Red Sox manager John Farrell said Andrew Bailey is no longer the team's closer.

Bailey gets the boot after allowing a walk-off home run to Jhonny Peralta on Thursday, which was his second straight blown save and third in his last five tries. He's allowed seven runs over his last five appearances. Junichi Tazawa is likely to get the first crack at the job, but Koji Uehara could be in the mix, as well.

Ryan Zimmerman went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a three-run home run, but the Nationals were beaten by the Cardinals on Monday.

Zimmerman gave the Nationals a 1-0 lead in the first inning iwth an RBI double, then made it 5-3 in the seventh with a three-run home run off of Kevin Siegrist. The first baseman has been on a tear since August 23, batting .345 (10-for-29) with four home runs and 15 RBI. It's an improvement on an otherwise bland .231/.298/.428 triple-slash line with 13 home runs and 63 RBI.

Mark Trumbo went yard twice on Monday, but the Mariners still lost to the Astros.

Trumbo tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run to the second deck in right field in the second inning. He then made a modest attempt to overcome a seven-run deficit in the ninth inning, clubbing a two-run shot to left-center. Trumbo closes out the month of August having hit seven home runs and knocking in 14 runs. Overall, he's hitting .248/.300/.410 with 10 home runs and 28 RBI since joining the Mariners in early June.

Carlos Correa returned to the Astros' lineup and went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Monday's win against the Mariners.

Correa pushed the Astros' lead to 5-1 with a fifth-inning two-run blast off of Vidal Nuno. The shortstop hadn't played since Tuesday due to a hamstring issue. The rookie has had a terrific season since debuting in June, batting .281/.349/.521 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI, 38 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases.

David Ortiz hit his 495th career home run, helping the Red Sox eke out a win over the Yankees on Monday.

Ortiz broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning, hitting an opposite-field blast over the Green Monster. He also doubled and walked in his four plate appearances. The DH has homered in back-to-back games, giving him 29 on the season with 80 RBI and a .267/.356/.525 triple-slash line.

Miguel Gonzalez will undergo an MRI on his right shoulder and right elbow on Tuesday.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter noted prior to Monday's game that Gonzalez had some soreness in "a couple places," and now we know more specifics. He already had a cortisone shot in his shoulder and will have both body parts examined to see if he's dealing with an structural damage. Gonzalez likely would have already been placed on the disabled list if roster expansion wasn't a day away. He figures to miss at least one start.

Chris Archer kept the Orioles off the board over six innings, earning his 12th win on Monday.

In the first inning, Archer got an assist from center fielder Kevin Kiermaier as he robbed Manny Machado of what would have been a solo home run. The right-hander scattered four hits and three walks with six strikeouts on the evening. Archer heads into the final month with a 2.78 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, and a 223/46 K/BB ratio over 181 innings. He'll face the Yankees in the Bronx next.

Shelby Miller remained winless since May 17, firing seven innings of one-run ball in a loss to the Marlins on Monday.

As usual, the Braves didn't offer him any run support. Miller's lone mistake occurred in the second inning, when Cole Gillespie hammered a solo home run out to left field. It was one of six hits he allowed with no walks and four strikeouts. Despite an awful 5-12 record, Miller has had a great season, sporting a 2.56 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP and a 147/58 K/BB ratio over 172 innings. He'll try not to have his winless streak extended to 20 starts when he faces the Nationals in a road match-up next.

Edwin Encarnacion extended his hitting streak to 26 games, finishing 2-for-4 in Monday's loss to the Indians.

Encarnacion singled to lead off the sixth inning, extending his hitting streak to 26 games. During his hitting streak, the 1B/DH is batting .412 (40-for-97). He added a double in the eighth inning, but was stranded. Encarnacion carries an impressive .274/.362/.548 triple-slash line with 30 home runs and 91 RBI on the year.

Danny Salazar limited the Blue Jays to two runs while racking up 10 strikeouts in seven innings in Monday's win.

Both runs came around in the fifth inning on Josh Donaldson's two-run triple. Salazar held the Blue Jays to six hits and a walk along with the 10 strikeouts. The right-hander has pitched magnificently in the second half, boasting a 2.39 ERA over his last eight starts. On the season, Salazar has a 3.27 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP and a 172/42 K/BB ratio over 151 1/3 innings. He'll match up with the Tigers in a road start next.

Royals acquired OF Jonny Gomes and cash considerations from the Braves in exchange for SS Luis Valenzuela.

Gomes has batted just .221/.325/.364 on the season but entered play Monday with a .271/.375/.458 batting line in the second half. He should serve mainly as a pinch-hitting option versus left-handers down the stretch.

Bartolo Colon picked up the win on Monday with eight scoreless innings versus the Phillies.

Colon improved on his seven scoreless innings against the Phillies on Wednesday. On Monday, he limited the opposition to only four hits and a walk while striking out nine in his strongest performance of the season. He'll bring a 4.42 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, and a 125/21 K/BB ratio over 161 innings into a start in Miami against the Marlins.
