Nelson Figueroa has signed with the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

Figueroa failed to make the Diamondbacks out of spring training and was given his outright release in May. The 39-year-old right-hander will look to continue his career at the International level. He posted a 4.55 ERA over parts of nine seasons in the major leagues.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw a successful simulated game Thursday morning at Comerica Park.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters afterward that the 49-pitch workout went well. Tanaka continues to make steady progress in his attempt to rehab a torn ulnar collateral ligament and could rejoin the Yankees' starting rotation next month if everything continues to go smoothly. It's not often that a pitcher who is diagnosed with a torn UCL is able to avoid Tommy John surgery, but it's also not unprecedented.

Anthony Rizzo (back) is out again Thursday.

Rizzo also sat out Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's series-opener against the Reds with lower back tightness. He's still considered day-to-day. Chris Valaika will start at first base in Thursday's series finale.

Buster Posey hit a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth inning to send the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Rockies on Wednesday.

It was his second career walk-off homer. The catcher finished 3-for-5 with three RBI. Posey hit his 16th and 17th home runs on Tuesday, and his 18th tonight -- he's one of many pro batters that practices gratitude for the existence of Rockies' pitchers. During his seven-game hitting streak, Posey is 15-for-31 (.484) with five homers and 10 RBI.

Clayton Kershaw surrendered only an unearned run across eight innings, striking out 10, in Wednesday's 3-1 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Kershaw scattered six hits and walked two. The left-hander has now worked seven innings or more in 14 straight starts. He's given up more than three earned runs just once all season, remarkable consistency that is summed up in a gorgeous 1.73 ERA. Kershaw (16-3) welcomes the Nationals to Southern California next time around.

Rusney Castillo has obtained a work visa and is eligible to play in games.

There was some question as to whether he would have the visa prior to the minor league seasons coming to a close, but the Red Sox will now be able to sneak him into a few games before the end of August if so desired. The 27-year-old Cuban outfielder is expected to make his major league debut sometime in September. He inked a record seven-year, $72.5 million contract last week.

Scott Van Slyke exited Wednesday's game with a mild right ankle sprain.

The injury looked bad, but the Dodgers made sure to say it is a mild sprain. He's being considered day-to-day.
Aug 27 - 11:19 PM

Grady Sizemore belted a pinch-hit, go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning of Wednesday's win against the Nationals.

Thanks to Sizemore, the Phillies polished off a series sweep of the NL East-leading Nationals. Sizemore's blast put the Phillies up 5-4, a lead they never relented. It's only his second home run as a Phillie, and he has knocked in nine runs with a .307/.342/.474 slash line in 120 plate appearances. Sizemore's playing time is a day-to-day decision for manager Ryne Sandberg, who will juggle at least five outfielders for three spots through the remainder of the season.
Aug 27 - 11:06 PM

David Price was chased from Wednesday's start with no outs in the third inning, allowing eight runs, in a loss to the Yankees.

It was a nightmare for Price in the third inning, as he allowed nine consecutive hits to the Yankees in an eight-run frame. Overall, Price yielded 12 hits and a walk while punching out three. Though he was booed by the home crowd, Price has otherwise pitched well for the Tigers since joining the team at the trade deadline, but Wednesday's outing bumps his Tigers ERA up to 4.41. Price will try to bounce back on Monday in Cleveland against the Indians.
Aug 27 - 10:50 PM

Yadier Molina caught six innings and went 2-for-3 with a double in his first rehab start with Double-A Springfield on Wednesday.

Molina has made incredible progress from the torn ligament in his right thumb, and despite Wednesday being his first game action the Cardinals are optimistic about his ability to return to the big club shortly. Molina could be back in St. Louis by Friday at the earliest.
Aug 27 - 10:47 PM

Jorge Soler homered in his first major league plate appearance and added an RBI single later, finishing 2-for-4 overall, as the Cubs were defeated by the Reds on Wednesday.

Soler took Mat Latos out to center field for a no-doubt home run, starting off his big league career in fashion. The Cubs have been ushering in the youth movement and Soler is the latest part of that. The 22-year-old should get regular playing time in right field through the end of the season.
Aug 27 - 10:33 PM

Julio Teheran earned his 13th win of the season after holding the Mets to one run in 6 1/3 innings of work on Wednesday.

Neither side had much going for them offensively, though Teheran was helped by a pair of spectacular Andrelton Simmons defensive plays, including one to finish the bottom of the eighth inning which saved a run. Teheran allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. He owns a 2.90 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 116/52 K/BB ratio. Teheran will look for his 14th win on Monday at home against the Phillies.
