Cardinals activated RHP Fernando Salas from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Memphis.

Salas is recovered from his right shoulder injury, but the Cardinals want him to get in more work against Triple-A competition. The 28-year-old right-hander has a 3.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 12/3 K/BB ratio in 16 1/3 innings of relief this season out of the St. Louis bullpen.

Leonys Martin (hamstring) only expects to miss a couple of games.

Martin was lifted from Wednesday's defeat of the Athletics after tweaking his left hamstring while running the bases in the bottom of the third inning. "They decided to take me out of the game to be smart," the hot-hitting center fielder said late Wednesday. "But I hope to be back in a few days. We've got a day off tomorrow and we'll see. This is the first time I've had this happen, but it'll be all right."

Adam Lind went 4-for-4 with two homers and six RBI to help propel the Mariners past the A's 13-3 on Wednesday.

Between his steady track record and the Mariners' fine start, Lind hasn't lost playing time to Dae Ho Lee at first base. He really should consider himself lucky, given that he entered the night with a .216/.246/.319 line. Of course, even if Lee does seem capable, Lind was always the better bet as a starter against righties. He should be solid from here on out.

David Freese went 1-for-3 with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth inning in Wednesday's 5-4 comeback win over the Diamondbacks.

Freese clobbered a hanging two-strike slider from Rubby De La Rosa in the fifth inning, ending the pitcher's night and giving the Pirates a lead they wouldn't relinquish. He has lost some playing time with the return of Jung Ho Kang; however, the 33-year-old is an ideal bench player for a contending club. He's now hitting .277/.365/.394 with 23 runs scored and 14 runs batted in.

Carlos Gomez (ribs) hit a solo home run in a rehab game Wednesday night with Double-A Corpus Christi.

It was his first home run at any level of baseball since the calendar turned to 2016. Gomez ultimately finished the night 1-for-4 and is now 1-for-8 through two rehab games. The center fielder was batting just .182 with a .486 OPS in 34 games for Houston when he landed on the disabled list May 16 with a bruised left rib cage. He'll be back in the majors next week.
May 25 - 10:51 PM

Dustin Pedroia (hamstring) said that he will play against the Rockies on Thursday.

"Unless I'm benched," Pedroia said of his status for Thursday. He felt a cramp on a groundout in the early innings of Wednesday's stomping of the Rockies and the Red Sox training staff told him to take it easy. When he jogged into second on a fifth-inning double, he was subsequently lifted for pinch-runner Marco Hernandez. We will see if Pedroia can make good on his boast in Thursday's series finale versus Colorado.

Jonny Gomes told WEEI's Rob Bradford that he is not retiring.

Bradford tweeted that he "just talked to Jonny Gomes," so this about as certain as you're going to get outside of Gomes himself calling a press conference. Earlier in the day, MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo had reported that the well-traveled veteran outfielder had decided to retire. Gomes played for the Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan up until May 11, when he left "by mutual consent." He hit just .169/.280/.246 over 75 plate appearances in Nippon Professional Baseball.

Mark Teixeira is scheduled to receive a cortisone shot for his renewed neck discomfort.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said the club is not considering placing Teixeira on the disabled list yet, but he's going to have to miss at least a couple more games while the cortisone takes effect. The veteran first baseman underwent an MRI on Wednesday afternoon, which apparently showed no major structural damage. He has been bothered by neck spasms for much of May.
May 25 - 10:29 PM

Russell Martin finally busted out of his power slump and hit a pair of homers in Wednesday's win over the Yankees.

Martin had one extra-base hit, a double, in 136 plate appearances prior to Wednesday, but he took Ivan Nova deep for a solo shot in the sixth and followed up with a two-run homer off Chasen Shreve in the seventh. It's important to note that his neck has hindered his playing time and his overall performance in 2016. Although his neck stiffness won't magically disappear, Wednesday's big performance hopefully will kick off a positive run of play from Martin, who is now only hitting .181/.248/.236 on the season.

On the possibility of optioning the struggling Shelby Miller to Triple-A Reno, Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart said Wednesday, "We want to get him on track the best way we can."

"We will figure it out and do what's needed," Stewart followed. This is all incredibly vague, but there is no denying Miller's issues. The 25-year-old right-hander was rocked for six runs over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates and holds a 7.09 ERA, 1.86 WHIP, and 30/29 K/BB ratio across 45 2/3 innings in 2016. His next scheduled start would come against the Padres this weekend, assuming he is still on the major league roster at that time.
May 25 - 8:41 PM

Alex Rodriguez (hamstring) went 1-for-2 with a homer on Wednesday night at Double-A Trenton.

Rodriguez hit into a groundout in his first at-bat, but he swatted a two-run shot to dead center in his second trip to the plate to put Trenton up 6-0. A-Rod is due back in the Yankees' starting lineup Thursday after missing the last three weeks with a hamstring strain. He went 3-for-6 with three RBI on his two-game rehab assignment with the Trenton Thunder.

X-rays taken on Brandon Belt's sprained left ankle came back negative.

Belt suffered the ankle injury on a slide into second base during Wednesday afternoon's win over the Padres. Giants manager Bruce Bochy described the injury as mild and the negative X-rays back that assertion. Belt said that he thinks he might be able to play against the Rockies (at Coors Field) on Friday.
