Pirates optioned RHP Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cumpton posted a 3.60 ERA in two spot starts, but is no longer needed with Jeanmar Gomez returning from the DL. The Pirates have called up Tony Sanchez to replace him on the active roster.

Zach Britton won't pitch in Wednesday's intrasquad game due to symptoms of a potential oblique injury.

This type of injury can sideline players for several weeks, so it's understandable that the Orioles don't want to take any chances with their dominant closer. We should know more on his status in the next day or two.

Alex Rodriguez said Tuesday at Yankees camp that he's retired and has no intention of continuing his playing career.

It's only natural that the topic was raised with A-Rod serving as a guest instructor in Yankees camp. Heck, even manager Joe Girardi raised the possibility of a return Tuesday afternoon. However, A-Rod's spokesman Ron Berkowitz said back in January that the 41-year-old wasn't planning to make a comeback and nothing has changed since. A lightning rod for attention and controversy, Rodriguez will finish fourth all-time with 696 home runs. He won three MVP Awards and posted a .295/.380/.550 batting line to go along with 3,115 career hits.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker indicated Tuesday that the club is likely to trade Derek Norris after reaching an agreement with free agent catcher Matt Wieters.

Baker said "there's always someone looking for a front line catcher." The Nationals apparently didn't feel secure enough with Norris as their primary backstop, but the feeling is that he'll end up playing elsewhere in 2017 rather than serve as Wieters' backup. The 28-year-old batted just .186/.255/.328 last season, but he's capable of better and he's owed just $4.2 million in 2017. He could draw some interest in the days ahead.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Johnny Cueto hopes to arrive in camp by the weekend.

Cueto has been taking care of his father, who is battling an illness in the Dominican Republic. His father is expected to accompany him to the United States, so they are working on a visa issue. Cueto has thrown bullpen sessions and batting practice in preparation for the spring, but it's unclear whether he'll be able to pitch in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Matt Wieters' deal with the Nationals is worth $21 million over two years.

As previously reported, the deal includes an opt-out after the first year. Wieters would make $10.5 million in both years of the deal if he chooses to stick around. It's not quite the deal he was originally hoping for this winter, but he wound up in a good spot and is at least putting himself in a position to cash in with a resurgent 2017.

Orioles re-signed OF Michael Bourn to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that Bourn will receive $2 million if in the majors, and ESPN's Jerry Crasnick adds that the deal includes a March 25 opt-out. The 34-year-old hasn't had an effective full season in a while, but he played well in his brief time with the Orioles last year with a .283/.358/.435 with two home runs, eight RBI and two steals in 24 games. Bourn will compete for a reserve outfielder role.

Dodgers signed OF Franklin Gutierrez to a one-year, $2.6 million contract.

The deal was reported over a week ago and has finally become official. Gutierrez, who can make an additional $400,000 through incentives, has batted .265/.339/.520 with 29 home runs over the last two seasons in a platoon role. He cranked 20 of those 29 dingers over just 329 plate appearances versus lefties and should continue to be a weapon against southpaws when healthy.

An MRI on Josh Donaldson's right calf revealed only a mild strain.

Donaldson tweaked his calf while running sprints last Friday, but the Blue Jays think they've dodged a bullet here. "It's not a significant [strain]," general manager Ross Atkins said Monday. "So we're optimistic that he'll be back on his feet and moving pretty quickly." Barring a setback, the star third baseman should be fine come Opening Day.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, "the feeling from the Mets side is the Neil Walker contract extension discussions are probably dead."

Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reported on Sunday that the two sides were making progress on a contract extension that would potentially run through 2019, but it sounds like there wound up being a big gap in the financial expectations. Walker will make $17.2 million in 2017 after accepting the Mets' one-year qualifying offer in early November. He is scheduled to become a free agent next winter.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told Fantasy Sports Radio on Monday that Shawn Kelley, Blake Treinen, and Koda Glover are competing to be the team's closer.

Rizzo also said that he's had no recent trade talks for relief help, so the job will probably go to one of these three. Kelley figures to be the front-runner here in February after registering a strong 2.64 ERA, 0.897 WHIP, and 80/11 K/BB ratio in 58 innings last season for Washington. It's a story we'll be tracking all spring.

Jeurys Familia returned to Mets camp Monday.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reported Saturday that Familia's weekend absence from the Mets' spring training facilities had something to do with MLB's ongoing investigation into the closer's October domestic violence charge. So maybe we'll be hearing about a suspension soon from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred. Addison Reed projects to open the 2017 season as New York's ninth-inning man, unless Familia somehow avoids punishment.
