Yankees signed OF Corey Patterson to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Patterson, 33, was released by the Mariners earlier this month after batting just .175/.224/.270 over 19 games at the Triple-A level. He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2011 and will continue to provide organizational depth.

R.A. Dickey allowed two runs on four hits over eight innings, and the Braves edged the Nationals 3-2 on Thursday.

Ryan Zimmerman jumped on a high knuckler in the second inning for a solo homer, but Dickey pretty effectively perplexed the Nats over the rest of his tenure. To that end, he struck out four without issuing a walk in his eight innings. Those starts have been rare in recent weeks, as he carried a 10.05 September ERA into Thursday's outing. The 42-year-old is 10-10 with a 4.32 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 30 starts overall, and he'll square off with the Mets on Tuesday.

Gabriel Ynoa allowed a run on five hits over eight innings to lead the Orioles to a 3-1 win over the Rays on Thursday.

In a game they desperately needed to keep their playoff hopes alive, Ynoa delivered a gem for the O's, allowing only a third inning RBI single and nothing more. He walked two and struck out three, relying on 13 ground balls to cut through the Rays on just 94 pitches through his eight innings. Ynoa is now 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.29 WHIP through eight appearances, including three starts. The 24-year-old will surely be entrusted with another, regardless of the Orioles' playoff chances at the time, and that start is likely to come Wednesday against the Pirates in a rare late-season interleague matchup.

Jason Vargas hurled 6 1/3 scoreless innings as the Royals shut out the Blue Jays 1-0 on Thursday.

Vargas gave up a pair of singles and walked three but didn't allow any damage, the first time in the season's second half that he's exited a start without allowing a run. That was good for his 17th win of the year, and his third in a row. The southpaw is 17-10 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 30 starts this year. He'll try keep rolling Tuesday against the struggling Tigers.

Jacob deGrom's next start has been pushed back to Sunday due to flu-like symptoms.

The right-hander has dealt with nausea and an upset stomach for the last few days, so the Mets will adjust their schedule a bit to give deGrom ample time for recovery. Robert Gsellman will now start Friday's series opener against the Nationals and Matt Harvey will go Saturday.
Sep 21 - 3:33 PM

Ender Inciarte (thumb) is back in the Braves' starting lineup Thursday night against the Nationals.

Inciarte exited Tuesday's game with lingering soreness in his left thumb and he remained sidelined on Wednesday, but the rangy 26-year-old will start in center field and hit leadoff Thursday versus Nats right-hander Tanner Roark. Inciarte has a .304 batting average with 11 home runs and 22 stolen bases in 146 games this season.

X-rays turned up negative on Justin Turner's right thumb.

Turner got struck on the thumb by a pitch in the first inning of Thursday's game against the Phillies and he was lifted in the bottom of the second. The official diagnosis is a right thumb contusion. Consider the third baseman day-to-day.
Sep 21 - 2:34 PM

Jose Ramirez is absent from the Indians' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon.

Ramirez recently missed a couple of games with a minor hamstring injury and the American League Central champs want him as healthy as possible for the postseason, so he figures to get a few more days of rest down the stretch. Erik Gonzalez is starting at second base and batting ninth Thursday versus Angels right-hander Parker Bridwell.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Orioles have "no intention" of shopping Manny Machado.

But it also seems highly doubtful that the O's will be able to lock up the 25-year-old third baseman to a contract extension with free agency looming after the 2018 season. Heyman hears club ownership was "within $8 million or $9 million" of making it happen a few years back. Machado has been on fire in the second half of 2017 and is up to 32 home runs and 92 RBI through 147 total games this year. He's also played his usual brand of excellent defense.
Sep 21 - 12:20 PM

Corey Seager (ankle, elbow) is out of the Dodgers' lineup on Thursday afternoon.

Seager has been bothered by right elbow discomfort for over a month and he fouled a ball off his ankle on Wednesday night. He'll probably get multiple days off over this final stretch of the regular season so that he is as healthy as possible leading into the playoffs. Logan Forsythe is starting at shortstop and batting eighth Thursday versus the Phillies.
Sep 21 - 11:01 AM

Adam Frazier went 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run and four RBI in a 6-4 walk-off win over the Brewers on Wednesday.

He smacked a two-run triple that tied the game in the third inning and was subsequently driven in by Starling Marte's single. In the bottom of the ninth he came to the plate against Brewers closer Corey Knebel with a runner aboard and drilled a game-ending bomb to right field. The big game boosted his line to .282/.353/.409 with six homers, 53 RBI and 50 runs in 113 games. He's chipped in nine stolen bases to boot. The super-utility player has filled in all over the field for injured or suspended players and has acquitted himself quite well at the plate. The 25-year-old hit .301 as a rookie last year and might merit a regular starting gig next year.
Sep 21 - 2:12 AM

Aaron Altherr went 3-for-4 with a clutch home run and game-winning base hit as his team beat the Dodgers 7-5 on Wednesday.

He drilled a game-tying, two-run homer off reliever Ross Stripling in the seventh inning, then drove in the winning runs with a single in the bottom of the eighth. The outfielder has missed a couple months' worth of games with hamstring issues this year but has been very good when able to play. He has a .281/.351/.539 triple slash with 19 home runs and 60 RBI in 97 games.
