Justin Masterson tossed his third shutout of the season in Sunday's 4-0 win over the White Sox.

It was a refreshing bounceback effort from the big right-hander, who gave up six runs in a loss last week against the Orioles. He was locked in on Saturday in Chicago, yielding just six hits and one walk while fanning eight. Masterson will carry a 10-6 record, 3.48 ERA and 1.18 WHIP into his next outing at the Royals' Kauffman Stadium.

Jon Jay (wrist, forearm) remains out of the Padres' lineup Saturday against the Reds.

Jay hasn't played since he was hit in the wrist area with a pitch last Sunday and a stint on the disabled list remains a possibility. Travis Jankowski will start in center field again and bat leadoff Saturday.

Marc Carig of Newsday reports that the Mets are expected to officially sign Jose Reyes on Saturday afternoon.

Multiple reporters are saying the same, as a reunion is basically seen as a foregone conclusion at this point. Reyes won't officially become a free agent until 1 p.m. ET, but Mets manager Terry Collins was already talking Friday about how the team plans to use him. The Mets would only be responsible for paying the veteran infielder a prorated portion of the major league minimum. Reyes was designated for assignment by the Rockies last week after completing a suspension for a domestic violence incident with his wife.

Yankees designated 1B Ike Davis for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Mark Teixeira's return from the disabled list. Davis went 3-for-14 (.214) with an RBI during his brief stint with the Yankees. He told reporters that he'll consider staying with the organization if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Astros purchased the contract of 1B A.J. Reed from Triple-A Fresno.

The move is now official. Reed is expected to make his major league debut as the designated hitter Saturday against the Royals. The 23-year-old didn't exactly put up monster numbers in Triple-A this year (.266/.345/.509 with 11 home runs through 59 games), but he was riding an eight-game hitting streak and hit three homers along the way. The Astros could sit him against left-handers initially, but his power and patience makes him worth adding in most fantasy formats.

Yankees activated 1B Mark Teixeira from the 15-day disabled list.

The corresponding roster move isn't yet known. Teixeira has been sidelined since June 3 with a cartilage tear in his right knee, but he'll make his return Saturday and bat sixth against Twins right-hander Ervin Santana. The veteran slugger went 1-for-9 during a brief minor league rehab assignment and will return to a disappointing .180/.271/.263 batting line. Rob Refsynder played well during his absence, but he's headed back to the bench for now.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny declined to commit to Trevor Rosenthal as his closer after he gave up a walk-off three-run homer in Friday's loss to the Mariners.

Rosenthal didn't retire any of the three batters he faced Friday and gave up a walk-off homer to Adam Lind. It was his third rough appearance in his last five and he now owns a 5.63 ERA and 2.03 WHIP for the year. Matheny has stood behind his closer until now, but he's clearly at the end of his rope. "Yeah, I don't know," said Matheny when asked how the team moves forward with Rosenthal in the ninth inning. "I don't know the answer right now." Kevin Siegrist and Seung-Hwan Oh are both worth stashing in fantasy leagues.

Brewers signed first-round pick OF Corey Ray.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports hears that the deal is worth $4.125 million, so it comes in slightly under the $4.382 million slot value attached to the No. 5 overall pick. Ray is a dynamic offensive performer and could make to the majors in relatively short order, so he makes for an exciting name to follow in fantasy leagues. The only question is whether he'll be able to stick in center field.
Jun 25 - 9:07 AM

George Springer blasted a grand slam as part of a three hit day, leading the Astros to a 13-4 victory over the Royals on Friday.

Springer led off the game with a triple and followed it up with the grand slam the same inning. He finished the game 3-for-5 with a walk, five RBI and two runs scored. Springer has been a near-elite fantasy force with 16 home runs, 51 runs scored, 46 RBI, six steals and a .266 batting average.

Mookie Betts hit a game-tying, two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning to help the Red Sox rally to an 8-7 victory over the Rangers on Friday.

Trailing by two and down to their last out, Betts smacked a Matt Bush pitch over the center-field wall to tie the game. Later in the inning Dustin Pedroia scored on a wild pitch for the go-ahead run. Betts finished 2-for-5 on the night. He's batting .292 with 16 homers and 12 steals and leads the majors with 65 runs scored.

Melvin Upton crushed two home runs to lead the Padres to a 13-4 whipping of the Reds on Friday.

He finished the day 3-for-5 with four RBI and scored two runs. He now has 11 home runs on the season. Upton was one of the worst hitters in the league his two years in Atlanta but has been pretty good since moving to San Diego last year. His owners could benefit from a 20 homer, 30 steal season from Upton if he continues his current pace. He has stolen 16 bases this year and has stolen 40 or more three times in his career -- most recently in 2010 however.
Jun 25 - 12:01 AM

Wil Myers went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI on Friday night versus the Reds.

The home run was his 17th. He has a .289 batting average to go with 49 runs, 50 RBI and 10 stolen bases. After three injury-plagued seasons, the 25-year-old Myers is finally turning into the fantasy stud we all expected when he was a prospect. He may surpass his career high of 335 at-bats before the All Star break.
