Jeanmar Gomez (forearm) will be activated from the disabled list to start Wednesday against the Mariners.

Gomez threw five hitless innings at Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday and won't need another rehab appearance before being activated from the disabled list. He has a 3.07 ERA over 12 appearances (seven starts) and will replace Brandon Cumpton in the Pirates' starting rotation.

Steve Cishek worked out of a ninth inning jam to earn his third save of the season, securing the Marlins' 3-2 win over the Mariners on Sunday.

Cishek started the inning by allowing a leadoff double to Corey Hart, and a groundout left a runner at third with one out. After a walk to Justin Smoak, the right-hander buckled down, striking out Nick Franklin and pinch-hitter Michael Saunders to end the game. Cishek is 3-for-3 in save opportunities and still hasn't allowed a run over six innings to start the year.

Twins claimed OF Sam Fuld off waivers from the Athletics.

It's a good fit, as the Twins could really use some outfield help. With Aaron Hicks sporting an ugly .179/.299/.214 batting line, Fuld could wind up with a good amount of playing time in center field. He's only a career .233/.312/.334 hitter over parts of seven big league seasons but offers a good outfield glove.

Clayton Kershaw (back) said following a 50-pitch simulated game Sunday that he assumes a rehab start is his next step.

Kershaw went three innings Sunday and was throwing at full intensity, with Dodgers manager Don Mattingly saying the hurler was hitting 90 mph. The club has yet to officially announce when the left-hander will begin a rehab assignment, but it certainly sounds like later this week is a reasonable expectation. He'll need at least a couple outings, with a mid-May return to the Dodgers' rotation being the goal.
Apr 20 - 1:40 PM

The Braves tentatively plan to have Mike Minor (shoulder) rejoin the rotation on Saturday against the Reds.

He'd be going on two extra days' rest with Thursday's off day. Minor allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts in his final rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday. He got his pitch count up to 80 in the outing, so Minor should be able to get up to around 100 against the Reds.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said in an interview Sunday that Matt Harrison's (back) next start is expected to come at the major league level.

It's a reverse of what the team said last week, but Harrison convinced the Rangers that he was ready with eight shutout innings in a rehab start with Double-A Frisco Saturday. Harrison can slide into the rotation spot that was vacated by Tanner Scheppers (elbow). The left-hander will be making his first start in the majors since last April.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said in an interview Sunday that Adrian Beltre (quad) is on track to return for next weekend's series in Seattle.

The veteran third baseman will wind up spending only the minimum amount of time on the disabled list. Kevin Kouzmanoff has done so well while filling in for Beltre that he might stick around in a bench role.
Apr 20 - 11:11 AM

Alex Cobb (oblique) said Sunday that he's feeling better and is targeting late May or early June for a return.

It would be on the long end of the previously projected 4-6 week timetable, but that's no surprise since the Rays are notoriously cautious with injuries. It's not clear when Cobb will be cleared to throw again, but it probably won't happen before the end of the month.
Apr 20 - 11:08 AM

Yankees activated 1B Mark Teixeira from the 15-day disabled list.

Teixeira wound up missing the minimum amount of time with a hamstring strain. He returns to a .250/.308/.250 batting line and is at first base and hitting fifth in Sunday's game against the Rays.
Apr 20 - 10:45 AM

Tigers released SS Alex Gonzalez.

Well, that didn't last long. Desperate for a replacement for Jose Iglesias, the Tigers traded Steve Lombardozzi for Gonzalez in a late-spring deal. The veteran infielder wound up lasting just three weeks, as he hit just .167/.219/.233 while showing diminished range in the field. The Tigers will go with Andrew Romine and Danny Worth at shortstop.
Apr 20 - 10:32 AM

Yankees placed RHP Ivan Nova on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Nova hasn't decided whether he'll rest and rehab or undergo Tommy John surgery, but the latter is probably an inevitability. It's a tough blow for the Yankees' rotation, as Nova showed glimpses of a potential breakout last season. The Yankees will likely use Vidal Nuno as his rotation replacement for now.
Apr 20 - 10:17 AM

Mets manager Terry Collins said Sunday that Kyle Farnsworth has supplanted Jose Valverde as the team's new closer.

Farnsworth has pitched well for the Mets in the early going, allowing just one run over his first 7 1/3 relief innings. However, his velocity has been declining for a few years now and he hasn't had an effective full season since 2011. It's a move that's unlikely to work out, but the Mets don't have any great options.
