be sent for one in the event that his hand remains an issue on Thursday.

Gregory Polanco (shoulder) saw 10 at-bats on the minor league side at Pirate City on Wednesday.

He also threw from a distance of 90 feet. It's good news for Polanco, who has been dealing with discomfort in his left shoulder over the past few days. He's slated to play in a game on Friday, so he's trending in the right direction leading into Opening Day.

Adrian Beltre (calf) will be re-evaluated over the weekend.

Beltre came down with some tightness in his right calf muscle on Monday, though an MRI showed it wasn't severe. While he initially expressed confidence about his readiness for Opening Day, he's running out of time to prove it. The disabled list could eventually be an option if he doesn't show enough progress this weekend.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that Corey Seager (oblique) is expected to start in Saturday's exhibition game against the Angels.

Seager hasn’t played in a major league game since March 3 due to an oblique issue, but he has been getting work on the minor league side in recent days. He's slated to play in another minor league game on Wednesday. The Dodgers have been careful with their prized shortstop, but all signs are pointing to him being ready for the opener.
Mar 29 - 1:26 PM

Carter Capps (elbow) will begin the season on the 10-day disabled list.

Capps is making his way back from Tommy John surgery and was shaky in his Cactus League debut on Monday, so it doesn't make sense to push things. He could be ready relatively soon.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Pirates have placed Jared Hughes on release waivers.

Hughes has really struggled this spring, allowing 15 runs (12 earned) on 16 hits and four walks over 9 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old has compiled a 2.41 ERA over the past three seasons and induces plenty of ground balls, but he has averaged just 5.0 K/9 in that time. He's under contract for $2.825 million this season.

Addison Russell (back) said Wednesday that he feels 100 percent.

Russell hasn't played in a week due to back soreness and isn't ready to return to the lineup just yet, but he's expected to do some hitting in the cage on Wednesday before returning on Thursday. Barring a setback, he's still on track to be ready for the season.

Jeurys Familia has been suspended 15 games for violating MLB's joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy

This confirms a report from Billy Witz of the New York Times. The suspension is for Familia's arrest on October 31 for simple assault of his wife, Bianca Rivas. The charge was dismissed in December. The original expectation was that Familia would receive a suspension in line with Aroldis Chapman's 30-game domestic violence ban last year, but recent reports indicated that the suspension was expected to be lighter. "The evidence reviewed by my office does not support a determination that Mr. Familia physically assaulted his wife, or threatened her or others with physical force or harm, on Oct. 31, 2016. Nevertheless, I have concluded that Mr. Familia's overall conduct that night was inappropriate, violated the policy, and warrants discipline," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred wrote in a statement. Familia could be eligible to rejoin the Mets as soon as April 20. Addison Reed will fill in at closer for a couple of weeks.
