Rays manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday that Alex Cobb (concussion) has some "fluid buildup" in his ear.

Cobb was diagnosed with a mild concussion last Saturday after taking an Eric Hosmer line drive off the right side of his head. "He's doing really well, there's not this high level of concern," Maddon told reporters on Wednesday. "It's just a matter of working through the initial impact — which was incredible as you all saw — and being patient with it." There is no timetable for the right-hander's return from the disabled list.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Rockies intend to re-sign impending free agent Michael Cuddyer.

Which obviously means that the veteran outfielder won't be made available around the July 31 deadline. The Rockies have a crowded outfield (with some good, cost-controlled young players) but team owner Dick Monfort loves Cuddyer's presence in the clubhouse and the feeling is that he wouldn't attract much of a return package on the trade market because of his current shoulder injury. Negotiations toward a contract extension could begin later this summer.

Brandon Phillips (thumb) is not in the Reds' starting lineup Thursday afternoon versus the Cubs.

Phillips suffered a sprained left thumb while attempting to make a diving play on defense Wednesday night. The second baseman looked to be in a great deal of pain as he was helped off the field and could be held out until after the All-Star break. Ramon Santiago is starting at second for the Reds on Thursday against Chicago.

Billy Hamilton (hamstring) is not in the Reds' starting lineup on Thursday versus the Cubs.

Hamilton tweaked a lingering left hamstring injury in his final at-bat Wednesday night. The speedy center fielder expects to be good to go in a couple of days. Chris Heisey is playing center and leading off Thursday.

Yadier Molina will undergo an MRI on his sprained right thumb to determine the severity of the injury.

Molina will undergo the tests Wednesday night, with the results coming back sometime Thursday. Once the extent of the injury is known, it will shed some more light on how much time the All-Star catcher might miss. Tony Cruz will start in Molina's place on Thursday and perhaps through the weekend. Molina suffered the sprain Wednesday on an awkward slide into third base.

Mark Teixeira went 2-for-6, homering twice, as the Yankees won in extra innings against the Indians on Wednesday.

Teixeira hit a solo shot off of Josh Tomlin in the fourth inning, and then hit a two-run shot off of Tomlin in the fifth. The first baseman now has 17 on the season along with 47 RBI and a .241/.338/.470 slash line.

Jacoby Ellsbury broke a 4-4 tie in the 14th inning, blasting a solo home run to right field in Wednesday's win over the Indians.

Ellsbury went 3-for-7 with a double on the evening overall. The home run brought his slugging percentage back over .400, as he's now slashing .282/.347/.403 with six home runs, 41 RBI, and 25 stolen bases.

Carlos Rodon and the White Sox have agreed upon a deal for more than $6.45 million, pending a physical, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The third overall selection in the 2014 MLB Draft, Rodon got more than the $5.7 million slot amount. WRAL-TV's Jeff Graley, who first broke the news of the agreement, expects Rodon to be assigned to High-A Winston-Salem. He should be a fast-moving prospect who could be in Chicago at some point in 2015.
Jul 9 - 11:23 PM

Roberto Hernandez needed only 84 pitches to hold the Brewers to one run over eight innings in Wednesday's victory.

Hernandez very easily could have taken the hill for the ninth inning, but manager Ryne Sandberg opted to let closer Jonathan Papelbon pick up the save. Hernandez limited the Brewers to three hits and two walks while striking out three in his most dominant start of the season. Now with a 4.22 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, and a 70/51 K/BB ratio, Hernandez will face the Braves in Atlanta when the Phillies return from the All-Star break.

Doug Fister improved his record to 8-2 after limiting the Orioles to two runs over seven innings on Wednesday.

Fister put together his fourth consecutive quality start, holding the Orioles to seven hits -- including Manny Machado's solo home run -- and two walks while striking out three. Fister has turned out to be exactly what the Nationals hoped for when they traded for him, as he now carries a 2.90 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and a 45/8 K/BB ratio. When the Nationals return from the All-Star break, Fister will take the hill against the Brewers at home.
Jul 9 - 10:23 PM

In his first start since May 10, Dillon Gee held the Braves to one run over seven innings en route to his fourth win on Wednesday.

Gee had been out for nearly two months with a strained lat. His effort helped the Mets extend their winning streak to four games and they'll go for a series sweep against the Braves on Thursday. The right-hander held the Braves to six hits and a walk while striking out four. Gee, now 4-1, has a 2.56 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and a 37/16 K/BB ratio. He'll take the hill after the All-Star break, taking on the Padres in San Diego.
Jul 9 - 9:37 PM

Carlos Ruiz (concussion) has been cleared to resume baseball activities after his second positive IMPACT test in three days.

Ruiz hasn't played since he was hit in the helmet by a pitch on June 26. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro had previously said Ruiz will start baseball activities this weekend if Wednesday's test went well. If things continue to progress, the catcher will likely be ready to go shortly after the All-Star break.
