Blue Jays activated SS Jose Reyes from the 60-day disabled list.

Now fully recovered from a severely sprained ankle, Reyes hit the cover off the ball during his rehab assignment, batting .414 (12-for-29) with one double, two RBI, and two stolen bases in seven games between High-A Dunedin and Triple-A Buffalo. The speedy shortstop should provide a big boost at the top of the lineup for the Blue Jays, who are very much alive in the American League East.

Kyle Gibson spun eight scoreless innings in a 2-0 win over the Royals on Thursday.

Gibson had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth inning, but struck out Lorenzo Cain swinging and got Eric Hosmer to ground out to wiggle out of the jam. It was the exclamation point on a terrific outing for the young right-hander, who allowed a total of four hits and four walks while striking out seven. He has fanned 54 batters in 64 1/3 innings over his last 10 starts, which is really encouraging. He'll bring a 3.04 ERA into a start against the Orioles next week.

Dodgers designated RHP Brandon League for assignment.

As he's still owed $7.5 million this season, it's extremely unlikely that any other squad will pick up the veteran hurler off of waivers. He should continue to provide organizational bullpen depth for the Dodgers.
Jul 2 - 11:12 PM

Adam Lind broke a 7-7 tie with an RBI single in the 11th inning on Thursday, propelling the Brewers to an 8-7 victory over the Phillies.

Lind finished the night 2-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI. Prior to his 11th inning heroics, he delivered an RBI single as part of a three-run uprising in the first inning against Phillies starter Chad Billingsley. Lind is enjoying a terrific season in the middle of the Brewers lineup, slashing .295/.365/.502 with 12 homers and 46 RBI.

Yovani Gallardo extended his scoreless innings streak to 29 1/3 with another six shutout frames against the Orioles in a no-decision on Thursday.

The right-hander was once again superb, scattering just two hits and three walks on the evening while striking out two. He now boasts a tremendous 2.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 72/31 K/BB ratio over 102 innings on the season. He'll look to extend his dominance further when he does battle against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Jul 2 - 10:28 PM

Max Scherzer gave up two runs over 8 1/3 innings in a complete-game loss against the Braves on Thursday.

The game was tied 1-1 until Scherzer gave up a walk-off single to Cameron Maybin in the bottom of the ninth. While he took the loss, it was still a heck of an outing. Scherzer allowed a total of five hits and no walks while striking out nine batters. He now has a 42/1 K/BB ratio over his last four starts and has gone the distance in three of them. Quite a run for someone who had one complete game over his first 210 starts in the majors.

Jacoby Ellsbury (knee) will not rejoin the Yankees on Friday as had been anticipated.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday that Ellsbury is still trying to get his legs in baseball shape. It seems likely that he'll continue on his minor league rehab assignment with High-A Tampa through the weekend before rejoining the Bombers next week.
Jul 2 - 9:28 PM

Manny Banuelos was forced to leave his major league debut in the sixth inning on Thursday with an apparent injury.

Banuelos was visited by the trainer and pulled after consecutive hit batsmen in the sixth inning. He had been absolutely dealing prior to that point, hurling 5 2/3 shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out seven. The Braves should have an update on his status soon.

According to Robert Patrick and Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have fired scouting director Chris Correa after an "imposed leave of absence."

The Cardinals declined to comment on the situation, but a source with knowledge of the investigation into the hacking of the Astros' network said that Correa admitted to accessing the database in order to verify that the team had stolen proprietary data. Many assumed that some lower-level employees were involved in the alleged hacking, but this story obviously goes much deeper. Correa, who originally started working with the Cardinals in 2009, was promoted to director of amateur scouting over the winter and recently oversaw his first draft.
Jul 2 - 4:44 PM

Miguel Sano will serve as the designated hitter and bat sixth in his MLB debut Thursday against the Royals.

Sano was called up Thursday after batting .274/.374/.544 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI over 66 games this season with Double-A Chattanooga. The 22-year-old offers massive power potential from the right side of the plate. He's expected to serve as the primary DH now that Kennys Vargas has been demoted, so he's well worth a flier in most fantasy formats.
Jul 2 - 4:41 PM

Cardinals placed OF Jon Jay on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 1, with a left wrist stress reaction/bone bruise.

Jay has been dealing with the wrist injury all season and hopes that a couple of weeks of rest will prove beneficial. He'll be eligible to return after the All-Star break.
Jul 2 - 4:30 PM

Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports that the Dodgers have signed right-hander Trevor Cahill.

No official word yet from the Dodgers, but it's presumably a minor league deal. Cahill had an ugly 7.52 ERA in three starts and 12 relief appearances with the Braves this season and will function as organizational depth.
