The Rockies will option Jeff Francis to Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to Thursday's game.

The move won't be made official until the Rockies call up Roy Oswalt. The club is hoping that Francis will agree to stick around for depth, but he has the option of choosing free agency because of his major league service time. He's put up a 6.58 ERA and 1.56 WHIP this season and wouldn't figure to net a major league deal elsewhere.

Cubs signed RHP Pedro Strop to a one-year, $5.85 million contract extension with a $6.25 million club option for 2019.

The two sides avoided arbitration earlier this month with a one-year, $5.5 million contract, and they've now tacked on one and potentially two more years. Strop had been slated to hit free agency next winter. The 31-year-old has been excellent since arriving in Chicago at the 2013 trade deadline, posting a 2.68 ERA with 254 strikeouts across 211 1/3 relief innings. He'll again be a setup man for the Cubs in 2017.

Adrian Beltre (calf) will do some jogging on Friday.

It's the first time he's really tested out his left calf since he strained it last week. Beltre's injury could keep him from playing for his native Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, but he should be fine come Opening Day as long as he doesn't have a setback. He's averaged 152 games played over the last five seasons, which is quite a feat especially since he'll turn 38 in April.

Marcell Ozuna is nursing some tightness in his shoulder.

Ozuna was already dealing with the tightness when he reported to camp, but the Marlins are saying that it's mild. He was spotted making throws from the outfield during drills Friday. Still, he'll be eased into game action, as the club is certainly in no rush to push him at this point. Ozuna batted .266/.321/.452 with 23 homers for the Marlins last season.

Nationals signed C Matt Wieters to a two-year, $21 million contract.

The deal was first reported on Tuesday and has now become official. Wieters' contract includes an opt-out after the first year, and $5 million of the salary is deferred. He'll assume everyday catching duties for the Nationals, which will put Derek Norris on the trade market.

Max Scherzer (finger) will throw only his secondary stuff in a bullpen session Saturday.

Scherzer is unable to use his fastball grip without feeling pain in his right ring finger, which is still recovering from a stress fracture that he suffered last August. The right-hander hasn't committed to being ready for Opening Day, so this is a situation that obviously should be watched closely over the next month.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Dodgers "asked" about Justin Verlander this offseason but ultimately thought his price tag was too high.

Verlander owns a home in Beverly Hills with fiancée Kate Upton and it sounds like he would have been willing to waive his no-trade clause to join the Dodgers. However, the Dodgers are trying to get under the luxury tax and weren't willing to pay Verlander's $28 million salary. Though a deal for Verlander was never close, the two sides could resume talks at a later date. Verlander enjoyed a resurgent 2016 campaign, finishing second in AL Cy Young voting behind former teammate Rick Porcello.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said it was "disappointing" to see Rusney Castillo jog down the line on a doubleplay grounder during Thursday's exhibition game against Northeastern.

Castillo claimed he lost track of the number of outs, but that doesn't really excuse the jogging. Farrell noted after the game that the 29-year-old outfielder does not have a spot on the 40-man roster leading into the 2017 regular season, and it's a good bet that won't change this spring. Castillo was signed to a seven-year, $72.5 million contract out of Cuba in 2014. He is already one of the biggest financial busts in baseball history.

Max Scherzer (finger) is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session Saturday in Nationals camp.

Scherzer has been eased into action this spring after battling a stress fracture in his right ring finger down the stretch in 2016. The ace right-hander told reporters last week that he could not commit to being ready for Opening Day, but it definitely hasn't been ruled out. Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Scherzer threw the ball really well during a long toss session on Wednesday.

Jake Peavy has yet to sign with a team due to family issues.

Peavy is going through a divorce, and he has four young sons. "It hurts not to be in spring training," the veteran right-hander told ESPN. "I know that day is coming, but right now being a dad is absolutely No. 1. There’s no way in a million years that I could leave my boys at this time." There should be a minor league contract out there somewhere for him when he's ready to return to the mound.

Josh Hamilton has no new structural damage in his surgically-repaired left knee.

Hamilton was flown to Houston on Wednesday for a thorough examination of the knee after experiencing a tweak while running Tuesday in Rangers camp. It's just some minor discomfort, but the veteran slugger won't participate in workouts for at least a couple days. He's a poor bet to stay healthy and productive in 2017.

According to Jon Heyman, the Rangers are discussing a long-term extension with second baseman Rougned Odor.

Heyman says the Texas front office is "believed to have offered something in the range of the $52.5-million, six-year deal Jason Kipnis did as a pre-arb player with the Indians." Odor and Kipnis have the same agent, so this isn't some random comp. It sounds like the goal is to get something hammered out before the end of spring training. Odor, 23, tallied 33 home runs, 88 RBI, 14 stolen bases, and 89 runs scored in 150 games last season for the Rangers. He is currently under control through 2020.
