CBS Sports' Jon Heyman was told by one person around the Yankees that Alex Rodriguez is making "fantastic" progress from hip surgery.

Rodriguez faced live pitching Tuesday for the first time since his surgery and supposedly put on "a power display." The Yankees have been reluctant to disclose a timetable publicly, but one source speculated to Heyman that A-Rod could begin a minor league rehab assignment right after the All-Star break. Either way, it appears that he is currently on track to beat Derek Jeter (ankle) back to the majors.

The Braves have named Julio Teheran their Opening Day starter.

He'll get the ball on April 6 in Miami. It's an obvious call after Teheran posted a 2.89 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 186/51 K/BB ratio across 221 innings last season. Wins could be hard to come by with the Braves in rebuilding mode, but the 24-year-old figures to again be an asset in three categories.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Friday that it "could be unlikely" Domonic Brown (Achilles) is ready for Opening Day.

Sandberg said the outfielder is coming along "slowly" in his recovery from left Achilles tendinitis, an ailment he was diagnosed with a week ago. Brown had been hoping to return to game action around the middle of next week, but it's sounding like that won't happen. The Phillies figure to go with Darin Ruf or maybe Jeff Francoeur in right field on Opening Day.
Mar 27 - 3:25 PM

Justin Verlander has been diagnosed with a right triceps cramp.

Verlander had to exit Friday's game with the ailment. Obviously any injury to a pitcher's arm is far from ideal, but the Tigers are convinced it's no big deal and expect the right-hander to be ready for his final spring training start next week. Verlander will be re-evaluated on Saturday.
Mar 27 - 2:22 PM

Josh Reddick (oblique) is not expected to be ready for Opening Day.

Reddick has progressed in the right direction since tweaking his oblique three weeks ago, but he just doesn't have enough time to prepare for the opener. The outfielder is expected to return to game action over the weekend and isn't expected to miss more than a handful of regular season contests. Ben Zobrist will handle right field until Reddick is ready, with Eric Sogard filling in at second base. Tyler Ladendorf and Billy Burns now have a shot to crack the Opening Day roster.
Mar 27 - 2:13 PM

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Friday that Tyler Clippard will serve as the team's interim closer while Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is sidelined.

The announcement certainly comes as no surprise. Doolittle (shoulder) is slated to play catch on Friday, but he's still expected to miss around the first month of the season. Clippard will handle the ninth inning until Doolittle is ready, making him mixed-league worthy in fantasy leagues.
Mar 27 - 2:07 PM

Chris Sale (foot) is on pace to make his season debut on April 12 against the Twins.

That's the final game of the White Sox' first series at home. Sale threw a simulated game on Friday with no issues and could appear in a minor league game early next week. It's been four weeks since the left-hander suffered an avulsion fracture in his right foot and he's progressed without any setbacks.

Indians optioned RHP Danny Salazar to Triple-A Columbus.

It was speculated after Salazar was rocked during Thursday's appearance that he might be sent down, and sure enough that's what happened. T.J. House and Zach McAllister are now the favorites to hold down the last two spots in the Indians' rotation, with Josh Tomlin also in the mix. Salazar still figures to spend ample time in the rotation this season if he can get straightened out at Triple-A, but obviously this is a big blow to his fantasy value.
Mar 27 - 12:36 PM

Jon Niese admitted Thursday to battling fatigue in his left shoulder this spring.

He tweaked his delivery during an intrasquad game Thursday and said the shoulder "actually felt a lot better. I wasn’t fatigued at the end." Niese has dealt with shoulder problems each of the last two seasons and it seems clear at this point that he's probably never going to pitch at 100 percent again. There's been no indication that the shoulder will affect his readiness for Opening Day, but the ailment certainly lowers Niese's ceiling and makes him susceptible to stints on the disabled list.
Mar 27 - 11:08 AM

The Yankees have named Masahiro Tanaka their Opening Day starter.

Tanaka's elbow has held up thus far in camp, so it's a no-brainer to send him out there on April 6 versus the Blue Jays. The Yanks also announced that Tanaka would be followed in the rotation by Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia and Nathan Eovaldi. Adam Warren is the favorite to capture the final spot in the rotation. Tanaka's upside his sky-high, but he remains a big health risk in 2015.

Taijuan Walker is next scheduled to start on Monday, while Roenis Elias is not currently penciled in for any more Cactus League starts.

As Bob Dutton of the Tacoma New Tribune notes, it's a pretty clear indication that Walker will be the Mariners' No. 5 starter even if the team hasn't announced it yet. While Elias holds a 6.75 ERA and 8/7 K/BB ratio over 14 2/3 innings this spring, Walker is unscored upon over 18 frames while boasting a 19/4 K/BB ratio. The 22-year-old looks to have won the job going away and is a potential breakout performer from the back-end of an impressive Mariners rotation.
Mar 27 - 10:29 AM

Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes that Jace Peterson "is in line to play second base" for the Braves.

Alberto Callaspo has played better recently, but Peterson has looked better all spring and appears poised to wrestle the second base job away from the veteran. The news potentially has notable consequence in fantasy leagues, as Peterson stole 148 bases in 389 games in the minors and has hit over .300 there over the last two seasons. He's a deep league middle infield target.
